I've been burned buying on vinted, what to do now?

I bought a winter coat on vinted which was advertised as being in "very good" condition. I got it yesterday, quickly tried it on without giving it a proper going over and thought it was fine so I left positive feedback.

I wore it out for the first time today and the problems became clear. The filling has separated and clumped up in areas all over the coat leaving some areas with no filling and others with too much. None of that was mentioned in the ad or during the buying process.

It looks a bit crap and after it on for half an hour my clothes underneath were virtually stuck to me.

WWYD?

Once you've said that everything is okay Vinted release the funds to the buyer and will refuse to get involved so unfortunately there's nothing you can do now

CalistoNoSolo · 08/11/2023 10:05

Caveat emptor.

Sartre · 08/11/2023 10:05

Nothing you can do now because you marked it as ok. You’ll just have to chalk it up to experience and remember to always fully check things over before saying they’re ok. Hope it wasn’t too expensive.

Indeed. I'm debating contacting the seller and asking her to accept it back somehow but I doubt she will be prepared to, as you say it's too late to raise a proper dispute.

I'm kicking myself for being so quick to say all was fine. £30 down the drain 😔

Stacia544 · 08/11/2023 10:07

It was only £30 so not an insane amount but still a loss. I think I will relist it, be honest about the fault and let it go at a loss.

Sorry you had this but I guess it is on you not checking properly etc. at least it wasn't loads and a learning curve for next time 😊

RudsyFarmer · 08/11/2023 10:13

To be fair even if you hadn’t have been happy with the item you would still have had a complete fucking nightmare getting it sorted through Vinted. So forgive yourself that.

PrimalOwl10 · 08/11/2023 10:15

30quid for a second hand coat? I got a new on on the sale 25 percent off at select for 34 quid. I'm suprised you spend that much I sold a faux fur jacket for 2 quid.

wited · 08/11/2023 10:16

Nothing you can do now. The buyer won't accept it back unless they're v nice as they've been paid.

tealsea · 08/11/2023 10:22

Is it a down jacket? You could try running it through a tumbler dryer cycle see if that evens up / plumps up the filling. Mine are always like that if they get wet but bounce back fine once through the dryer.

That's what I was going to suggest

A brand new coat for £30 is likely to be shite quality. Id rather spend on second hand on a coat that is worth far more and better quality.

fruitbrewhaha · 08/11/2023 10:31

When you say the filling isn’t even, is it down? Could fix with a wash and tumble dry with a tennis ball. The feathers can clump together if it get wet.

Maleficentient · 08/11/2023 10:31

Put it in the tumble dryer with clean tennis balls and it will help redistribute the filling

Wexone · 08/11/2023 11:09

@PrimalOwl10 when looking to buy a coat i look for a coat that will last me a good few years and is well made. A coat of 34 pounds is not going to last. I rather spend more on a second hand coat a that is well made and will last.
The attitude of cheap clothing is what is wrong with what's in shops at the mo - people not willing to pay for quality anymore so shops filled with cheap cheap clothing that falls apart after two wears
Op i have a fab cream big puffa coat from ralph lauren - bought on sale two years ago - it has duck down filling in it- it gets flat every so often so i stick it in the tumble dryer with those drying balls and it comes up all puffed up and cosy. Its such a warm coat and i love it - still going strong two years after bought it and will be in a good few years too
Please dont let it put you off vinted, you can get some amazing stuff on it

Stacia544 · 08/11/2023 11:09

I'm not sure if it's down or not, it didn't say down on the listing. It doesn't feel like feathers inside.

Filling aside it's also too long for me anyway. I'll give the tumble dryer thing a go and stick it back on vinted and chalk it down to a lesson learned for buying a coat without trying it on.

£30 seems alot for a second hand coat but it would have been alot more expensive new.

Wexone · 08/11/2023 11:14

@Stacia544 depends on the brand and what it is made of ? And how much it was originally ? That to me would deem if expensive or not, plus i would also include cost per wear, so if its something you would wear every day in winter for three months of year approx - then it would cost you 33 pence a day - thats wearing it 90 days

Lovemycat2023 · 08/11/2023 11:41

Was it marked as good or very good? Good means that it does have some faults, but they should be pointed out.

sorry - just re-read and it says “very good”. Yes, you should have disputed it, but nothing you can do now other than leave an honest review of the seller

Stacia544 · 08/11/2023 13:31

I'm not sure how much it was originally, the brand is Next. The advert stated "very good"

The seller read my messaged and has blanked me, so that's nice 🙄

As I've already left her feedback I don't think I can write anything else can I?

No you can't write anything else. Appreciate it's not ideal but as far as the seller is concerned the deal is done, they've been paid and are under no obligation to do anything else, I wouldn't respond either if it was me either. You need to be careful in the future about marking things as "ok" without checking. This is a caveat emptor moment.

WillowCraft · 08/11/2023 15:25

Unfortunate but even if you'd noticed the fault immediately I think you'd have had a hard time getting a refund. They don't refund postage either even if it's faulty. Vinted is a seller's market. I would only buy things on there either as new, or very cheap, or if I was willing to take a gamble on something I really wanted.

You can go back and edit the review you gave the seller, describing clearly the fault with the item and that the seller hadn’t disclosed this.
Follow this with sending a politely worded and reasonable message to the seller - do greet them and wish them a nice day (courtesy goes a long way)… state that you will happily and immediately remove the bad review if they furnish you with a refund.
I have had some success with the above approach.

If they are a seller who sells a lot of stuff with excellent reviews, they won’t risk their reputation for one item. Good luck!

Read the reviews for a seller carefully, as a dishonest person won’t be able to hide it, but honest mistakes can happen for a multitude of reasons, but can then be rectified.
