See floor plan picture. We have two choices, A or B.
L is living room. PR/S is play room study. UR is utility room. D is dining room. K is kitchen. Black triangles are doors. Between living room and playroom/study is sliding doors. Between kitchen and dining room is archway.
Shaded bit is hallway. So the difference is the hallway and utility room.
Thoughts please you clever people?

B

I'd go with B.

UR is then completely separate and you don't have to walk through it from DR to PR/S. or the other way.

Also means you don't have to go the long way round, via other rooms, if you don't want to walk through or open doors to UR with noisy machines operating.

Loopzy · 04/11/2023 12:00

B

StripeyDeckchair · 04/11/2023 12:01

Definitely B
You don't want to walk through the utility room to get to other rooms
The longer hallway will make the house feel larger as you enter it too.

WaltzingWaters · 04/11/2023 12:01

I would say A. More usable space.

Climbingthehillfast · 04/11/2023 12:06

B - utility room needs to be closed off.

Sandysandwich · 04/11/2023 12:24

B, corridors are good- I lived in a flat where all the rooms interconnected and it was annoying and noisy

This. You won’t miss the extra cm in the UR but you will notice how much brighter & more open the hallway feels - and opening 2 doors to get into other rooms will annoy the heck out of you - as will people leaving the IR door open so they don’t have to open 2 doors.

DrunkenKoala · 04/11/2023 12:33

B

WilliamFaulkner · 04/11/2023 12:34

B without doubt for me. Good luck with it all.

Totaly · 04/11/2023 12:35

B but swap kitchen and dining round or open plan

SoupDragon · 04/11/2023 12:37

B. Although you might want to include a door into the utility room!

I don't think you get any more usable space with A as you have to leave that bit of floor free to walk through to the other two rooms.

I agree - don’t you want your utility off the kitchen if possible?

IgnoranceNotOk · 04/11/2023 12:47

Yep I agree - you want your UR attached to the kitchen.

IgnoranceNotOk · 04/11/2023 12:48

How would it be if you swapped the dining room and the kitchen?

Hotchocolatemousse · 04/11/2023 12:50

B

FallingAutumnLeaf · 04/11/2023 12:54

Actually, love the switching of kitchen and dining room.
You will also need some more doors. There are a lot of doors into the utility in my plan. Maybe no door from the hall?

ghostyslovesheets · 04/11/2023 13:03

Similar to my house - I don't have a utility room but I have a conservatory off where your playroom is - I have open plan kitchen/diner at the back and the front it the living room on one side study on the other.

So I'd be tempted to have the utility at the back of of the playroom and open the space out to a kitchen diner

Whatfreshhorrorstoday · 04/11/2023 13:07

Thanks all.
Kitchen is too new to mess with I’m afraid! But appreciate the ideas.
and yes a door Into the utility in b would be smart 😁it’ll prob be quite central
as need either side of the room for appliances and storage

Kitchen and dining really feel like one space with archway between them and decorated same

B

Best to have all rooms directly accessible from the hall

KNpepper · 04/11/2023 14:02

B.
For the utility room door I would have this as a sliding / pocket door to maximise usable space

BorisIsACuntWaffle · 04/11/2023 14:33

Just checking. Do you have an outside window into the hall? It will be v dark otherwise.
Definitely utility next to kitchen.
Do you have a door to garden from UR? Easier to take washing out

LovelyBoy2023 · 04/11/2023 14:43

B.
But not sure I would want a utility room that wasn't next to the kitchen. Rather have a downstairs cloakroom/loo

FloofCloud · 04/11/2023 15:15

B - our utility ends up with shoes and coats littered by kids and often dirty washing I want to hide away before it's cleaned. I'd shut it away so all bags and crap can be stored in shelves and you're not always seeing it moving between rooms
