TsarChasm · 11/03/2008 14:30

Yes it is a very British topic isn't it. I'm visualising us all queueing and discussing this.

mrsdannydyer · 11/03/2008 14:32

anyone fancy a cup of tea?

OrmIrian · 11/03/2008 14:34

Yes, it's terrible for the time of year. Still, mustn't grumble.

mrsdannydyer · 11/03/2008 16:28

oh lordy, its raining cats and dogs again ! is it raining where you are?

Kewcumber · 11/03/2008 16:31

oh yes the weather is sooo dreadful in the Uk isn;t it

No (serious) earthquakes, tornados, hurricanes, droughts, monsoons, snow, cold, heat... why its just dreadful how few people are killed or injured by our terrible weather.

The thing about the weather is that the wholecountry seems to grind to halt if there is more rain than usual, or more snow.

WinkyWinkola · 11/03/2008 19:51

I love the U.K.

But I don't like the way that there's nothing for young people to do from the age of 13+. I guess the outdoor activities aren't so accessible (imagine Australia) because of the weather . But ultimately, I think this problem reflects the British attitude towards young people. We don't actually care that much about them.

scottishmummy · 11/03/2008 19:56

the only place maybe probably wetter than glasgow is lanarkshire. you need a caonoe to get to the shops most days but still love it though

newgirl · 11/03/2008 19:57

13+ activities in my area - tennis, football, rugby, dry slope skiing, dancing, theatre, rock climbing, sailing, rowing, running club, venture scouts

running costs 12 quid a year, tennis 3 quid a session, swimming 1.80 a session

not all brit kids sit around watching telly all day y'know!

where do you live? i can't believe there isn't stacks to do?

mrsruffallo · 11/03/2008 20:00

But if they weren't bored they wouldn't form bands and make good music

francagoestohollywood · 11/03/2008 20:04

changing seasons??? the weather is always the same in the UK. With all due respect, great country etc etc, but the weather is crap IME/IMHO. sorry !!!!

breadgirl · 11/03/2008 20:06

I love it better from mid spring to late summer. It rains less and is not too hot for too long!!
Once a friend came over from the far east and said it was so lovely .. not the grey clouds and smog she was expecting at all!! She described our summer as dry, bright and sunny and like having air con outside!! She did come from a country that has very wet, very hot and humid summers.

expatinscotland · 11/03/2008 20:08

this is the wettest five months i've ever been through in my entire life.

even monsoons don't last so long!

francagoestohollywood · 11/03/2008 20:17

shhhhh Expat !

WinkyWinkola · 11/03/2008 20:20

I live in the S.E. I always see kids shuffling about, hanging about playgrounds, drinking, etc. Maybe it's just larking about.

Sounds amazing where you are, Newgirl.

Perhaps you're right - it's just a case of get off your backside and do something less boring instead.

gingerninja · 11/03/2008 20:23

As Billy Connolly says, 'there's no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes'

Oh no. John Lewis.

Desiderata · 11/03/2008 20:32

Console yourself with the fact that those countries with 'better' weather are usually sitting squarely in an earthquake zone, in the shadow of a volcano, in a dust-bowl, in the hurricane belt, or generally somewhere where the insects are fucking enormous.

Putting it all in perspective, it ain't that bad, is it?

edam · 11/03/2008 20:32

I like the weather. Just the words 'maritime climate' are lovely. It's nice to live in a country where the weather is changeable but mild enough that you'd have to be trying very hard - or be very unlucky - to be killed. And our weather inspired some wonderful person to devise the Shipping Forecast. Pure poetry.

gingerninja · 11/03/2008 20:32

OK I've got some pet annoyances but I'm sure someone will be able to tell me it's the same everywhere.

The media, sensationalist inbelievable rubbish.

The individual is king. No sense of community(ime)

Blame culture, no sense of responsibility.

I think I could go on all night [miserable fart emoticon]

francagoestohollywood · 11/03/2008 20:38

You won't convince. The UK is a fab country, it really is, but the weather... that wind !

francagoestohollywood · 11/03/2008 20:38

you won't convince me, obviously

francagoestohollywood · 11/03/2008 20:39

gingerninja, yes, it can be much worse somewhere else. Italy is crap. But sunny (totally aware Italy will become a desert in 10 yrs time emoticon)
