To ask if you have 4 British Grandparents?

ThornInMySide84 · 05/11/2023 10:11

In conversation with friends last night about the perks of still having an EU passport I discovered I was the only one with all 4 Grandparents being British.

DH also has 1 non British Grandparent and now when I really think about it so do a lot of my other friends. I would say the majority have an Irish Grandparent but also Spanish, Indian, Chinese, Polish, Maltese and Italian amongst my close friends.

I recall reading somewhere that 25% of British people could get an Irish passport so I guess I’m now wondering if having all 4 British Grandparents are not being entitled to any other nationality is actually quite uncommon?

Well, yes and no. Three were British and the other (who was Jewish and born in Egypt) must have several different nationalities at different points in his lifetime, including French, British and Australian.

As far as I can make out, I have no claim to French or Australian citizenship. However, in theory, I’m entitled to Israeli citizenship due to having a Jewish grandparent.

I think you have to have a Jewish mother, and be an Israeli immigrant (or intend to be one) to get an Israeli passport

4 British grandparents, but only 4 of my
8 great grandparents were British

NotDavidTennant · 05/11/2023 15:34

All my grandparents and great-grandparents were born in either England or Scotland.

There is some Irish heritage, and a little bit of Indian, but you have to go several generations back to find it.

NotFastButFurious · 05/11/2023 15:36

1 Irish grandparent. Will be getting a passport when I renew!

Poppyseed14 · 05/11/2023 15:42

I'm technically British but born in Northern Ireland and I'm lucky to have both British and Irish passports. I never felt the need for the Irish one though until Brexit happened. DD only has Irish now but when she can have a 10 year one I suspect she will have both as well.

Thiswayorthatway · 05/11/2023 15:50

4 British, but 2 of them N Irish, as is my Mum, so myself and DC can have Irish passports (but not DH).

grottyb · 05/11/2023 15:51

I thought you could only get an irish passport through gps if your parent/s had one?

juice92 · 05/11/2023 15:55

1 non British Grandparent, all 4 of my Husband's Grandparents were British

Isseywith3witchycats · 05/11/2023 15:57

Isis1981uk · 05/11/2023 16:00

Yes! And my son (12) was the first of our family, on my mum's side, to have been born outside of Devon since the 1600s!

Nopenopenopenopenopenope · 05/11/2023 16:02

Mine were all British.

PerspiringElizabeth · 05/11/2023 16:02

Yep we’re as English as it gets annoyingly!

smilesup · 05/11/2023 16:06

I have 2 Czech, 2 English.
Most of my friends have a mix. I remember the day after Brexit we worked out in a big group of 8 of us that only 1 had 4 British GPs. We are in a multicultural part of the UK though.

LakieLady · 05/11/2023 16:08

Two of my grandparents (one on each side of the family) were born in Ireland but in the 19th century, so I think it would be hard to evidence.

I'm not sure if that would be enough for me to qualify for an EU passport anyway.

YellowChrysnthemum · 05/11/2023 16:10

No - non British parent, 3 non British grandparents here.

JustAMinutePleass · 05/11/2023 16:14

All 4 grandparents (as were great-grandparents and great-great grandparents up to 8 generations) are British - East Africa, India. I can’t get an Irish passport.

weegiemum · 05/11/2023 16:22

All of my grandparents were Scottish.

My dh had 2 Irish grandparents (born in N I before partition) and 2 German grandparents.

Our dc have 2 scottish, one NI and one German grandparent.

We've started the process to get Irish citizenship and passports for dh and the kids. I'm not eligible unless we live in NI for a while and that's not happening!

smilyfairy · 05/11/2023 16:22

All 4 of mine are Irish . As am I .But all were before the Irish free state came into being in the 1920s so were actually born into the United Kingdom of Britain and Ireland !
My kids have an English dad so have both Irish and Uk passports. I only have an Irish one .

SquashPenguin · 05/11/2023 16:25

All passed away now, but three were Cockney through and through, the other was Mancunian.

Wondering17 · 05/11/2023 16:30

No because only one of my parents is British.

Freesiabritney · 05/11/2023 16:31

I have 3 irish and 1 british, DH has 2 British, 1 Irish and 1 German. We live in an area with a large Irish heritage population. DD has 4 British GPs.

StaunchMomma · 05/11/2023 16:37

I do have an Irish Grandparent, yes.

As her parents died when she was very young and she was sent to England to be raised by an Aunt and Uncle, who also passed when she was relatively young, all documents relating to her parent's dates and place of birth have been lost and we can't find them on the Irish birth/death records (common name/no exact dates) so we remain Irish passport free, unfortunately.

FarEast · 05/11/2023 16:46

I have 4 British gps. And great-gps - we’re pretty much English and Welsh back about 600 years, apart from some Huguenot back in the 18th century.

Simplesimonsdog · 05/11/2023 16:56

Great grand parent I have just discovered was polish and Jewish (1880s), ended up in Hull then Leeds. All my grand parents were British born.

Summerbay23 · 05/11/2023 16:56

Mine are also dead but both myself and DH had all British grandparents.
