If people were given the choice to pay a small monthly subscription to royal family to do appearances, promote charities and live or rent out a few properties, would they do it?

We already pay for them through taxes which is essentially a subscription. If you mean if it was an optional tax then no I wouldn't pay it.

If all taxes were optional though I wouldn’t pay into the NHS, social care or public transport. There’s a reason they government decide what’s best and we have a social responsibility to pay in.

Another pointless moaning thread about the royals, who I have no problem with

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 14/11/2023 17:15

Would I get a magazine each month with a freebie? Princess Anne doing an Agony Aunt section? A teddy of prince Edward saying congratulations for adopting a prince today? One of those building sets so I get a piece of Buckingham palace each week and within a year I have enough pieces to build my own?

No.

TintinHadToBeMale · 14/11/2023 17:17

No. Should have done it as a vote op!

I wouldn’t anyway, but the trouble our government is failing to face is that they have impoverished a huge slice of the population relative to our boomer parents, and the country is dividing between rich and struggler. There’s no middle. We do not have it spare any more, and that is a huge problem for the whole economy.

We already do. It's called taxes. And I begrudge every penny of the sovereign grant.

Only someone dim and cruel would have a problem with a person because of their situation of birth. We're all human apparently.

It's not the people I have a problem with. It's he entire proposition of a "Monarch" who God has appointed my better. You can fuck right off with that distinctly foreign idea.

iklboo · 14/11/2023 18:04

Under no circumstances

Sorry, I'm not following?

IIRC through taxes they cost the country £1 per person per year.

I think they offer pretty good value for that. They bring in a lot of tourism revenue and I think the Queen did a pretty good job as HOS, which is a job normally done by some past it politician.

I think I would rather keep them than end up with someone like Tony Blair as president. When you look at some of them they actually do a fair amount of engagements per year.

Sure it is mostly just turning up and shaking hands. But it must be boring AF and I'm pretty sure there are quite a few similar people around paid to do non jobs that are far easier than that.

wesurecouldstandgladioli · 14/11/2023 19:03

Is this a reference to the £1.30 they cost each tax payer? Too bloody much.

Apparently it's about 77p if we don't count maintaining their humble abodes. They don't have the qualifications, skills or experience that I have. They barely work a few hours a week...I work in public service for 37 every week. I'm willing to accept 75p per person per year. And I don't expect anyone to fix my roof.

Ps. Should have added that the French Royal family still bring in lots of tourists cash. Despite being dead. Versailles is lovely...

Andrews got a few hundred Teddy bears spare. You could have one of those!

WaWaWaWaaaaaa · 14/11/2023 19:24

I don't understand how the Royal family aren't embarrassed about their wealth and status. They must really believe that they are superior to everyone else.

I think Andrew and Harry are completely products of their upbringing, not ourliers. They have just been found out. I don't think any of them give a shit about any of us.

Comtesse · 14/11/2023 19:45

Hahahahaha what a foolish suggestion.

Jerabilis · 14/11/2023 19:49

The Sovereign grant costs each person less than £1 a year. I’m definitely happy to pay a £1 a year to make sure our politicians are knocked down a step. additionally the cost of a head of state (assuming it wouldn’t be the prime minister) plus the associated election costs would be considerably more than £1 p.a.

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 14/11/2023 20:31

@Angrycat2768 And I can imagine what he may do with those! No thanks 😂

What about their security? They won't tell us how much extra that is.
