Rwanda vs Palestine

Have I understood correctly that the UK government is spending more on not sending refugees to Rwanda than on helping displaced people in Palestine?

Inappropriate thread title, it makes it look like a football match.

The costs of legal fees tend to add up particularly when you get Supreme Court level. The govt are facing legal challenges from many sides re: illegal asylum seekers - Rwanda, barges, hotels, disused military facilities, individual appeals....

Not only do all these challenges divert funds away from other issues, it also takes working time away from the finite number of civil servants who could be dealing with some of the backlogs.

I don't really have much of an opinion about the Rwanda debacle but I do have an opinion about the situation in Gaza and that an immediate ceasefire needs to be called. And that the govts around the world should unite in calling for one, then immediately seek a long term solution.

I was cheered yesterday by the Foreign Office statement to the Commons yesterday that stated the Govt position as seeking the Two State solution and the media narrative (finally) casting a light on the Israeli illegal settlements being forced (by violence) in the West Bank.

As far as Rwanda being an unsafe place for illegal migrants to the UK due to various Human Rights issues being raised by the UN and ECHR, I'm pretty sure these organizations have had issues with the UK in recent years. I'd also suggest that we stop all those UK/Rwandan School Exchange trips that having been going on for over a decade, can't be sending dc to somewhere so unsafe. For indeed, Rwanda has been in receipt of some very well spent UK Development Funds over the years - Boris didn't just blindly stick a pin on a map.

The Rwandan facilities don't look too bad to me - if the UK Govt paid for me and DS to go on holiday there we'd go. And I would leave a truthful and honest view on Trip Advisor.

Dotjones · 15/11/2023 13:31

Well the Rwanda plan is to solve a pressing issue that is on our doorstep. Palestine is nothing to do with us, it's bloody miles away and contrary to popular belief it's not "our fault" there's a big fight going on there. We were forced to take control after WWI due to the collapse of the Ottoman empire. The US, Jews and Arabs didn't agree with the way we were running the region (the Jews and Arabs both killing our people) so we passed control to the UN with the requirement to find a solution that satisfied all sides. They didn't, and it's a mess now.

I'm so sick of this false equivalence bullshit - once is nothing to do with the other!

At least with Rwanda there's a clear trail of where the money is being spent. Foreign aid to Gaza invariably ends up being used for missiles or tunnels. Or sometimes just for the bank accounts of Hamas leaders.

Where is the money being spent in Rwanda?

How does sending perfectly legal asylum seekers to Rwanda solve that?

Well I said Illegal...
But you would have to ask someone in the government that question

I don't believe that anyone in government thinks for one minute that it will actually solve any kind of problem.

For the avoidance of doubt all asylum seekers are legal at the point they seek asylum.

I am pretty sure the only problem those in the government are interested in solving is how they remain in power for as long as possible. Unfortunately rather a lot of the UK population have cottoned on to how little they have done for the country in the last 13 years and so would like the opportunity to vote them out.

Illegal immigration

Nope! They reckon only about 100 of the present asylum seekers would meet the criteria. The numbers per year would be peanuts. And it won’t deter anyone. It’s a gimmick.

Stomacharmeleon · 15/11/2023 21:36

People may disagree on here but jo public particularly voting Jo public think that small boats and immigration is an issue. And they would like something done about it.
Both sides of the political spectrum know it needs to be sorted. We know the Tory route.... I have to honest I am unsure what labours is.
We need open dialogue about immigration and how to move forward. Processing in Calais etc?

Perfect28 · 15/11/2023 21:43

@Stomacharmeleon where is the evidence that this is a big issue for people? Then prove that it was a big issue for people before the conservatives and the daily mail started making it a big issue.

Less than 1/3 of those surveyed by yougov in a September survey placed immigration in the top 3 most important issues facing the UK.

Palestine is nothing to do with us,

It has actually......

Balfour declaration by the British government in 1917 in support of a “national home for the Jewish people” in Palestine and the ensuing conflicts with Arab communities there.

Stomacharmeleon · 15/11/2023 22:24

I didn't say that I did. I wish they would process people in Calais's so they didn't need to get in a boat in the first place.

I think people do care though particularly the voters for the conservative party. I do think that by making this all about the daily mail you are discrediting their legitimate concerns. It will effect how they vote hence the pledges.

Not everything is an attack. I am just saying.....
