Is this obsessive about veggies? (Lighthearted)

I don't really enjoy a main meal without a side of veg/salad so I always make sure the plate has something on it. Doesn't really matter if sometimes it's frozen veg or tinned peas or whatever. I have just always thought you need veggies for a full meal.

Now it's not always super healthy veggies, for example on a roast dinner I would probably do at least 3 different veg but that would be carrot and turnip with loads of butter or cauli cheese for example.

So to tonight. I made a chicken Katsu curry for dinner. Before serving I said to DH, "oh I saw something online about crispy kale, so I'm doing that on the side. It's kinda like crispy seaweed I think." He starts laughing his head off. Kale!!! You're bloody obsessive about this veg thing!

I didn't tell him that to make the katsu sauce I had boiled up carrots and onions and blended them in 🤣

Now it is lighthearted as he is only joking even though he would happily live on stodge and carbs!

So AIBU to be obsessed with veg? 🤣

Kale is gross. So on that basis alone YABU.

(No, you're not "obsessive" for wanting to eat a vaguely balanced meal for dinner).

grottyb · 07/11/2023 19:41

I include veg with lots of meals but I wouldn’t bother adding extra to Katsu particularly if it’s got them in the sauce.

Crispy Kale is yum!

Orangello · 07/11/2023 19:42

Crispy kale is lovely and I can't really imagine eating dinner without any veg in it, I don't think it's odd.

Elephanta · 07/11/2023 19:42

I hope your salad is massive or you won’t be welcome on MN.

MyPrettyLittlePony · 07/11/2023 19:48

UANBU! Home made Katsu curry (which I’m guessing is what you’ve done) has onions and carrots in and crispy kale is lovely!

Butterflysunshine01 · 07/11/2023 19:52

I don't think you're obsessive, I always have to have some kind of veg/colour on my plate! Preferably a few, just for taste and variety!

FlickyCrumble · 07/11/2023 19:52

I’m like you always have a side of veg. We had katsu last night but a shop bought sauce but I still stir fried onions peppers and mushrooms into the rice and added loads of broccoli on the side. Homemade carbonara tonight with mushrooms and broccoli.

elp30 · 07/11/2023 20:01

My 31-year-old son came by my house recently and brought with him a rotisserie chicken. I saw him just eating the chicken so I heated up some corn and green beans to make a complete meal (in my eyes, anyways) and said the same thing to me as your husband, OP. He said I was "obsessed with vegetables". No, I just thought his meal looked like it needed more.

Whatever.

Next time, I'll leave him to his chicken and chicken only.

cardibach · 07/11/2023 20:08

I wouldn’t necessarily add veg on the side of a dish like curry which has lots of veg in it anyway - which I would guess was your DH’s point…

addler · 07/11/2023 21:03

I wouldn't consider it a normal meal unless it had vegetables with it (days when yoh just want something like a cheese toastie not withstanding) and I'm quite portly so I don't think it's a measure of health!

ApolloandDaphne · 07/11/2023 21:05

Hi mum, how are you??

AnnaMasse · 07/11/2023 21:08

I've got to have either vegetables (hot meal) or salad. It's important and they are good for you. Red or green pepper, onion, potato, sweet potato, any kind of kale, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, courgettes, pick any three.

JaceLancs · 07/11/2023 21:08

DP jokes I’m obsessed with vitamins!
mainly he means I make him eat vegetables fruit or salad as part of every meal

Same. Yes to veggies but no need for a side to everything.

HanSB · 07/11/2023 21:17

I always try and add at least some veg to every meal too. I made carbonara tonight with added mushrooms and shredded greens in it and my daughter commented on why as restaurants only have pancetta!

Why do you need veg with it if there is veg in it?

Tighginn · 07/11/2023 21:23

Is meat and two veg not a very average UK dinner?

Pipistrellus · 07/11/2023 21:28

Crispy kale would ruin it for me, I only like it fermented with garlic and chilli.

WithIcePlease · 07/11/2023 21:29

I've got chicken katsu tonight too
DH has rice but I've got broccoli and I've done a carrot salad too. And katsu has carrots and mushrooms in (hairy dieter's recipe)

AnnaMasse · 07/11/2023 21:30

I love kale, especially Cavolo Nero, and, of any variety, the white stalky bits. I really like the sort of 'iron-rich' taste.

ltappleby · 07/11/2023 21:30

I always have more vegetables than main meal, you’ll end with way too many calories otherwise

LoserWinner · 07/11/2023 21:35

I changed how I ate last year and consciously included a lit more salads and steamed veg. Now I can’t imagine enjoying a meal without green veg or salad. I crave the freshness of salad as much as I used to crave chocolate!

dessertorchide · 07/11/2023 21:36

Always veg or salad on side of every meal preferably as well as in the meal for us.

How are people getting their 5 veg 2 fruit otherwise if they’re not having with each meal?

PaminaMozart · 07/11/2023 21:40

cardibach · 07/11/2023 21:18

Why do you need veg with it if there is veg in it?

Because vegetables ought to be the main component of most meals? If you want to eat a healthy diet anyway… How does the saying go: “eat food, not too much, mostly plants”.

Pipistrellus · 07/11/2023 21:40

It still counts if it's in the meal rather than as a side.
