Chickenpox School Drama

Someone please tell me I’m not insane
(NC for this)

My eldest (DS5) is in reception and had Chickenpox about 6 weeks ago. Had two weeks off school.

my youngest DS (26m) has now got it, usually goes to nursery but obviously is off. It’s very mild to the point I doubted it would be CP but the GP Has said it is and sometimes it can incubate for that long.

one of the mums from the WhatsApp class group has text me saying it’s not appropriate for me to bring my oldest DC in? Her argument was that there are a few of them with very young babies/newborns and it could be dangerous if they got it. My oldest shouldn’t be going in because he is “in contact” with it and could pass it on to their kids who could subsequently pass on to baby siblings.

When I said this isn’t going to happen (politely) she told me that I’m already looking after youngest so what’s the difference with another at home? I told her that’s not the point when DS5 has already missed plenty of school due to having chickenpox himself.

Now there is a passive aggressive reminder on the WhatsApp group reminding everyone to “be considerate of other families” not to send their children to school if they are unwell… not from the same mum but another one who she is good friends with

seriosuly? DS isn’t even ill , his brother is! And he’s had it so really unlikely he will pass it on.

Tell me this is batshit please because it’s really wound me up

I would send a snarky (fake polite) reminder to all parents that if they’re concerned about chicken pox they can always get their children vaccinated against it. I did and my son and the other girl in his playgroup who were vaccinated were the only children not to get it. Many of the parents stuck at home for weeks as one of their children passed it on to the next mentioned to me that they wished they had done the same.

A bit shit for anyone who can't afford it. Not a very kind thing to post in a class group!

Likely too late now anyway, if it's in the class odds are that anyone who wasn't already immune has already caught it. It went round my daughter's p1 class last year and everyone who hadn't already had it at nursery or been vaccinated did catch it.

ohtowinthelottery · 07/11/2023 15:12

She's crazy. Your DS is the most unlikely child to be the cause of an infection. He'll be immune for a while - if not forever. They're far more at risk from children who haven't yet had it as they could easily be harbouring the infection pre spot outbreak.

Universalsnail · 07/11/2023 15:46

She's needs to get a grip

Deidres · 07/11/2023 17:55

Update… 2 kids got sent home for diarrhoea and vomiting today. When her daughter ran out and said “so and so was sick on the carpet” WhatsApp mum looked like she was going to combust 😂

also a few dodgy looks from certain mums at pick up when I brought youngest, but many more with sympathy for his sad spotty face

Silence the group. Load of misinformed batshit women with no brains too much time on their hands. I bet they don’t work

ColleenDonaghy · 07/11/2023 19:03

God it's terrible but part of me hopes her DC pukes on the carpet tomorrow.

PrimarilyParented · 07/11/2023 23:18

I appreciate that, but personally I’m not sure how people can afford to take unpaid leave if their child has chicken pox more than the cost of the vaccination. For me I only get paid for day 1 of my child’s absence and so I would have taken a huge pay hit to stay off work for up to 10 days if my child got chicken pox. I’m not wealthy but paid for the vaccination for this reason.

Charliebrow · 07/11/2023 23:22

if Your son has already had it then how can he pass it on as he’s immune. Newborns don’t get chicken pox as they’re immune for a few months from antibodies they get from mum in the womb. My 2 older kids both had chicken pox when my baby was 4 months old and despite living with 2 siblings with chicken pox, baby didn’t catch it.

It’s going to look like her what’s app msg was aimed at these mums now 🤣🤣🤣
(The sick bug mums)

Also, hope your little one is getting over the CP.
One of mine hasn’t had it yet despite being exposed sooo many times..

adomizo · 08/11/2023 09:55

So much misinformation on that what's app group about how diseases spread etc. Madness. Your child is now immune. End of. No need for anyone to be giving you funny looks....the whole chickenpox thing here is so bizarre anyway. Many children are merrily spreading it before anyone knows they have it. If only we had vaccination like many other countries.....Good luck for the rest of school life with this lot 😅
