To think self checkouts in clothes shops is a step too far

Went shopping to get my dd some new clothes today. Noticed H and M had self service checkouts... tills were open too though. Then I went to M&S and tills were only for returns or exchanges and to pay you had to use self service. I tolerate self checkouts in supermarkets but when I am buying clothes, I expect some sort of service. What struck me is that in my local M and S they sell Jaeger...a blouse was £125. I assume their coats would be at least a couple of hundred quid. It really irks me and no way would I spend hundreds of pounds on an item of clothing and have to ring it up a the checkout myself. I think it's really crappy to be honest... anyone else agree?

Self serve bars wonder if that'll be a thing in the future

How about cook your own food too, or perhaps heat it up in microwave like some places do ?
How utterly depressing the future sounds.

Hate self checkouts I have put stuff down and walked out where there is no cashier to pay.

Why not check beforehand then instead of making someone else return the stuff you picked up?

Never understand what point such actions make when the employee has no control over the situation.

You don't wash new clothing that everyone has handled?**

And still pay a tip too (if in the US).

I agree with you, OP. I first saw this recently in the big M&S in Westfield, London. I had moan about it to the staff member who was supervising the self checkout area and she said loads of customers have complained and the staff all hate it too. It's horrible for clothes shopping and really puts me off, you might as well shop online.

Was accosted by this yesterday and that too at Bluewater. Very disappointing and somewhat depressing to have to stuff a bulky bathrobe into a bag myself surrounded by machines. Sad times indeed.
