I have a huge fear of sickness and I've just eaten apple slices that are two days past their 'use by' date 😭😭😭 please tell me this won't cause food poisoning? I'm so angry at myself, I always check the label but this time my partner just handed them to me and I ate them. So scared

Learn the difference between "use by" and "best before" and take it from there.

Of course an apple a few days past its best before date will be fine! It's meat, fish, dairy you need to be wary of.

Pre cut has use by, not best before. For a reason

I'm also emetophobic so I understand how you must be feeling, but honestly you'll be fine ♥️ I have in the past accidentally eaten cream that was 3 months out of date and a raw soufflé (that I didn't realize was meant to be cooked 😂) with zero side effects whatsoever. You're okay. Truly Flowers

A slighly soft apple will not make you sick. Apples last for months, those British apples you are buying now will have been picked in the early autumn.

The reason apple slices have a use by date is cut apples oxidise and go soft and brown very quickly. Pre cut fruit is so wasteful.

Have you had therapy for this? I get you have emetophobia but crying with fear after eating a very slighly out of date slice of apple is not normal and must really impact your quality of life.

I once drank a tin of tomato juice that was 14 years out of date and I was fine.

SpicedLodged · 13/11/2023 08:01

I've never taken notice of use by dates, with anything. I just go by how food looks/smells/quick taste test.

Never been poorly from bad food!

People are way too uptight about best by/use by dates.

TheresaCrowd: I think she probably means the refrigerated packaged apple slices with a Use By date on.

Yes I know that's what she means and my point is, just because it's been chopped and put in a packet, makes no difference.

It actually does

Why?! 😂

MaliciaKeys · 13/11/2023 14:59

You won't be sick after eating apple slices, but in future buy fresh whole apples instead of pre-packaged sliced ones.

Why?! 😂

It was in 1990 when I was sixteen and obsessed with the 1970s. I found the tin at the back of a cupboard and when I saw the best before was in 1976 I absolutely had to drink it just for that reason!
