AIBU to want a normal kettle and toaster?

StonedRoses · 07/11/2023 10:22

We have just had our kitchen done and have changed a lot of our old appliances. DP does not want an electric kettle or toaster as it ‘looks cluttered’ and spoils the new kitchen.
It’s only been a few weeks and I’ve had enough of doing toast under the grill and the stove top kettle that makes a horrific noise (that annoys the rest of the family who are still in bed) if not attended to immediately! It’s also much slower.

Early morning starts are busy and stressful enough without this. I have to give the cooker my full attention or breakfast is ruined!

AIBU to pop to Argos and buy a normal toaster and kettle?

I’m from a traditionally less is more/clean surfaces country, but I don’t know anyone who hides their kettle if they are a tea drinker. The kitchen is for using.

Onethingatatime23 · 07/11/2023 11:01

Oh fucking hell yes. Get thee to Argos. I have a bean to cup machine but still obviously need a kettle.

I had no toaster or means of grilling (just had a double oven but no grill setting in the apartment) while on holiday this year and I really missed toast!

JaninaDuszejko · 07/11/2023 11:01

I'm not keen on clutter but I still have a kettle, toaster, breadmaker, microwave, vintage marmalade jar full of wooden spoons, a couple of wooden chopping boards, three mortar and pestles (SIL kept giving them to us as presents so I put them out so she knew how many we had 😂), a kitchen caddy, an onion bowl, garlic jar, butter dish, a breadbin and a radio on the kitchen counters. I do have a large kitchen so we still have several metres of workspace and I have a Ken Wood cupboard for the less frequently used pieces of kitchen equipment.

@StonedRoses your husband should have planned a pantry cupboard to hold the toaster and kettle if he didn't want them on display. When we redo our kitchen then I'll probably find a way to hide the microwave less attractive bits of daily kitchen kit.

Onethingatatime23 · 07/11/2023 11:02

I also have a big food processor out on the worktop. I use it every day.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 07/11/2023 11:03

Some needs to invent a kettle toaster

DBinHK · 07/11/2023 11:03

I've never seen a kitchen with bare work surfaces. if it's an appliance I use most days I want it handy.

My neighbours are all in their forties with nice kitchens but they all have stuff on the worktops.

Bubblesgun · 07/11/2023 11:10

invest in a quooker tap. Best money I have spent and it s now a year and I couldnt livr without it.

i firmly believe about function, but you should never compromise beauty and aethetics. It absolutely can work together in response to a PP who talked about show kitchen. I m an architectural interior designer.
my kitchen and my client’s kitchens are highly functional for day to day life and all the drudgery of weekday cooking, yet I swear you would find them beautiful and no clutter on countertops. It is about planning. And making kitchens extra efficient.

a quooker tap or similar is the way to go.
you dont even need 2 taps as it is plumbed into the main so you can still do the wash up or other tasks with the tap water. But you drink chilled filtered water and have boiling water on demand, and if you wish you can add sparkling water.

it s an investment, but it isnt more expensive than boiling the kettle or using the hob. As for toasting under the grill, it is much more wxpensive than a toaster

I'll never understand the bizarre desire to have completely empty work surfaces. Unless you're really pushed for space and only have one counter top for food prep, who cares if your kettle or toaster is out?

I've got a kettle, toaster, air fryer, blender and stand mixer on my counters. My kitchen is for cooking in, not playing appliance Jenga every time I want a piece of sodding toast.

Get a toaster and kettle or tell your husband he is taking on sole responsibility for tea and toast going forward 🤣

Completely agree, I've got kettle, 4 slice toaster, bread bin, deep fat fryer, microwave and coffee machine. Kitchens look crap with nothing in them imo

JaxiiTaxii · 07/11/2023 11:14

Some people would rather have a clear work top.

Why is this "BIZARRE!!!" and "LOWER middle class!" Next will be "I bet they only use the oven to reheat NUGGETS!"

Different people like different things.

However OP, definitely get your kettle & toaster - you clearly would use them regularly & your DH isn't king of the kitchen

Unless it brings you joy to use a stovetop kettle (a pleasure which should be reserved solely for camping IMO) you need either a kettle or DH can fork out for a Quooker.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 07/11/2023 11:16

My food mixer is a thing of beauty and is out despite not being used very often. I also have a kettle, toaster, air fryer, microwave bread bin and retro cake tin. Oh and a jar full of kitchen utensils next to hob. It looks great (in my opinion anyway).

longtompot · 07/11/2023 11:18

I love our stove top kettle. It's much more efficient than our old electric one which we'd reboil I don't know how many times before using.
A toaster I feel is much more efficient than using a grill to do toast, plus you don't need to stand there waiting for the optimal moment your toast is done.

Forsakenalmosthuman · 07/11/2023 11:19

Is this Mumsnet? I am amazed you haven't had lots of pearl-clutching about feeding your family refined carbohydrates in the form of toast. faints

Haydenn · 07/11/2023 11:21

@JaxiiTaxii “Why is this "BIZARRE!!!" and "LOWER middle class!" Next will be "I bet they only use the oven to reheat NUGGETS!"

Dont need an oven, stick the nuggets in the toaster

Bubblesgun · 07/11/2023 11:22

I agree. My quooker tap is absolutely boiling. I burnt myself last week because i was holding my cup of tea and got bumped into by dear dog 😖

mayorofcasterbridge · 07/11/2023 11:25

Get a nice, posh kettle and toaster. I have de Longhi ones and I love them! I couldn't quite bring myself to fork out for Smeg but I might one day...

Onethingatatime23 · 07/11/2023 11:26

I used to do children's cookery parties and got to see lots of very posh kitchens. Quite enjoyed finding out how to use the fancy ovens. And also massively judging those with clearly unused ovens, especially when the owner of the oven could not indicate the basic features 😈

SisterhoodNotCisterhood · 07/11/2023 11:27

If my DH took away my tools to make food or drinks then he'd be making every single one. On a work call? I'd still hand him my mug and ask for a tea. He's in a rush to go
Eat out to work? Nope. He still needs to get the toast on for mine and the kid's breakfasts.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 07/11/2023 11:28

I am the opposite. I have as much as possible out so that I don't have to keep opening cupboards. It is a complete waste of time.

Obviously, I have to put some things away in cupboards because otherwise there would not be any space to cook, but all the other spaces are full of things I use every day.

SisterhoodNotCisterhood · 07/11/2023 11:28

In a rush to get to work.
I need to remember to re-read before posting.

Sorry am with your husband on this can not bear anything on the counter. agree with @Bubblesgun a kitchen can be aesthetically pleasing as well as functional. Get a boiling tap, they are excellent, currently in rental and really really miss mine, plus high limescale area and having to replace the kettle every couple of months as it goes bad no matter how much you clean it. Had boiling tap in same area for 5 years never replaced. Toaster goes in pantry press bread beside it , close pantry press when done. Everything has its place and can be quickly and easily tidied away when done

StrawberrySquash · 07/11/2023 11:38

If he's a no clutter person why didn't he plan an appliance garage? That hides stuff like a toaster behind a slidey door so access is easy but you can't see it the rest of the time.

EnterFunnyNameHere · 07/11/2023 11:42

VickyEadieofThigh · 07/11/2023 10:32

Bizarre, isn't it? I was at a friend's recently and stayed overnight. He and his wife have spent an astonishing amount on their kitchen and it includes one of these hot water tap thingies, so no kettle. He made me a cup of tea. The water wasn't boiling and so it was CRAP.

We have these things in our more posh city centre offices and it gets on my wick. So basically if you like coffee you can choose from X many types in the posh coffee machine, buy if you like tea you can't have anything resembling a decent cuppa because the water isn't hot enough!

There is an undercover revolution afoot though and cheap argos kettles are now showing up in the otherwise sleek and swanky kitchens...!

Horror of horrors a dog in the kitchen. How very unmumsnet

Our kettle's automatic switch off no longer works, but as it still boils water we don't consider that a good enough reason to bin it.

Ihateslugs · 07/11/2023 11:49

I like a tidy minimal kitchen but also need certain appliances close to hand! I’m in the process of having a new kitchen fitted, floor went down yesterday so now just need oven, hob and a few missing doors to be fitted and it will be finished!

I will have the usual appliances etc out on the worktops ( kettle, toaster, air fryer, Kenwood Chef, food processor as well as the bread bin and a jar of utensils.) I budgeted for the cost of a new kettle, toaster, bread bin, utensil jar and cover for the Kenwood Chef ( used regularly as I bake a lot and have needed a cover for a while), all in black to match the air fryer and chairs. My old kettle and toaster were over 15 years old so were looking rather tired! I do have over 13m of worktops though so still plenty of room.

I don’t like clutter though so having gone with as many deep drawers as would fit, I’m nominating a couple of the smaller one as junk drawers for all the c##p that gets dumped around!

I’m going for a cream and black theme so it will look kind of coordinated! But I will still put out a few decorative things on the window sills and in a couple of corners on the worktop which are not black - it is still my home!
