What do you do?

I’ve worked as a solicitor and it can be so stressful it takes over your life.

thinking career change here! Who’s happy in their jobs?!

Was a lecturer - high stress. Now work for a charity as an advisor. Life changing.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 03/11/2023 20:45

Ironically I'm a legal secretary and there's usually very little stress It's Private Client though so there are fewer deadlines (no pun intended!).

Palmasailor · 03/11/2023 20:48

Builder - no stress at all. I don’t work for anyone I don’t like.

RatOnArt · 03/11/2023 20:49

Police Officer
It was stressful when I used to work in an investigatory role. I went back to uniform and it’s brilliant. I work outdoors and it’s fairly active. I like the people I work with, it’s mainly men who I’ve known a long time. The Police are good with flexible working although I imagine shift work isn’t for everyone. I work PT

jusdepamplemousse · 03/11/2023 20:51

Could you move in house?

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 03/11/2023 21:05

I started in law but didn't qualify as a solicitor or barrister, I didn't want to but didn't know what I wanted so ended up a legal dept in insurance. It became incredibly stressful, more because of poor management than the role itself. I was lucky in that DHs work took off so I became SAHM and stayed for 10 years. I now work in childcare, Montessori and love it. I work 3 hours a day term time only. There are stressful moments during the shift but zero take home stress. Maybe I would feel differently if I worked full time. Obviously the money is very little due to my low hours so I'm dependent on DH more than I would like but it all works for us.

strawberryjeans · 03/11/2023 21:07

Librarian, love it

PepeParapluie · 03/11/2023 21:07

I’m a solicitor too. Hated my last firm, made me want to quit lane. Moved to a smaller firm with a much better culture and now find it way less stressful. Obviously there’s still pressure and stressful times but generally, it’s okay. You might be able to move within law and find a better role?

monpetitchou · 03/11/2023 21:12

Account manager at a marketing agency. Very little stress 95% of the time! Am at a v small agency so can also be a bit boring but I'm happy with that, on balance.

ladygindiva · 03/11/2023 21:13

Instrument/music teacher , one to one. Love it.

Drdoomish · 03/11/2023 21:15

Primary school teacher. Love my job and skip into work each day.

Troubador10 · 03/11/2023 21:21

Also a solicitor. I worked for a large international firm and my work life balance was shot, stressed all the time, working during weekends and holidays. I thought that was just the way it was, the trade off for the big salary and the prestige.

Then, one day, I decided enough was enough, I got a new job, same role, with a medium sized firm, and I haven’t looked back. Lower targets, nice culture, great colleagues, same quality and variety of work. I recently took a holiday and didn’t think about work once. Yes, there’s pressure and it can be stressful occasionally, but completely manageable and I’m much better supported. And the best but - I earn £10k more a year!

I’d seriously consider moving to a new
firm if I was you. Law is a great profession if you’re in the right place.

KylieKangaroo · 03/11/2023 21:22

Graphic Designer. Not well paid but definitely not stressed either 😅

Jessforless · 03/11/2023 21:22

Are any jobs not stressful?? I work in events. I’m stressed 24/7

Legendairy · 03/11/2023 21:23

I'm an accountant, public sector, can be stressful with tight deadlines (often) but we are treated so well and the leave/pension is good, as well as job security (as much as possible in any organisation). I love it though and it's a different stress I can imagine to being a solicitor due to the nature of the work and the fact I don't work for a private company.

Malbecmerlot · 03/11/2023 21:25

Forest school leader. Got to love being outside and helping children learn stuff but my heart is filled with joy every day

webuiltthiscityonrockandwheat · 03/11/2023 21:25

I work as a reception/front of house for a small museum and I love it. The people are fab, the customers are fab (mostly) and it's a stunning place geographically. It's seasonal as well so I get the winter off. Absolutely no take home stress and very little at work stress

popplego · 03/11/2023 21:25

I used to be a Solicitor until earlier this year (well, I'm still on the roll but not practising).

I now work for a University (almost completely from home) mentoring/coaching apprentice solicitors, best move I ever made! Really rewarding, low stress job.

SpringboksSocks · 03/11/2023 21:26

Child clinical psychologist … private sector (if I’d stayed in the NHS I would have had a breakdown by now). It’s rewarding, fun and interesting. The training is brutal though, and obviously there’s an emotional element that’s hard at times. I give my job 10/10. I probably wouldn’t recommend a career change to clinical psychology itself, but there are many shorter routes into child counselling/therapy.

Lavender14 · 03/11/2023 21:27

Work with high risk young people in a charity.

I know my job should be stressful and it can certainly be intense, but there's really good staff support, a great team who are really fun to work with and you get regular supervision and lots of great training etc. I think any job can be stressful and any job can be less stressful with the right support mechanisms in place.

Slav80 · 03/11/2023 21:28

Senior role in finance, some days are better than others but overall positive environment. You can change role/employer, but if you decide for yourself that a job is just a job, it gets easier and put things into perspective.

CatamaranViper · 03/11/2023 21:28

I'm an ops manager for a small tech company. I love it! Cos it's so small, we have our fingers in all the pies. Since I've been there I've taken on coding, HR, PM and loads of little random marketing tasks.

If I ever have to leave, it'll be to go to another small company.

Pickingmyselfup · 03/11/2023 21:29

Waitress in a golf club. Love it! I don't earn much though but I guess that's the pay off.

Some days are a bit stressful but I never have to take it home and the next day I can start over.

My home life though is another matter, stress levels through roof with challenging children, a million and one things to think about and a house that is never tidy. I go to work for a break and I'm not joking!!

clopper · 03/11/2023 21:30

Primary teacher. Love my job. I know I’m lucky to work in a chilled school with great colleagues.

KylieKangaroo · 03/11/2023 21:35

@Pickingmyselfup work is definitely a break here too!
