I have put an electric oil filled heated in our kitchen family room. Trying to not put full heating on until the evenings, then we are switching it off at night.

How are you managing?

No one has ever had the heating on all day thigh have they?! Sometimes I feel like I’ve been living under a rock my whole life! In my circles it’s always been normal for 2 hours morning 2-4 hours evening.

No one? Try living in a poorly insulated flat in the north of Scotland.

I don my cloak of righteousness.
I need no artificial warmth.

😉😁😁😁

I’m in the south and have not had to put mine on yet. Still saying 18 degrees in the house. I am in a bungalow so that helps. But nothing cold enough for the heating to go on.

18 is what we set our thermostat to when we do have the heating on. Come in on a cold day, take coat and shoes off, and you're comfy. A pile of blankets live on the sofa if you're chilly in the evening. I go to friends' house and I know I will have to peel like an onion (layers!) because they keep their houses at 20 degrees or more, T-shirt temperatures, and I will shelter in what I consider normal indoors clothing.

KatBurglar · 11/11/2023 12:57

Double pairs of socks on cold days, and layers.

Even a pair of tights or pop socks under your jeans will make a massive difference to how much you feel the cold.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 11/11/2023 12:57

On for an hour in the morning to take the chill off. Then hour in the Eve.

Kids rooms have oil filled heaters that are on a timer and come on for half an hour every few hours to keep the chill away. We have a throw.

Daphnis156 · 11/11/2023 12:58

I moved house partly so I could be warmer, an can now afford a good amount of heating, if it is cold.

Well clearly it depends on a huge range of factors. If you're working out of the house and are away 8.30 - 6 or something, obviously you're not going to be heating an empty house. And equally obviously, if you live in Lerwick or Aviemore, the temperature is going to be colder than if you are in Dover or Penzance.

We have never heated the house overnight but there are times during the winter when we're both working from home and when the heating clicks off at 9am, it's not long before it's switched straight back on again.

Thanks all for your replies.
The sun is now out,and has heated the house. Your comments do make think how we are all conditioned into thinking we must.have.warm houses.

Imagine.of.all the benefits if this expectation reduced.

Edited

What benefits? I have kept my heating on low for the last two years. My house has more condensation/mould, I'm grumpy and I drag my blanket from room to room😆

Depends how sophisticated your system is. Ours is on 6am till 10pm, but set to a certain temperature, so it only kicks in when needed. We used to have it set to 20 during the day, 21 in the evening. (Oh and it’s still on during the night, but just set to 14 so rarely comes on.)
We’ve dropped the temp to 18 now, and so it usually comes on in the morning and rarely during the day. And then for a bit in the evening g.

A slightly older relative keeps her heating at 23 degrees all day throughout the year. I honestly don't know how she affords it. It's jarring in the winter to visit her house and need to sit in just my thermal under-layers because I'm sweating 😆

Wt12 · 11/11/2023 13:04

We live in a flat so luckily it doesn't get too cold however when it is chilly we just layer up i.e. thermals/wool socks/blankets. We use hot water bottles. When we have the heated air rack on for the clothes, it gets pretty warm as our living room is small so we get by without putting the heating on

forgotmyusername1 · 11/11/2023 13:11

Oodies and heated blankets during the day here if cold.

Central heating has not yet been on but it will be soon.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 11/11/2023 13:15

Layers, extra socks, woolly slippers. It's not normally too bad. To be fair, the room I work in gets a lot of sun.

We have the heating on for two hours morning and evening, and we keep the doors closed as much as we can to keep the heat in the rooms. We also have hot water bottles and an electric blanket. The hot water bottles are good for my frozen feet but I don't know if we'll need the electric blanket - we haven't so far.

DGPP · 11/11/2023 13:19

3 hours morning, 3 hours evening, electric blanket for wfh during the day

Calmdown14 · 11/11/2023 13:26

Is it actually more cost effective to run the oil heater? Especially if you are not on an electric heating tariff?

Gas is considerably cheaper than electric per kWh albeit you are heating more rooms at once.

Do you have a smart meter? Or if not do one day of electric and one with a couple of hours gas and calculate the usage on your meters.

SophieinParis · 11/11/2023 13:28

I have mine set constantly to 19.5, day and night! I hate feeling chilly inside (don’t mind at all outside) and the house gets damp and condensation appears if it’s too cold.

GoGoGo2 · 11/11/2023 13:28

In my house I think it's cheaper the let the kids have an oil filled heater each, than have the whole house central heating. Seems to be about a pound an hour for heating. Perhaps I should look at my tariffs....

We haven’t had our heating on at all yet. We live in a pretty warm house and are very warm blooded.

MichaelAndEagle · 11/11/2023 13:32

My parents house is too warm for me. In the winter I couldn't wear a jumper in their house, far too warm.
I think my house is too cold for them though, mum always brings her slippers with her!

Edit to say this was in response to the PP who knew someone who's house was always 23 degrees.

Ballsbaill · 11/11/2023 13:33

Watch it though. It can be false economy if by keeping heating to a bare minimum you end up with damp and mould.

Desecratedcoconut · 11/11/2023 13:34

I have the thermostat set to 20.5c throughout the day. It dropped to 17.7c overnight when the outdoor temp fell to 2c and it took 2.5hrs to heat the home this morning.

TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet · 11/11/2023 13:35

Heating on for 45 mins first thing in the morning and just before bed, so it’s warm whilst we’re getting changed etc. otherwise lots of layers and blankets!

Burgundylover · 11/11/2023 15:47

I feel the cold a lot. It's still not full winter temperatures so I am wearing vest, jumper and one or two cardigans. Once it's colder out, I will be in thermal vest, leggings with jeans on top, and thermal socks. I will wear long sleeved t-shirt, thick jumper and 2 cardigans but still be cold. I try to last from 9 to 3 when the heating is timed to be off by using heated throw or getting under the duvet, but if it is really cold I am too uncomfortable. I can't bear being really cold.
