I have put an electric oil filled heated in our kitchen family room. Trying to not put full heating on until the evenings, then we are switching it off at night.

How are you managing?

When the DC are at school, if I'm home alone I don't put the heating on until just before they get home. It then does an hour and off again. I keep warm ish my wearing my gilet and big jumper and cleaning a lot.
It's trickier when the DC are home though, we usually do an hour in the morning to keep it warmer then too.

Glorious sunshine here 11 degrees, we're out for a beach walk soon , always feels warmer inside when you've been out and active. I had surgery last week so going to take it easy but still need to get out or I'll go mad

Bendysnap · 11/11/2023 09:21

I wear thermal underwear and woollen jumper and woollen slippers. Grew up in a country without widespread central heating (and it’s still not widespread) and I don’t have a mindset to expect a warm house : in winter you wear more layers. Central heating / a warm house still feels like a massive indulgence

Zanatdy · 11/11/2023 09:22

Yes last year I didn’t put the heating on during the day. I was only at home 2 days as in office the other days. It was too expensive to have it on during the day. Live in a flat now and it’s so warm and cheap to run

Thanks all for your replies.
The sun is now out,and has heated the house. Your comments do make think how we are all conditioned into thinking we must.have.warm houses.

Imagine.of.all the benefits if this expectation reduced.

We have a south facing living area and the sun in streaming in right now and it's lovely and warm.

But if I am cold I am putting the heating on. I would economise on a lot of other things before cutting out the heating.

nutbrownhare15 · 11/11/2023 12:18

Layers and blankets. I'm trying to hold out on using the heating til next week, it's been ok so far. I've only put the heating on when my parents have been here.

Superscientist · 11/11/2023 12:20

I work at home 4 days a week and I'm doing the opposite to you and have the heating on in the morning to warm the house then it knock the temperature down over that course of the afternoon. It starts at 17 then goes to 16.5 and then 16. It goes back up to 17 when I pick my daughter up from nursery

Aparecium · 11/11/2023 12:23

We switched the heating on for the first time on Thursday. We're definitely put-on-jumper types. We're only having the heating on for a couple of hours in the late afternoon ATM. Two reasons: if I'm cold when I go to bed I really struggle to fall asleep, even with hotties, but also because we find that we get a lot of condensation if the house is at below 14C for long periods while it is occupied. Even though we're still sleeping with open windows. So it's both comfort and practicality.

UndertheCedartree · 11/11/2023 12:24

I can't really afford to put the heating on so we sit in the living room with blankets. I have a little electric fan heater we can use sometimes when it's really cold. I'll do as I did last year and only put the heating on maybe once or twice a week to help the laundry dry in the winter.

Sleeplessinseattle234 · 11/11/2023 12:24

I’m in the south and have not had to put mine on yet. Still saying 18 degrees in the house. I am in a bungalow so that helps. But nothing cold enough for the heating to go on.

BarelyCoping123 · 11/11/2023 12:28

Heat on first thing in the morning for an hour or so, then off; DH works from home so uses an electric space heater to keep one room (somewhat) warm; heat on in the evening for an hour or two.
I bought giant fleeces last year too

VisionsOfSplendour · 11/11/2023 12:32

I met up with some work colleagues yesterday, not people I normally work with so making general conversation and every one of them said they can't afford to have the heating on if they ate working from home

Ime it's totally normal nowadays with the coat of heating, why do you think it might be unreasonable?

Wotsitfappe · 11/11/2023 12:34

We aren't using the heating much yet. Either in the day or at night/evening. We're in a victorian terrace in Newcastle. I think it's quite normal if it's not freezing to try and go without! Especially with the cost at the moment.

Userwithallthenumbers · 11/11/2023 12:35

I have never had mine on all day and I work from home full-time, have done for about 8 years. It is only ever on for an hour in the morning and a couple of hours in the evening. I wear layers and have a oil filled heater for my study for really cold days, not used it yet this year.

I grew up in a single glazed older property and after years in draughty student flats and crap rentals, a house with double glazing and insulation always feels warm to me.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 11/11/2023 12:35

We have our heating set to come on for 30 mins in the morning if it drops below 17. Its come on the last few mornings, other than that we haven't really needed it. It's set to come on at 3.30pm again if it drops below 17 but it's hardly come on.

When I wfh, if I'm cold I put a big jumper on and I have usb gloves. My kids are the type to wear huge jumpers all year round as they like the comfort from them so they don't tend to mind wrapping up.

Doing this kept my gas and electric bill last year to £1900 in a 4 bed house and this year's prediction is around £1400.

I never use heating over night, just have thick duvets and wear layers if needs be.

muddyford · 11/11/2023 12:37

Ours is on for a couple of hours in the morning and four or five in the evening. Never ever on overnight.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 11/11/2023 12:37

I would say though, I refuse to be cold. So if I get uncomfortably cold I absolutely will put the heating on. Same if my kids say they're cold. I think the only time I needed it a lot last year was those few snowy days we had (I'm East anglia).

PickAChew · 11/11/2023 12:38

We like a warm house and have a ds with SN who needs thst but rarely have the heating on in daylight hours unless it's one of those dark damp days or especially cold.

idontlikealdi · 11/11/2023 12:40

Ours has only been on a couple of times, it's not cold enough here yet and I hate the dryness of heating. When it is cold it is on 6-8 in the morning and 4.30-11 in the evening. We never have it on overnight, too stuffy and I like to sleep with the window open.

If it's cold and we're at home at the weekends it'll go on as needed.

Gowlett · 11/11/2023 12:41

An hour in the morning, when getting ready.
An hour in the evening, before bedtime.

mrsbyers · 11/11/2023 12:44

Got our heating on constantly downstairs set to maintain 20 degrees , south facing large windows at front of house usually mean it’s warmer during the day than that and in the evening we have blankets we use. Heating is off upstairs completely

Reallybadidea · 11/11/2023 12:48

Electricity is much more expensive then gas per kWh so it might be cheaper to turn off radiators in rooms you're not using but use the boiler for heating in your kitchen/family room.

I found last winter utterly miserable trying to avoid using the heating unless I was desperate. Fortunately we're now on a tariff where the cost of gas is about half of last year's capped rate and we're very lucky that we can afford to use it to keep the house warm this year. Once the house is warmed through it doesn't actually cost that much more to maintain it at that level, although I do turn it off overnight because I hate being too warm in bed.

margotrose · 11/11/2023 12:48

It was 14 degrees in the house this morning - heating went on for a couple of hours to bring it up to 18, other than that it'll stay off unless it gets really cold again later.

It's currently 19 in here as the sun is making it warmer.

Pinkpinkpink15 · 11/11/2023 12:51

Overnight my hormones are heating the planet & the bedroom windows are wide open.

i can't stand being woken up by the noise of the radiators &/or being too hot, so no heating on in the mornings.

I need to replace my heating controls (the current Honeywell one has screen issues & I want something like TADO which I can do fancy things with from my phone. This of course I was going to do in the summer 🙄🙄)

at which point I'll put the bathroom heating on 24/7 at a yet undetermined heat. Loo seat needs to be NOT freezing bloody cold!! But the bathroom doesn't need to be warm.

then I'll play around with the other rooms & let TADO (or whatever) do its thing.

my fixed tarif ends next month, so my bills are going to shoot up anyway!!! Big increase in both standing rates & per unit rate 🙄
