Currently on a no spend couple of days. Urges so far:-
morningcoffee/oj
cute dress on sale
semi necessary piece of uniform my child only has one of
idly browsing auction site- at least three things that have been on my”one day” list
lunch

It’s only 12.30 and resisted all those urges to spend!

Yes , I like mini treats on a regular basis

39and · 10/11/2023 18:01

All the time!

BlackJumpsuit · 10/11/2023 18:02

@gannet
Sadly not...in my case the addictive/impulsive urge is heavily influenced by ADHD as my brain tries to find sources of dopamine.

See also alcohol but I've knocked that one on the head!

Yes , I like mini treats on a regular basis

I just buy treats with my weekly shop. Dark chocolate, bacon for the weekend, some weeks a bottle of breakfast juice for my teen.

drspouse · 10/11/2023 18:02

What do you mean by the "urge to spend"?
I think "I'd like a coffee" or "DD needs something for her Halloween costume so I'll go on Vinted" not "I want to spend money".
I was annoyed yesterday that I'd forgotten to pack a lunch and usually there is a food outlet with nice wraps near work but it was shut so I had to have a bacon bun from a different shop which was not what I wanted for lunch. I very much had an urge NOT to spend money but I was hungry!

NotAHoot · 10/11/2023 18:06

I don't buy things very often at all really...

Rarely buy clothes, there's nowhere near my work where I can get a coffee, so that isn't an issue. I finish work at 1 o'clock (early shifts) so have lunch at home.

I've had a stressful day though and am going out in a minute for wine or takeaway. Food and wine are my weakness!

I also got lots of vouchers for my bday recently so will spend those when I next go shopping.

I have to say I do, a lot, and it’s something I am very actively trying to cut back on, for many reasons.

Environmental reasons, so much stuff is just not necessary, and I do feel guilty about contributing to that.
Money- obviously. Although we are comfortable ish, we’d definitely be better off if I bought even half as much as I do.
Habit- a lot of it is habits I could break. We live in a nice area where a lot of shops are instantly available a two min walk from my door, and a lot of ‘popping to the shops’ for something to do isn’t ideal at all.
The curse of bloody Instagram- honestly this one is something I’ve worked really hard on curbing. Especially around this time of year when all the Christmas stuff is around.

Also, recently we had a big sort out and gave lots to charity, are doing a big tip/recycling run next weekend and it did really make me think about how much we have accumulated.

In the new year I am going to massively scale back on everything as it’s just silly. I am also hugely aware of the fact I have been in a position to buy nice things, and do also give a lot to charity eg I always do several Christmas present appeals and always do a couple of big supermarket food bank shops in the run up to Christmas.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 10/11/2023 18:18

I buy lunch or a coke at work regularly but that’s it really.
DH buys top up food shop’s more regularly than I would like.
We cancelled Amazon prime and that’s helped my random purchases. It makes me stop and think rather than just press buy.

easylikeasundaymorn · 10/11/2023 18:22

there was a similar thread on here a while ago - it really opened my eyes to the way people have an actual urge to spend money/get enjoyment from buying stuff - I very very rarely get the urge to buy anything! I can go months only getting necessities, i.e. pretty much just a food shop once a week. (I do still spend money e.g. on going out, eating out, gym, activities etc. just not on 'things' and never on impulse/or to 'treat' myself).

Before that I was a bit smug that I was so good at saving and must admit was a bit like 'I don't know why so many people are struggling for money/to get a house deposit/etc, when I found it quite easy' but then I realised if you aren't tempted by something it's not really a great example of strength of character if you don't get/do it!

In the same way as if you don't have a sweet tooth it's not hard to say no to dessert! (whereas that for me IS a struggle!)

bonzaitree · 10/11/2023 18:29

I don’t generally want things so when I do fancy something I act on it

Libertass · 10/11/2023 18:33

Er, I don’t really get ‘the urge to spend money’ at all. If anything, the opposite is the case in that I often struggle to justify spending on non-essentials or unnecessary stuff despite being financially comfortable. The voice in my head saying ‘four bloody quid for a cup of coffee? Bugger that!’ is always there, and probably always will be.

It is possible that a reluctance to waste money and the achieving of a degree of financial security are two sides of the same coin, of course….

nightnurse82 · 10/11/2023 18:36

All day. Every day ☹️

WannaLiveInABubble · 10/11/2023 18:39

I need no spend days. I spend daily. I need to be more organised. Drawcash and leave bank card at home to stop over spending.

Gerrataere · 10/11/2023 18:49

I suspect that (and have a referral) I have ADHD, which is relevant to my experience…

I have a huge issue with spending for a ‘happy hit’ (dopamine). I usually can keep it to little things, but once in a while I’ll convince myself I need a ‘big’ purchase. I get obsessed with an item, convince myself I will use it every day, start a hobby/business/scheme with said item. I know I don’t need it. But the thought of it almost becomes obsessive (almost painful and causes negative emotions) until I often crack and get it. The anticipation of getting the item is like waiting for Christmas, its arrival and unpacking is better than that. Then the inevitable happens and it quickly gets forgotten about until the next ‘thing’ catches my eye.

Facebook Marketplace is awful for my impulsive issues. I will see things I categorically don’t need but my brain goes ‘oh that’s cheap for that item!’. Luckily I never go through with these as it means having to drive and pay people in person for said items. Big no no 🤣.

Zero, it's only if I need or want something that I spend money. I don't have a generic "must buy something" urge.

This.

NeelyOHara1 · 10/11/2023 18:55

I'm the opposite, a thriftaholic 😀

IDontHateRainbows · 10/11/2023 19:09

All the time. I'm a spendaholic. I'm trying to Reign it in as my current job is ending soon. I've set myself a challenge of going a week with very minimal spending and then next time I'll try to beat it. If i get any urges I'll tell myself if I still really want it in a weeks time then maybe. But I'll probably have forgotten about it by then
