Aurasauras · 10/11/2023 12:33

Currently on a no spend couple of days. Urges so far:-
morningcoffee/oj
cute dress on sale
semi necessary piece of uniform my child only has one of
idly browsing auction site- at least three things that have been on my”one day” list
lunch

It’s only 12.30 and resisted all those urges to spend!

Probably every day 😂

I don't think there's a single day I don't spend money! A cheeky Amazon order here, a Starbucks there, lunch at work - online ordering is my favourite thing 😬

I'm impressed you've resisted the urge! I might have to give it a go!

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 10/11/2023 12:40

5 days a week - don't even think about spending.

2 days a week - will pop into town / have a browse online

Xenia · 10/11/2023 12:41

It has never been one of my problems so very rarely do I like to spend money. Sometimes I buy things because we need them (based on what we can afford) but it is not like trying to stop eating some delicious foods (which is more my issue than spending money!)

TheWayTheLightFalls · 10/11/2023 12:44

This is me. I am actively trying not to, and sometimes will overpay my mortgage by the amount I haven't spent on nonsense. Keeps me motivated.

ManateeFair · 10/11/2023 12:44

Oh, I constantly have the urge to spend. I resist it as much as I can but I'm constantly tempted. It's not that I'm tempted by really expensive stuff - the opposite, if anything. (Certainly with clothes etc I'm more likely to be attracted by something I perceive as a bargain.) The things I most over-buy are books and toiletries.

GarlicGrace · 10/11/2023 12:46

In the last 28 days, I've managed 5 not spending. This is sobering! Good call, OP. I shall try MUCH harder. I've more or less done Christmas now and the freezer's full, so no excuse 😳

DownNative · 10/11/2023 12:47

None as I'm so focused on viewing money as a tool to create a better life, so I never have urges.

I spend only to buy what I need.

In the past, I used to have lots of urges to spend and would buy. Not these days.

Pipistrellus · 10/11/2023 12:48

Most days I don't think about spending anything. I shop once a week, and buy petrol when the tank gets low but that is necessary. I rarely think about buying other things, if we need things I look for them then.

TokyoSushi · 10/11/2023 12:48

Honestly, every couple of hours! I try really hard to keep it in check and have no spend days, but it makes me very happy!

I once wrote down everything I spent for a month, and it really helped. When I could see the money adding up right there on paper, it was a fairly stark reminder of how much I was spending on nonsense, often out of sheer boredom or to cheer myself up - eg a takeaway coffee or something I really didn't need just because I was fed-up, or a couple of books from WHSmith at the station that I ended up buying just because browsing in the store passed a few minutes while waiting for my train.

Nsky62 · 10/11/2023 12:50

Depends today not thinking about it
raining again, so indoors

BigBoysDontCry · 10/11/2023 12:56

Did the food shop on Sunday, since then I have spent £1 on a baked potato at work. I've put a few things in baskets online but not actually ordered. I give myself a cooling off period and find I rarely ever actually order what I've put in the basket.

Great advice!

Zero, it's only if I need or want something that I spend money. I don't have a generic "must buy something" urge.

hattie43 · 10/11/2023 14:50

All the time . My spending is out of control right now . I'm not in debt but if I don't curtail it I'll be on my way to a shopping addiction

WorriedMillie · 10/11/2023 14:51

I can easily have no spend days if I WFH, but I do like to have a mooch around the shops/supermarket and generally get something, but it’s always stuff we need or will eat/gifts to put away, etc

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 10/11/2023 14:54

Random urges? On most days none. Maybe once a month I get a slight urge to treat myself, but I usually can't think of anything I want that much, so I often don't end up buying anything. I do order things online often, but they are mostly things I/we need. I never buy coffee etc on a work day, as I don't have the opportunity to.

Wendyspotatopeeler · 10/11/2023 14:57

I used to be like this but had to stop spending years ago when we were struggling. I log every spend and stick to a budget. I like seeing my savings grow now more than spending short term.

BertieBotts · 10/11/2023 15:01

It tends to be situational for me. If I walk past a place that's designed to get you to spend on little things like a petrol station or corner shop, or bakery, then I tend to have the urge to buy something like a fizzy drink or chocolate. If I'm in Aldi for food, I can't resist nosing at the middle aisle and picking up clothes/toys/activities for the kids or extra laundry stuff or whatever.

Random amazon, clothes shopping, toys etc hardly ever. It makes me anxious to spend money in that way so I tend to put off doing it until it's really really necessary. Though Primark is lethal, if I go in there "for a look round" I always get tempted by something.

But I will tack unnecessary things onto a shop when I have to buy something 🤔 I hadn't thought about this before actually. That's quite an interesting one.

FallingAutumnLeaf · 10/11/2023 15:14

Erm,

Saturday - longer trousers for DS2.
Sunday - massive tesco shop and petrol
Thursday - bread and loo roll in tesco.

Can't see why I'd need to spend anything else before food shop and more petrol.

Aurasauras · 10/11/2023 16:36

I am definitely seeing a link in myself between being fed up/bored/unhappy and buying things. I need to get a spreadsheet I think.

UsingChangeofName · 10/11/2023 17:48

None.

I mean, obviously I do spend money on things I need to, but I can't say I've "had an urge to spend some money" in my life.

I would only be browsing on line if I were looking for something I need. I don't randomly look at on-line shops or auction sites.
I do like a rummage in the charity shops in our local High Street when I have time, but I only buy something that I will then wear, I've never thought "I need to spend some money this morning" and gone out to try to do so.

margotrose · 10/11/2023 17:50

I only really get "the urge" if it's something I need or it's something I think the cats/dog would like Grin

gannett · 10/11/2023 17:53

Are the people who feel this urge very affluent? And have always been very affluent? Like... never had to think about where the money is coming from?

I've never once had this urge. For most of my life I've had to be very careful about money and it's left me with frugal habits that I don't want to let go of, even though I'm more comfortable now. I don't even like spending money on things I like.

Of course I know what it's like to want certain things but the idea of spending money actually puts me off buying them a lot of the time, and the idea of wanting to spend money just for the sake of it... I can't comprehend that.

NotFastButFurious · 10/11/2023 17:53

Rarely, I tend to just buy what I need, when I need it. I don’t enjoy shopping and never really go just to browse.
