How long did it take you to get there and what line of work are you in?

How long did it take you to get to £50k and then from £50k-£75k

I think the moral of these tales is don’t work in the public sector 😳😳😩😄

Mine is from the public sector. £50k by 29 and £75 by 32

laclochette · 14/11/2023 23:33

Work in comms/media:

25-32: £16k-£50k (moved into a different part of the industry, then got promoted)
32-35: £55k-£75k (changed jobs, resigned due to another offer then got a counter promotion / raise from my existing job, which I accepted)
35-37: £95k-£110k (changed jobs, then changed again with a £20k raise the first time and £15k raise the second time)

In my industry, moving is the way to ratchet up your salary.

WYorkshireRose · 14/11/2023 23:42

30-33 - £28k-£50k
33-35 - £50k-75k*

*Due to one job/company move, followed by a fairly swift (and unexpected) promotion.

keffie12 · 14/11/2023 23:44

Not me! My eldest son is on £75k a year, including the year-end bonus, they get annually.

He is a team leader and a front end software tech engineer.

It's taken him from leaving uni about 8 years to get there. It will take him about another 4-5 years to get to the top end of £120 k

eurochick · 15/11/2023 05:43

Lawyer

23 - 14-30k equivalent as a temp paralegal
25 - grant of approx. 10k during on the job training (had to move back home as couldn't live in London on that)
26 - first qualified job 60k, increasing by 5-10k per year
30 - moved job 105k, hated it
31 - moved job again 90k, increasing by a bit each year
38 - made partner 150k
43 - moved job 200k+, hated it
46 - left to become self-employed, earnings all over the place!

There were various bonuses along the way too, from a couple of grand to about 60k.

CheekyHobson · 15/11/2023 05:50

21 $35k
28 $80k
34 $100
Had kids and worked part time earning $40-80k p/a freelance depending on how much I was working
45 returned FT $120k
Now a bit higher, doing Masters part-time to enable consultancy and aiming to be on $180k+ by age 50

Comms, broadly, but with a valuable specialization

Muthaofcats · 15/11/2023 05:52

24k=12k
25=30k
26=35k
27y=41.5k
30y = 35k
31= 40k
32=75k
33=80k
35=90k
37=95k
39=100k

LindorDoubleChoc · 15/11/2023 05:56

Ascubudr · 15/11/2023 06:04

Hospital Doctor with managment responsibilities
Age 25-£ 25K
26-28 £ 29-45K
29-32 Babies and pt work ( 0.5-0.6) - £30-32K ish
32- 39 Higher training ( mostly ft or 0.7) £60-75K ish
39-45 Consultant contract ft £77-99K
45-now current job £150 K, but have just signed new contract so hoping from Jan will be £165K

So £50K by 27ish, £75K by late 30's would have been more like 34 if didn't have time out for babies.

Night409 · 15/11/2023 07:16

These salaries are making me feel ashamed!

I don’t think I’d even hit £40k in the next 20 years in the career I’m in (working with SEND children & young adults).

I’m wondering whether I should have a change in careers. I’m 33.

I’m not sure what I’d do though, as these jobs on here seem way too advanced for me.

nomoresnacks · 15/11/2023 07:24

Lawyer - in the north so outgoings v much not as high as London

I'm on £75k at 37

Manage a team but I work 9-5 and I'm strict about this because I have young DC

I could earn more but I love the work life balance and enjoy my job

meagert · 15/11/2023 07:28

0-£50k 12 years after graduation
50-75k 18 months

Compliance in the public sector, basically one grade jump but to a better paying organisation. I will sit around this amount for a while now unless I move into the private sector.

Starseeking · 15/11/2023 07:28

Finance

I was 50 when I reached that figure. I had been in my industry for 25 years at that point

crackfoxy · 15/11/2023 08:07

Current salary £75-80k as variable depending on projects, looking to drop some hours soon so will drop again

46 - £80k
30-45 between £45-65k
25-30 - £35k

Slow burner but always worked for NHS and worked my way up the 'ladder' in clinical / management

nutbrownhare15 · 14/11/2023 22:19

But do you enjoy your jobs? That's always been the main criteria for me. Hence earning significantly less 😂

Yes, generally!

I’m never bored, which is crucial for me. Every day is different, and my job (law) requires a lot of strategic planning, research and writing, all of which I enjoy doing. It challenges me intellectually and it’s a very social profession.

It can be very stressful at times and there are never enough hours in the day. I find it hard to stop thinking about work when the day is done. But I can’t think of anything else that I imagine would be as varied and interesting.

RufustheFactualReindeer · 15/11/2023 08:19

21 year old dd earned that in letttings in london

its mainly commission so she might not get that again plus she works an average of 60 hours a week and is knackered (she has a chronic health issue) so i am not sure she will be in that job very long

Pooooochi · 15/11/2023 08:29

But do you enjoy your jobs? That's always been the main criteria for me. Hence earning significantly less 😂

Yes! My team are really fun & i don't work long hours.

There are times when i have to get my head around really complex questions, at speed and it can be mentally exhausting and feel quite stressful in the moment. But then you feel quite fulfilled when you solve something/work it out. I can also quite often be put on the spot and asked to comment on big things involving £millions at no notice, and have to make quick, considered decisions. It suits me because i respond well to pressure/deadlines but it does often leave me very tired.

TheCadoganArms · 15/11/2023 08:34

But do you enjoy your jobs? That's always been the main criteria for me. Hence earning significantly less 😂

I have reached I guess what you call 'mid management'. I do not want to go higher then that as the work life balance gets compromised significantly. I can pretty much switch off once I stop work and enjoy my down time without having to check my phone, answer emails or 'be on call'. Although I am busy during work hours I am not stressed and I earn enough that I have savings, can make mortgage overpayments and generally afford to do fun stuff. I have colleagues on way more money then me but to be honest they never look happy or relaxed.

BurnoutGP · 15/11/2023 08:39

GP didn't earn 50k till I'd been qualified 5 years so age 28ish.
Slow increase to age 32 but not to 75k
Back to 50k when I became a GP Partner
Hit 75k after about 5years so age 38 ish
Quick jump to 100k ish next few years.
And there I have sat now age 53. Despite working harder and more hours my partnership income has remained static for 10 years so a significant cut in real terms. Hence the now drastic shortage of GPs.
What did it take? A fuckload of hard work since age 13. Long hours night shifts for years. Lots of extra training. And a huge student loan.
I wouldn't recommend it. Neither of my DC have any interest in doing medicine.

ntmdino · 15/11/2023 08:41

21-36: 16k -> 50k
35 - 44: 50k -> 95k
46: 85k

I work in tech (developer), but it's fairly niche and I tend to avoid high-stress jobs - that's the reason for the recent pay cut, I'm just not interested in leading teams, and the money doesn't really matter to me that much any more. I'm also autistic, which significantly limits the kinds of environments I want to be a part of.

Ultimately, at my point in life, quality of life matters more to me than anything else, and everything over 55k is a bonus.

idontlikealdi · 15/11/2023 08:46

I have a niche role in an engineering firm. Am now on 75+car allowance and full package.

I'm 41, it's taken five years too long to get to this level due to mar leave, part time and needing the flexibility of my former role when kids were young.

milkydress · 15/11/2023 08:47

Age 53
Undergrad and 2 Postgrad degrees all relating to my field
20 years in NHS and I am on £51k / work 4 days now as 5 days nearly finished me off due to the sheer stress of it.
