Looking for opinions. Context a child having a hot chocolate. (Age 7)

A hot chocolate is a treat - YANBU

A hot chocolate isn’t a treat, just a warm drink - YABU

Its a treat, even the homemade stuff with milk. As I usually have horlicks and every now and again ill have green & blacks hot chocolate , which is divine 😋

Comedycook · 07/11/2023 16:14

It's a treat if you go out for it or if it's made with whipped cream and marshmallows on top.

Otherwise it's a standard warm drink. My dd has a hot chocolate every night before bed...she says it helps her sleep. She has a very small amount, literally a third of a mug made with milk and a teaspoon of Cadbury drinking chocolate powder.

Schlurp · 07/11/2023 16:14

It's a treat, but also turning into a daily event round here!

ginslinger · 07/11/2023 16:15

treat

Desecratedcoconut · 07/11/2023 16:16

With cream and marshmallows, a treat. Without, just a drink.

occa · 07/11/2023 16:16

Yes, it's a treat imo

Hot chocolate is a big range - warm milk with a bit of cocoa in: not a treat. Hotel Chocolat : treat. Options sachet: not a treat. Hot choc with squirty cream and marshamallows treat

This, except I have h op t choc and cream everyday 🫣

fearfuloffluff · 07/11/2023 16:16

A treat. Sweet things are treats.

We tend to keep hot choc in reserve for if we get drenched. Then it's half a tsp of powder. Marshmallow and cream version kept for high days and holidays!

DappledThings · 07/11/2023 16:17

Bit of both

SweetFemaleAttitude · 07/11/2023 16:17

I don't consider it a treat, it's just a hot drink with delusions of grandeur.

😂😂😂 love that.

Nice one from a cafe or coffee shop with whipped cream etc., treat

2 teaspoons of options with hot skimmed milk, not a treat.

ChocolateTurtle · 07/11/2023 16:19

As many posters have said, I think an ordinary hot chocolate at home is not a treat but one out with marshmallows and cream etc is. When my son was younger he went through a phase of having a small hot chocolate at breakfast time every day during the winter - probably not ideal, but not a huge deal either IMO. He's 21 now, with good health and no fillings, he prefers coffee at breakfast now.

Beautiful3 · 07/11/2023 16:33

I went through a hot chocolate phase. I thought it was just a warm drink to mix up with tea and coffee, until I piled on the weight. A basic cadburys powdered drinking chocolatemixex with milk, is 120 calories and full of sugar, and that's without cream & marshmallows! That's equivalent to a twirl finger! So yes it's definitely a treat.

FancyFanny · 07/11/2023 16:38

It's a treat in my eyes because a warm drink to me is tea or coffee. I wouldn't drink hot chocolate, even the instant kind, daily because it's full of sugar and fat.

Notcookie · 07/11/2023 16:39

I have one every morning. Organic milk and cacao powder. No sugar. Very healthy.

sunlovingcriminal · 07/11/2023 16:39

Celebrationsnakes · 07/11/2023 16:07

A treat in our house.

Us too!

Jewelspun · 07/11/2023 16:42

It's a straightforward hot drink but toucan tart it up to become a treat by adding cream, marshmallows, sprinkles etc.

I have a mug of Spanish hot chocolate most days as I don't drink teas and I prefer iced coffee to hot coffee.

Coffeerum · 07/11/2023 16:44

Of course it’s a treat.

Irregardless · 07/11/2023 16:46

What do YOU think op?

Maddy70 · 07/11/2023 16:49

It's very sugary so shouldn't be drunk routinely (personally I don't like it as its so sweet)
So I would say a treat

SugaredCookie · 07/11/2023 16:50

For a child it’s definitely a treat

WhosAfraidOfVirginalWolves · 07/11/2023 16:53

Depends on what type. Generally if I have hot chocolate, it's the "light" instant stuff mixed with boiling water. Whilst it may not be healthy, at 42 calories a serving, it feels a bit miserly to call it a treat.

MrsAvocet · 07/11/2023 16:53

Would be considered torture by everyone in our house 🤮 but I think that for those who like it, those massive ones with whipped cream etc that you see served in coffee shops should definitely be occasional treats as they are so sugary. Just plain made at home probably counts as normal hot drink.

TheGrimSqueakersFlea · 07/11/2023 16:53

It's just a hot drink

StaunchMomma · 07/11/2023 17:01

If it's bought while out, or if you're making at home but adding eg cream and marshmallow, it's a treat.

nosyupnorth · 07/11/2023 17:04

A lot of people are discussing types of hot chocolate, but I think the real divide here is in how people define treat.

It's not a treat as in something only for a special occasion, it is a treat as in it is something outside of a basic meal plan.

IMO it's not a basic drink like water to have whenever you're thirsty, but it's not something to restrict only to certain occasions. I wouldn't bat an eye at a 7 year old having a hot chocolate (there's nothing wrong with sugary/fatty 'treat' foods in moderation) but it would be A hot chocolate and would probably be in lieu of a pudding, not alongside or drinking multiple cups throughout the day.
