Is this obsessive about veggies? (Lighthearted)

I don't really enjoy a main meal without a side of veg/salad so I always make sure the plate has something on it. Doesn't really matter if sometimes it's frozen veg or tinned peas or whatever. I have just always thought you need veggies for a full meal.

Now it's not always super healthy veggies, for example on a roast dinner I would probably do at least 3 different veg but that would be carrot and turnip with loads of butter or cauli cheese for example.

So to tonight. I made a chicken Katsu curry for dinner. Before serving I said to DH, "oh I saw something online about crispy kale, so I'm doing that on the side. It's kinda like crispy seaweed I think." He starts laughing his head off. Kale!!! You're bloody obsessive about this veg thing!

I didn't tell him that to make the katsu sauce I had boiled up carrots and onions and blended them in 🤣

Now it is lighthearted as he is only joking even though he would happily live on stodge and carbs!

So AIBU to be obsessed with veg? 🤣

Because vegetables ought to be the main component of most meals? If you want to eat a healthy diet anyway… How does the saying go: “eat food, not too much, mostly plants”.

You can make a chilli for example with far more veg than meat. Onion, carrot, tomato, peppers, beans, whatever. They can easily be the main component without extra as a side.

Titsywoo · 07/11/2023 21:46

I aim to have 50% veg/salad, 25% protein, 20% starchy carb and 5% added fat to most meals so no YANBU. We are supposed to eat more veg than anything else.

I changed how I ate last year and consciously included a lit more salads and steamed veg. Now I can’t imagine enjoying a meal without green veg or salad. I crave the freshness of salad as much as I used to crave chocolate!

Same - I used to have a burger and fries with no salad at all. Now I can't eat them without lots of shredded lettuce, carrot etc. Weird how your tastebuds can change!

Dilbertian · 07/11/2023 21:50

Entirely normal. Your dh is the weird vegephobic.

Veggie curry? Curry that’s mostly veg with a bit of meat? It’s easy to get a lot of veg into a curry.

I always have more vegetables than main meal, you’ll end with way too many calories otherwise

But they can be in the dish not on the side. If you make a curry with plenty of veg in, why does it need veg on the side too to be healthy?

Crispy kale would ruin it for me, I only like it fermented with garlic and chilli.

Uk kimchi?

Tighginn · 08/11/2023 16:11

Uk kimchi?

I don't know. Like I make sauerkraut but with garlic and chilli. I don't know what makes kimchi kimchi.

Naimee87 · 08/11/2023 16:47

Growing up for tea, we would always have a salad before the main meal.
So, yep always have vegetables with a meal or beforehand, a pepper, carrots, cherry tomatoes, cucumber a meal is not a meal without vegetables the fresher the better

Sauerkrautsandwich · 08/11/2023 16:54

I have veg in/with basically every lunch/dinner. Veg and fruit are most of my weekly shop🤷 I thought that's normal to eat fruit and veg but tbf I grew up with big garden and lots of homegrown abroad.

Kale is nice in many dishes!

SpringingJoy · 08/11/2023 17:00

I always like some veg or salad on the side.

It's not a health/weight/calories thing, I just prefer it. The meal seems incomplete without, to me.

I love lasagne but it would seem a bit sickly/too rich without the odd mouthful of peas. Same with most pasta dishes, we always have peas/sweetcorn/broccoli on the side.

Kale is gross. So on that basis alone YABU.

(No, you're not "obsessive" for wanting to eat a vaguely balanced meal for dinner).

This. ^ And no you're not obsessive about veg @TVaddict23 ! I always have some veg or salad with whatever I am eating. Except when it's curry or pizza! I don't think it's that rare!

As a pp said it's not a measure of health - or being slim either. Lots of people I know have veg with almost every meal, and are quite overweight.

What a very odd reaction from your husband. Have you only been together a very short time? Surely he has noticed before that you have veg on the side of your plate? Confused

bellac11 · 08/11/2023 19:19

It doesnt sound obsessive to me, I find that a strange word to use about a situation like this.

When people are talking about their '5 a day', they need to remember portion size, a few slices of tomato in a sandwich doesnt count, nor does shredded lettuce in a burger

Its about 80g for a portion.

Pipistrellus · 08/11/2023 19:27

My chilli has three serves of veg, about 40g of 6 things per portion in the pot. Other dinners closer to two. We eat fruit and veg in every meal though.

BarbaraofSeville · 08/11/2023 19:58

dessertorchide · 07/11/2023 21:36

Always veg or salad on side of every meal preferably as well as in the meal for us.

How are people getting their 5 veg 2 fruit otherwise if they’re not having with each meal?

I hate to break it to you, but most people don't eat anywhere near 5 a day, let alone 7/10/however many MN thinks is normal.

I probably don't manage it but I think a meal looks really unappetising without some visible veg on it. On a Katsu curry, as well as the carrots and onions in the sauce, I'd definitely put edamame beans with it, and likely pepper too.

But accusing the OP of being 'obsessed with this veg thing' is an odd way to describe it, it makes it sound like he thinks it's a new fad she's been swept up with.

dessertorchide · 08/11/2023 20:12

In Australia it’s 5 veg 2 fruit which I find more helpful, and a reminder not to have too much fruit which is easy to do.

when I’ve had katsu in Japan it’s normally served with shredded cabbage. I would add a side of maybe stir fried veg or steamed baby corn and sugar snap peas.

Red pepper powder. Much more a white pepper crowd in the uk, maybe add a shoogle?

FictionalCharacter · 08/11/2023 20:44

I don't think you're obsessed at all, that sounds like a normal and perfectly reasonable way of eating.

I agree. Kale should be left in the field and never spoken about again.

MrShady · 08/11/2023 21:18

Kale in the oven is lovely, I put peri peri salt on it when it's done

ManchesterLu · 08/11/2023 22:03

It's great to include veg when you can, but it seems a bit mad to just add it for the sake of it, when it might not go with the dish you're making.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 08/11/2023 22:45

In some other countries it is normal to eat a salad or vegetable soup if you don't have a vegetable on your plate. Good plan, too. It feels odd to me not to include them.

Onemoretimeok · 08/11/2023 22:52

I love Kale. I need something green with every meal. Either salad or green veg. I feel like my plate doesn’t look right without it.
