AIBU to want a normal kettle and toaster?

We have just had our kitchen done and have changed a lot of our old appliances. DP does not want an electric kettle or toaster as it ‘looks cluttered’ and spoils the new kitchen.
It’s only been a few weeks and I’ve had enough of doing toast under the grill and the stove top kettle that makes a horrific noise (that annoys the rest of the family who are still in bed) if not attended to immediately! It’s also much slower.

Early morning starts are busy and stressful enough without this. I have to give the cooker my full attention or breakfast is ruined!

AIBU to pop to Argos and buy a normal toaster and kettle?

The qettle also boils to 100c and is significantly cheaper than the quooker

I love our boiling water tap but I do have a toaster on display - bought a dualit one when we moved and I think it looks lovely on display

I've just done my kitchen, to my mothers horror, I've got even more appliances "cluttering" the work tops, I call it decorating Grin.

First thing I bought was a new kettle and toaster because the old ones clashed (then there's the microwave, rice cooker, bread maker, stand mixer and soup maker)

Homes are for living in. If it's not working for you, then get the kettle and toaster. I hate this trend of nothing on the work surfaces. So clinical and not at all homely.

gotomomo · 07/11/2023 12:21

@VickyEadieofThigh

Mine too, spice rack, large jars with ingredients that don't fit in the cupboard below ... I use mine daily to cook from scratch

SisterhoodNotCisterhood · 07/11/2023 12:29

I'm my sister's work had those Quooker style taps put in. The electricity bill rocketed.
She just had a house built and specifically requested they take the Quooker tap off the designs.

PrudeyTwoShoes · 07/11/2023 12:53

What a nightmare! DH shouldn't get a say unless he's prepared to make the tea and toast himself. Ignore him and treat yourself to new set.

Purplebunnie · 07/11/2023 12:58

We don't have a toaster. Toast done under our grill is way nicer..

Kettle is one that you can vary the temperature it boils to ie 90 for coffee, hot water bottle etc. We only boil to 100 for tea now.

I don’t have a kettle we have a boiling water tap, I keep the toaster in the cupboard, I hate stuff on the surfaces too!

edited to add, my tap is boiling! If you fill a saucepan and put it straight on the stove it boils straight away. Some can be lukewarm though!

Edited

Same here, the toaster isn't used enough to be on the side at all times and only takes seconds to get it out and plug it in.

Love our boiling water tap! Ours make a perfect cup of tea, we set the boiler to a good temperature.

OP given your set up i would go buy a toaster and kettle. If the toast can go in a drawer/cupboard that'll help as a compromise but the kettle being out isn't an issue, they aren't huge! You live there too.

MaybeSmaller · 07/11/2023 13:42

YANBU.

If you drink tea and eat toast every day, you NEED an electric kettle and toaster. End of. I couldn't abide having to do toast under the grill all of the time, especially if I was doing it for 3-4 people.

Buy the appliances, and make it your DP's job to put them away and take them out of the cupboard each day if he hates "clutter" so much. (Personally I don't count things that I use all the time as clutter.)

My mum has a stove top kettle and it drives me potty. It takes her about 20 minutes to make a cup of tea.

FrangipaniBlue · 07/11/2023 13:57

YANBU to want a toaster.

YABU for putting a new kitchen in, knowing you didn't want a kettle on the worktop, and not having a boiling water tap installed.

I wish someone would actually explain to me why so many English people’s ambition seems to be to not have a kettle or toaster on their kitchen work surfaces.

I remember being invited for a coffee by a neighbour just after I had moved to a village and she fished her electric kettle out of a drawer, emptied and put it away again afterwards. Entirely bare work surfaces.

Over time I realised it was a widespread thing. Seemed to align with the lower-middle class. It also seems to explain the Quooker thing.

I am English and don't know anyone who keeps their toaster or kettle in a cupboard I agree it seems an odd concept. I assume it is only people who like an extremely minimalist look who do that. I prefer a much more lived in and comfortable look

Forsakenalmosthuman · 07/11/2023 14:34

I keep the toaster on top of some cupboards because space is at a premium (my house, like its neighbours, was built by a bachelor back in the 1920s, and apparently he didn't see the need for more than a pocket handkerchief-sized space to work in!) and because it tends to be used only at weekends. But the kettle is in constant use when I cook and I don't see how it could be got rid of.

Wexone · 07/11/2023 14:44

@SisterhoodNotCisterhood something not right there, an electric tap is more cost effective than a kettle It costs less to keep a water boiler hot than it does to constantly refill and boil a kettle. This is because your kettle uses a large amount of energy for a short amount of time, whereas a hot water boiler uses a smaller amount of electricity for a larger amount of time. If her electricity bill sky rocketed it certainly was not solely down to the boiling tap

Ihateslugs · 07/11/2023 18:24

I never though of making my own cover for the Kenwood Chef! I have a sewing machine so could have had a go!

I am like a child at Christmas looking at my new kitchen and thinking where I am going to put everything. I am unreasonably excited about the usb charging point on one of the sockets to charge my phone! And also the bin cupboard with two bins, one for general waste, one for tins and cans with a small food waste one which hooks over the rim of one of the big bins. There is also a shelf, probably for bin bags, but I’m going to put my paper recycling on it.

Autumn1990 · 07/11/2023 18:37

I would buy a nice new matching toaster and kettle. Lots available now in different styles.
I do keep my toaster in a cupboard but that’s because I’m on solid fuel and it would get very dusty. Three stove top kettles and an electric one out all the time!

LambMomo · 07/11/2023 18:48

My MIL keeps the toaster in a drawer as she can’t bare ‘clutter’. And has a drawer full of crumbs. No thanks.

She needs a handheld hoover.

TerfTalking · 07/11/2023 18:57

I have a Quooker so need for a kettle but I have a lovely stainless steel Dualit toaster on show.

the air fryer is kept in a cupboard though

Oh she has one….

But where would she keep it?

LambMomo · 07/11/2023 20:57

Fieldofbrokenpromises · 07/11/2023 20:56

It’s kept in a cupboard of course!

Paynefully · 07/11/2023 21:00

What about a hot water dispenser instead of a kettle?

Spirro · 07/11/2023 21:22

I have a breakfast cupboard. The door slides open and you can use the kettle and toaster inside the cupboard. Then (after you’ve let them cool a bit) you just close the door and hey presto, it looks tidy.

OldPerson · 07/11/2023 23:54

Sounds like the two of you didn't really think through your vision of the kitchen. Stove top kettle?? You know you can just quietly boil water in pan without all the furring up of kettles?? But if you're at loggerheads, ask DH to make tea and toast for a month to evaluate, and if he finds it no trouble, and the smoke alarms don't go off frequently, swap a chore with him, so that he carries on in charge of breakfast. Or discuss, save up and buy a nice toaster and kettle that goes with your new decor.
