I have a huge fear of sickness and I've just eaten apple slices that are two days past their 'use by' date 😭😭😭 please tell me this won't cause food poisoning? I'm so angry at myself, I always check the label but this time my partner just handed them to me and I ate them. So scared

If they looked and tasted fine then you’ll almost certainly be fine.

They had a slight off taste which led me to checking the date 😭

Apples will be fine. They won’t make you ill. Take some nice calming breaths and either do an online meditation or read a book. You are fine and won’t be ill

HateMyRubbishBoss · 12/11/2023 23:31

ah don’t worry it’s fine, worse comes to worst your bowels will clear up 😎

LightSpeeds · 12/11/2023 23:31

I've also suffered from this terrible fear of being sick, so sympathies there.

To date, I've never been ill from anything I've accidentally eaten that's been out of date or open too long.

(Or that someone else gave me - but let's not go there 🙄😂)

AnneLovesGilbert · 12/11/2023 23:31

The apple doesn’t know it was meant to go off on a particular date.

Anything bought presliced always tastes different to something whole.

You’ll be fine.

Throckmorton · 12/11/2023 23:31

you'll be fine - I've very definitely eaten worse and been fine. Try to distract yourself.

MonsteraMama · 12/11/2023 23:32

I ate some sardines from 2009 a few months ago while cleaning out my grandads house. I'm still here.

You'll be fine.

DieDeutschLehrerin · 12/11/2023 23:32

Please don't worry, you will be fine. Apple doesn't have a use by, it's just best before and that just means when it's freshest. It won't give you food poisoning. I always panic at the thought of my kids getting sick and I would have let them eat apple past its best before. Try and think about something else now.

Mademetoxic · 12/11/2023 23:33

I eat yoghurts which are 6/7 weeks past their 'use by' date!
(Forget they're in the fridge)

I live to tell the tale.

It's no big deal.

Lovemychair · 12/11/2023 23:33

I think the 'best by' dates give a bit of leeway, you'll be fine.

NoSquirrels · 12/11/2023 23:35

Nothing bad will happen to you from slightly past their best apples. Honestly.

WandaWonder · 12/11/2023 23:38

Fruit does not have a use by date

TheresaCrowd · 12/11/2023 23:38

They'll be grand.

I grew up with an apple tree in the garden and none of them grew with use by dates on Confused

What do you think people with fruit bowls do?

They don't grab a Sharpie and write the dates on the fruit 😁

Pottedpalm · 12/11/2023 23:42

I have never heard of a slightly ‘old’ apple causing sickness.
However, might I suggest buying whole apples and cutting them
up yourself?

LightSpeeds · 12/11/2023 23:47

TheresaCrowd: I think she probably means the refrigerated packaged apple slices with a Use By date on.

Yes that's what I mean 😭 I know I sound so stupid to people without emetophobia but this gives me huge fear. I'm crying currently out of worry. Wish I was normal

PestilencialCrisis · 13/11/2023 01:04

You will be fine. Breathe deeply and get some rest. There is acid in your stomach strong enough to eat through a table - it will have already eaten through the chewed up apple pulp before you even typed your post.

Fionaville · 13/11/2023 01:32

I have your fear. You'll be absolutely fine with apples. If anything they'd just taste sour.

HoppingPavlova · 13/11/2023 02:45

It’s apple, not shellfish. You will be fine. Don’t give it another thought.

I suggest you stop buying pre chopped fresh fruit and veg which are to be eaten raw if you have a fear of vomiting...

TheHawkisHowling · 13/11/2023 04:57

Bless you, OP. It must be a horrible feeling worrying so much.

I'm positive you'll be fine. I can't see any way it would make you sick. It probably tasted funny because it just wasn't a very nice apple.

CatchHimDerry · 13/11/2023 05:24

I have the same fear OP, sympathies. It can be debilitating on times.

I actually dread winter and I'm always on alert for sick kids near my toddler etc. It’s so hard.

But I’m not weird about food, only chicken which is related to a different story.
Apples you’ll be absolutely fine!

Do you think you’d benefit from any kind of therapy or counselling? I have been considering it for myself and wonder if it might help

TookTheBook · 13/11/2023 05:38

Learn the difference between "use by" and "best before" and take it from there.

Of course an apple a few days past its best before date will be fine! It's meat, fish, dairy you need to be wary of.
