Looking for opinions. Context a child having a hot chocolate. (Age 7)

A hot chocolate is a treat - YANBU

A hot chocolate isn’t a treat, just a warm drink - YABU

I think it's a treat, child or adult. It's got quite a lot of sugar in it, but I'm an ogre who expects my DC to drink water or milk whereas I know a lot mainly drink squash or juice

skgnome · 07/11/2023 15:58

Both
with lots of whipped cream and mini marshmallows - treat
small cup - homemade - a warm drink

it falls in the same category as soda or a fruit shoot - not a full on treat, but not something to give on every meal either

JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots · 07/11/2023 15:58

It's just a warm drink. Made with whisked cream and marshmallows on top is a special drink though and reserved for Christmas or special occasions. I don't made food or drink a treat-it's just food and drink. Some is healthier than others but I teach my dc about balance. Dd1 drank it daily at breakfast and in the evening. She's 16 and no fillings or weight issues if that what posters will comment on.

CMOTDibbler · 07/11/2023 15:58

Hot chocolate is a big range - warm milk with a bit of cocoa in: not a treat. Hotel Chocolat : treat. Options sachet: not a treat. Hot choc with squirty cream and marshamallows treat

Lizzieregina · 07/11/2023 15:59

Hot chocolate at home - not a treat

Hot chocolate out with fancy add ons like whipped cream and sprinkles and the like - treat

RedCoffeeCup · 07/11/2023 16:00

IMO it's not a "big" treat but it's not something to have every day. Fine in moderation.

Teapot32 · 07/11/2023 16:00

It’s not a treat as in something you’d only have on a rare special occasion but it’s a treat in the sense that it’s unhealthy so also not something you’d drink daily if that even makes any sense

Londonrach1 · 07/11/2023 16:00

It's a treat for both adult or child..

VeridicalVagabond · 07/11/2023 16:00

I think of it as a treat same as a chocolate bar or a couple of biscuits... In terms of calories and sugar it's about the same (especially if you have cream and mini marshmallows which you should!). So not a "once in a blue moon" thing but also not a "four helpings a day" thing either.

Monkeymonkeymoo · 07/11/2023 16:00

I think it depends. Hot chocolate in a cafe or made at home with real chocolate flakes and topped with cream and marshmallows, definitely a treat.
A spoonful of instant powder stirred into warm milk, probably just a warm drink. Although higher in sugar than milk on it’s own so I probably wouldn’t offer it everyday.

00100001 · 07/11/2023 16:00

If it's a small hot cocoa then whatever. Like 100ml of hot chocolate isn't going to hurt if they have one everyday at breakfast or whatever.

If it's a big one with cream, sprinkles and a flake/biscuit sticking out ... Treat.

greenacrylicpaint · 07/11/2023 16:01

depends
a little chocolate powder to disguise the awful winter milk taste of silage is fine.

with cream & mashmallows or glugg of baileys on a rainy day is definitely a treat.

Frenchtoastandoj · 07/11/2023 16:02

It’s a treat - not an every day drink . How much of a treat depends on whether it’s a quick instant one at home or a real one in a cafe with toppings - but both are treats

VillageLite · 07/11/2023 16:02

I think it’s a treat - it’s sugary and might have marshmallows or cream on.

My DC would have a hot chocolate at home instead of a sweet food, and would consider it a treat.
If it was in a cafe, they would definitely consider it a treat.

Either way, they wouldn’t have more than one in the same day, whereas they could have as many other drinks (tea, water, squash) as they liked, so more treat than drink.

IncompleteSenten · 07/11/2023 16:03

I think so. A proper hot chocolate made with chocolate shavings and topped with cream, marshmallows and crumbled flake and little chocolate balls is a lovely treat.

GalileoHumpkins · 07/11/2023 16:03

I don't consider it a treat, it's just a hot drink with delusions of grandeur.

haribosmarties · 07/11/2023 16:04

It's on the spectrum of treats... like I don't think having a hot chocolate would prevent me from having another sweet treat later on...
Some of them tho with the squirty cream marshmallows, flakes and sauce.. they are a bigger treat that might make me hesitate to give any further sweet things to a child

AlwaysGinPlease · 07/11/2023 16:05

A treat? It's just a hot chocolate!

LadyChilli · 07/11/2023 16:06

It's a treat in my book even without cream etc. I think nothing of drinking umpteen cups of tea or hot squash during the day but would never have more than one hot chocolate.

Universalsnail · 07/11/2023 16:07

Depends.
If it just chocolate powder mixed with water and milk it's a warm drink.

If it's a full whipped cream marshmallow affair it's a treat.

Celebrationsnakes · 07/11/2023 16:07

A treat in our house.

TVaddict23 · 07/11/2023 16:08

A treat that I am always disappointed with! Never meets expectations.

Echobelly · 07/11/2023 16:11

Generally it's a small treat. But as others have said lots of cream and marshmallows is a bigger one.

Retrievemysanity · 07/11/2023 16:11

Normal evening drink for winter in our house. Not every night but a few times a week. A treat when it’s got whipped cream and marshmallows on. And mug huggers! When I went to France on an exchange as a teen, host family had it in a bowl for breakfast every day and dipped pain au chocolat in it. Best thing about that trip!

OnLockdown · 07/11/2023 16:12

A treat.
