Bizkwit · 14/11/2023 20:58

How long did it take you to get there and what line of work are you in?

How long did it take you to get to £50k and then from £50k-£75k

PosteriorPosterity · 15/11/2023 08:49

0-50k: 22 to 28 (6 years)
50k-75k: 28 to 32 (2 years)
75k-110k: 32 to 33 (1 year).

Accountant in large and then Big 4 accountancy firms.

whatthehelldowecare · 15/11/2023 08:49

I'm a solicitor, currently on £52500 and have been since May (I'm 30). Just applied for a new job which if I get (big if), will take me to £73k. If I stay where I am, likely take me about 5 years I think

TheaBrandt · 15/11/2023 08:54

Solicitor but flipped around the profession so my salary been like a yo yo! £8k / £16k / £32k / £64k / £94k / £8k / £20k / £50k/ £94k 😀

mimp · 15/11/2023 08:55

That’s very interesting as that is where my son is trying to head he’s in his first role since graduation

Grumpsy · 15/11/2023 08:58

But do you enjoy your jobs? That's always been the main criteria for me. Hence earning significantly less 😂

short stint of 90k @ 34, wasn’t worth my time or sanity so he moved back to a role paying a lower amount (circa 78k) and I’m much happier.

Starseeking · 15/11/2023 10:53

Now in my early 40's, once my annual bonus is taken into account, I will be on 3 x what I was earning at 30.

The ironic thing is I have never been motivated by money, and feel like I have the best job ever as every day is really quite varied and it's all about commercial problem solving, which I love doing.

Z1hun · 15/11/2023 11:26

I work in (middle market corporate) insurance and without bonuses I hit 50k-75k this year. I did it by changing jobs every 2 or 3 years in my 20s. I'm now 31.

WildestDreams3 · 15/11/2023 11:32

50k at age 28, 56k at 29
68k +3k bonus at 31, I'm 32 and still on this.

I'm in contracts negotiation for pharmaceutical companies

Elsiebear90 · 15/11/2023 11:46

46k age 32, went up to 78k contracting for NHS. Don’t want to reveal my actual job title and it’s very niche, so might be identifying, but I do long term contracts with NHS, clinical work, but not a doctor or nurse.

FrasierReboot · 15/11/2023 11:54

I earn just over that and work in sales.

I'm in my forties and have always done sales jobs, but equally I work with some young people in their early twenties who are new to sales and they are earning very similar amounts to me

flipperdoda · 15/11/2023 12:17

First job (grad scheme then standard employee - v good benefits):
22 37k
23 39k
25 48k
26 49k

Next job (shit benefits, startup):
27 68k
28 75k

Now 29 and starting a new job on 78k plus good benefits incl 10% bonus in January

So 4 years to 50k or close enough, then 2 years to 75k from there

Software developer

Genuinely really enjoy my job and feel very lucky!

Mushroo · 15/11/2023 12:27

For those asking if I enjoy my job, I’ve never had a job I would say I’ve ‘enjoyed’ - I don’t really like working, whether that be minimum wage in a supermarket, a tour guide, running events or my current desk job.
My current desk job pays well, is stress free and I only work 9-5, so I enjoy it in that sense!

Essentially, I hate working, so I took the view I may as well be well paid in return.

MyDucksArentInARow · 15/11/2023 13:00

I'm 28 and work in tech

22 (graduated) 31k (outside London, 40k if I'd taken london job)
23 changed companies 37k
24 promo 43k
26 promo 53k
27 promo and job change 65k
27 2nd promo 76k
28 promo 86k

Since changing companies I also receive about 15-20% cash bonus and 20-25% stock bonus, so total comp is around 120k at the moment.

Pooooochi · 15/11/2023 14:06

I put that i enjoy my job and i sort of do, for... a job.

I think i would qualify my answer that i work to live. I'd always rather be not working, but of all the ways to earn a crust, i relatively enjoy the one i have.

EpiPerson · 15/11/2023 15:25

Started university at 18, undergrad, masters, phd.
First salary over 50k was at 28
Hit 75k at 31
I’m an epidemiologist, private sector

Cabdiraxman · 15/11/2023 15:58

14 years old £1000 a week selling phones on ebay from 2000-2002. Worked in Wilkos minimum wage weekend 18 year old. Age 21 was a planning officer. At same time used savings to try and run a business. Didn't work out. Tried again in 2011 ran a music studio..was ok,but not good enough. Eventually succeeded in manufacturing replacement parts for military equipment overseas and make lots. Reinvest money back into company, but only pay myself 5000 a month after tax. 37 years old now.

Bizkwit · 15/11/2023 17:47

Those in finance what do you do in finance? We’re in the same field, so I’m Wondering if I need to pivot my focus elsewhere from my current field?

What's obvious is now some jobs are paid far too much -

Including mine

Compared to other way more deserving professions

Badgerandfox227 · 18/11/2023 08:06

I’m in insurance

andrew10642 · 21/03/2024 22:18

I am a software developer and got my first developer job aged 25, in 2005, having worked in low paid stuff before that, and whilst studying at Uni.

Salary didn't change much at first but then demand for devs increased massively and I managed to switch jobs a few times in my late 30s and early 40s, going from 47000, to 55000, then 65000 and finally 73500.

So for me a combination of hard work studying and learning on the job, some strategic moves. But also some dumb luck that the thing I like and am reasonably good at suddenly became in hot demand.

With AI though, the future looks less certain.

The job is worth what someone will pay for it, I wouldn't feel bad about it. If times get tough they'll get rid of us like a shot. It's a business transaction.

JustMarriedBecca · 21/03/2024 22:23

Graduated on 70k at age 24 (City Law). Now would be closer to £130k

Pay drop to move out of London but now circa £100k+ (age 35+)

Wow, when I started the money was crap haha. £20k for my first junior dev job in 2005.

KERALA1 · 21/03/2024 22:24

Salary quite erratic

Johnnyfartpants · 21/03/2024 22:32

25-27 mid Noughties - trainee solicitor in the city can’t remember exact salary; qualified in 2007 on £68k age 27. I suppose equivalent to £100k now? Change of career and recession led me to being back at that level (ish) around 6/7 years later?
