Does ANYONE have any idea what is wrong with my car?

When I accelerate, the Rev thing (yes I have no idea about cars) starts to move up and down quickly and work go above 20, even though the car drives as normal. It judders when he speedometer (?) is moving but then carries on fine. What is this? Is it going to be costly? I have a warranty but as a single parent I am so worried about this as I have no other form of transport in our area

*won’t go above 20 revs

If it's running fine apart from that it sounds like a misbehaving rev counter. What sort of car is it?

Hellocatshome · 05/11/2023 09:44

I used to have a car do that. Never did anything about it and drove it for years. BUT I am no expert and it might be really bad to do that.

HakunaMatiłda · 05/11/2023 09:44

Is this in every gear?

NeurodivergentBurnout · 05/11/2023 09:47

I had this and my clutch was knackered. Get it seen ASAP. My clutch failed completely and I ended up breaking down. Don’t ignore it. Mine broke down within a couple of drives after it starting doing this.

Fieldofbrokenpromises · 05/11/2023 09:52

The rev thing is called a tachometer, more commonly a rev counter, it shows how gas the engine is turning.
The “juddering” sounds as if the engine is hesitating- causing the counter to show that.
Even if you don’t use more than 20 (2000) revs, it’s not normal for the car not to be able to exceed that and it needs attention.
The cause could be a huge range of things from cheap to expensive depending on the car.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 05/11/2023 09:53

If it’s under warranty get it booked into the garage to get checked

PoodleJ · 05/11/2023 09:56

Is it a Zafira or Vauxhall? Mine used to have a protective mode that wouldn’t allow it to go above a certain rev point if it was low on oil. Check your oil levels.

LoveItaly · 05/11/2023 09:56

I had this and my clutch and flywheel needed replacing, the garage were surprised I could still drive it as it was in such a state. It was only 6 years old at the time.

EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness · 05/11/2023 10:00

No idea what it is, but If it's under warranty I'd get it seen to before that runs out.

hensgj · 05/11/2023 10:01

It’s a Skoda. Only 4 years old and had a service 3 months ago? Wouldn’t that have been picked up if it was the clutch or oil? Thanks here’s no light showing anything is wrong but I have to use it for work next week, it’s going to the garage on Friday. Garage didn’t think it was dangerous. Hate all this stress!

When I’ve had a clutch fail in the past, it would result in very high revs and not much forward progress as the clutch was slipping and not transmitting the power as it is supposed to. Inability of the engine to rev sounds more likely loss of power or limp mode referred to by a PP than clutch issue. OP hasn’t stated auto or manual in any case.

hensgj · 05/11/2023 10:26

It’s automatic

It’s automatic

Grin might have helped to say that in your post like.

gamerchick · 05/11/2023 10:31

When my car makes noises or behaves unexpected, it's better to book it in to get looked at. Forewarned of an expense and getting it sorted is better than breaking down and having to be towed.

Fieldofbrokenpromises · 05/11/2023 13:24

You need to check the oil more often than 3 months

Fieldofbrokenpromises · 05/11/2023 13:38

Unless the car does it automatically

mogsrus · 05/11/2023 13:59

Could be a misfire, but it does need checking

jimmyhill · 05/11/2023 14:17

Sounds like the clutch to me

In an automatic?

Really?

Ourshoddyhouse · 05/11/2023 14:53

They still have clutches ...

Ourshoddyhouse · 05/11/2023 14:56

Sorry posted too soon

Find an indie VAG specialist garage and ask them to check it over. Or a FB group / forum for your model and ask on there.
I've had a sticking throttle cable before which caused over revving. Engine judder could be a faulty MAF sensor.

Thebestwaytoscareatory · 05/11/2023 15:14

Could be any number of things but, if I was betting I'd say there's something up with a boost pipe / intake hose (assuming it has a turbo), either popped off at one the joins or split.

Mechanical issue like that won't necessarily trigger a warning light if all the sensors are operating within their parameters but will give those types of symptoms.

Xenis · 05/11/2023 15:17

It'll be your clutch. Pretty expensive jobs for an auto!

hensgj · 05/11/2023 15:26

@Xenis will that come under the warranty?
