To ask if you have 4 British Grandparents?

ThornInMySide84 · 05/11/2023 10:11

In conversation with friends last night about the perks of still having an EU passport I discovered I was the only one with all 4 Grandparents being British.

DH also has 1 non British Grandparent and now when I really think about it so do a lot of my other friends. I would say the majority have an Irish Grandparent but also Spanish, Indian, Chinese, Polish, Maltese and Italian amongst my close friends.

I recall reading somewhere that 25% of British people could get an Irish passport so I guess I’m now wondering if having all 4 British Grandparents are not being entitled to any other nationality is actually quite uncommon?

4 British grandparents but 2 South African uncles and a Canadian Aunt
My mums family moved to SA after she was born so she grew up there and all her siblings were born there. My grandparents had residency but not citizenship.
My Aunt got Canadian citizenship when she moved there at 21 and worked for the government.
My great grandmother was a German Jew who moved to the U.K. to avoid persecution, family anglicised their name and she married a Brit.
Both DH & I have family scattered all around the world.

Yes. I had 4 British Grandparents and all my great grandparents were British too. I've got no chance of a second passport. DH had an Italian nan.

SittingOnIt2023 · 05/11/2023 12:06

I have 2 British grandparents, 1 Ukraine and 1 Spanish

My children have 3 British grandparents and 1 Irish

maximist · 05/11/2023 12:06

I've done my family tree as far back as I can manage (late 1700s) and haven't found anyone who wasn't English or Welsh.

SiblingFights · 05/11/2023 12:07

Two Irish, one of mixed British / Irish and one from Myanmar / Romania.

Both parents born overseas although one is a British citizen as born in exCommonwealth country.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 05/11/2023 12:07

No British grandparents. Very happy with my EU passport.

someonethatyoulovetoomuch · 05/11/2023 12:07

My whole family dating back generations are either English or Scottish, unless Scotland goes independent there’s only British passports in mine & my kids futures! My mum thinks she’s got some ancient Roman heritage (I have no idea why), but don’t think I’d get an Italian passport on that basis sadly.

TheSweetEndOfTheLollipop · 05/11/2023 12:08

No, I have 1 Swiss, and 3 British, though one of the British was born in N Ireland by chance, so I have an Irish passport. I didn't get my passport before my children were born so they can't have an Irish passport through me, sadly.

However, luckily DH did get his before they were born, so they can and will have one within the next year or two. He had 2 Irish GPs, 1 British (Scottish), 1 Italian. He's also getting an Italian passport for him and the children. I can only get one if I pass an Italian language exam as I'm not entitled to it through blood, only marriage.

I had 4 British grandparents but it didn't stop someone telling me "go home to israel, no one wants you here" when I forgot to take off my Star of David necklace when I used the tube last week.

That's awful, I'm really sorry someone said that to you.

TWETMIRF · 05/11/2023 12:08

3 Cornish, 1 English. My Grandad's family have been traced back to the 1730s in my home town

JANEY205 · 05/11/2023 12:08

Where I’m from (the East) it’s VERY common to have all 4 Grandparents be British. Only one friend of mine has 2 British Grandparents. Her children now have 3 British Grandparents tho. Literally everyone else I can think of has all 4 British Grandparents.

My children have 2 British Grandparents and 2 non-British and so have dual citizenship which I think is fantastic for them!

Jabbawocki · 05/11/2023 12:08

All 4 of mine were Brits - DP has 2 Brits and 2 Japanese and our baby has 1 Japanese. Japan don't recognise dual citizenship though unfortunately but hopefully that changes one day.

CustardySergeant · 05/11/2023 12:08

All four of my grandparents were Victorians, i.e. born in the 19th century, so are long dead. They were all British, but I believe my maternal grandmother had Irish ancestry (her maiden name was O'Connell) but don't know how far back. I have looked for records on Ancestry but found nothing so far.

EasternStandard · 05/11/2023 12:09

@Grapefruitsquash I’m so sorry to hear that, it’s too awful

NDisnormalinmyfamily · 05/11/2023 12:10

Just the one British grandparent, the rest were from different european countries

giraffecalf · 05/11/2023 12:13

No. My parents were immigrants to the UK. Three of my grandparents came to live in the UK too and I don't know if they ever got UK citizenship (my parents did). I never met the 4th grandparent who always lived abroad. My DH is also an immigrant to the UK and his parents live abroad, they have no connection to the UK except visiting us here as tourists. So my DCs have 2 British grandparents.

I live in London and the majority of families we know are from overseas, either the parents or grandparents..

boysmuminherts · 05/11/2023 12:14

Yes my grandparents were all British but I am married to an EU passport holder so our children have 2 passports.

CrunchyCarrot · 05/11/2023 12:16

2 British, 1 dual Aussie/British, 1 Aussie. I am dual nationality Aussie/British. If you were to go back another generation though, all would be British.

SpringViolet · 05/11/2023 12:17

All grandparents British.

NC with father or his family but I’m 44% Irish on his side according to Ancestry. Would that entitlement me to an Irish passport does anyone know? Could I rock up there with a print out of my DNA results😆?

Well, yes and no. Three were British and the other (who was Jewish and born in Egypt) must have several different nationalities at different points in his lifetime, including French, British and Australian.

As far as I can make out, I have no claim to French or Australian citizenship. However, in theory, I’m entitled to Israeli citizenship due to having a Jewish grandparent.

BertieBotts · 05/11/2023 12:19

I have a South African great grandmother on my Dad's side. On my mum's side I don't know but I think all my great grandparents were British.

Everyone else is English or Welsh.

There is a great-great-great-great grandfather who was Irish according to my dad's family tree.

Iwantthistobemyyear · 05/11/2023 12:20

one cypriot grandparent- deceased. need to get my grandmother to let his documents out of her precious clutches though, in order to get my EU passport...haven't tried yet, building up to it.

All British (technically English) on all lines back to gt gts and much further back than that on the ones I've gone further into.

I had hopes of a Scottish connection at one point but sadly not to be!
