What do you do?

I’ve worked as a solicitor and it can be so stressful it takes over your life.

thinking career change here! Who’s happy in their jobs?!

OP posts:
Secondaryschoolstress · 03/11/2023 21:36

@Drdoomish your comment made me so happy. I know it’s tough being a teacher. But great to hear some of you are still happy.

I work for the NHS in HR. And I actually really enjoy my job and I’m not that stressed. Work with some lovely managers and I really enjoy helping people back to work or to over come issues in the work place

FLOWER1982 · 03/11/2023 21:39

I work for a local authority in commissioning and procurement. No stress, but pay isn’t that great.

LeggyLinda · 03/11/2023 21:44

I’m not so sure it is job specific.
I’ve worked in the same industry for many years - always high pressure, always high stress. Last year moved to another company (which was not my first choice and didn’t seem a fit - too casual ). But I love it.
I’m not earning the mega bucks I was. But they’re getting deal and so am I.
I suppose it comes down to whether you are happy to be a big fish in a small pond; or if you want to climb the corporate ladder.

LunaTheCat · 03/11/2023 21:54

GP - love it but so so stressful. .. love the long term relationships, making a difference but the paperwork is unreal, the lack ability to refer for services you know that people need.

AutumnBride · 03/11/2023 21:55

A very specialist public sector role, senior management. I don't get as stressed as I used to, it's just not worth it, I've had therapy and worked hard to get to this point.

Namechangedforspooky · 03/11/2023 21:57

Work in A&E. Often in charge but love my job. Definitely a lot less stressful than being at home looking after small children!

CopperLion · 03/11/2023 22:01

I’m a management consultant. I changed company, not job. Before the pandemic I had a job that totally dominated my life. Holidays were used for recovery and I was permanently on edge. I eventually quit due to burnout (caused by bullying, that’s another story, but I think toxic cultures facilitate a variety of unhealthy behaviours). Now I work for a firm that sets realistic targets, plans resources well, and hires good people who pull their weight. My role is the same on paper but dramatically different in practice. Definitely look around and see what else you can find OP. There will be a huge range of choices for you as a solicitor.

Viewfrommyhouse · 03/11/2023 22:04

Procurement admin for a food retail company. I love it. The pay is shite, but I do my days work and go home without a worry.

CaptainJackSparrow85 · 03/11/2023 22:05

Solidarity OP. I’m a solicitor too and last month I honestly thought the stress might kill me. This month it’s been more tolerable.

Darby3785 · 03/11/2023 22:08

I'm currently working as an assistant manager in the fitness sector. I'm not enjoying it and find I'm constantly stressed! Luckily for me it's a secondment and I go back to my stress free job in Summer 2024! 😅

LifeIsHardAlways · 03/11/2023 22:08

Work for local authority, basically no stress, but my current role only pays up-to 27.5k, so not a big earner.

tenterden · 03/11/2023 22:08

Legal advisor within a charity.

No work stress whatsoever.

twqsd456 · 03/11/2023 22:11

Solicitor too but just moved in-house. Not having to time record, and no targets is amazingly liberating!

@CaptainJackSparrow85 that's worrying. I would urge you to consider your options

TheCave · 03/11/2023 22:25

Also a solicitor being killed by stress. Permanent headache this week and genuinely thought I would vomit due to stress on Wednesday. Difficult to know what alternative options are - my role is very specialist and I'm not sure anyone else does what I do in the City (there are people doing my area of law but dabbling in it +alongside other areas). I love the area of law and the actual work (for the most part), but need less of it! Going in house I either wouldn't be able to specialise in this area or I'd get an equally stressful job (e.g. in house in a big tech company) and/or take a massive pay cut.

Also problematic when in a law firm full of transactional lawyers who are quieter than usual so everyone is being massively pushed to do business development, including people like me who are super busy. Trying to explain that I don't need more business as I can barely do the business I have results in people looking at me as if I am truly insane.

Merryoldgoat · 03/11/2023 22:29

Finance Manager - it’s responsible and busy but rarely very stressful, and it’s varied enough to keep me busy and interested and my colleagues are really nice.

I don’t earn fortunes but significantly above average.

Ylvamoon · 03/11/2023 23:44

I work in Procurement for our local hospital. I'm lucky, because I have a great team around me.
And although Brexit has caused a lot of problems and it can get stressful in the heat of the moment, overall, I don't really take any of the problems home.
It probably helps that I am non clinical and relatively new, so can't do big or final decisions, which suits me well!
Pay is good for the type of work v little responsibility.

Malarandras · 03/11/2023 23:45

Work doesn’t stress me. Not because of the job as plenty of colleagues are very stressed. I just decided work will not stress me out - hard life experiences taught me how low a priority work should be. So that’s what I did.

Fawbs89 · 03/11/2023 23:48

I'm a litigation executive so I understand!

smilesup · 03/11/2023 23:49

Advisor in a charity as well as running a very small charity for mental health locally. Love my jobs. Average pay hugely rewarding. Quite challengingly mentally but not stressful as respectful atmosphere and doing something making the world better rather than my old job of just making money and selling shite.

Fawbs89 · 03/11/2023 23:50

This sounds like a dream!

I work as a reception/front of house for a small museum and I love it. The people are fab, the customers are fab (mostly) and it's a stunning place geographically. It's seasonal as well so I get the winter off. Absolutely no take home stress and very little at work stress

Oh gosh I thought you were going to be one of my colleagues until you said it's seasonal! 🙈😁

I do the same job in a stunning manor house except we're open all year round.

It's the best job I've ever had and the visitors, staff and volunteers are all so lovely.

ToastedTossers · 03/11/2023 23:52

Audio typist for NHS. Money great, good holidays and no stress whatsoever. I get looked down on by colleagues in higher bands but to be honest I wouldn’t have it any other way.

SarahAndQuack · 03/11/2023 23:53

I love my job. I work in a plant nursery. I trained as an academic and I loved the research and the teaching, but the rest of it was both stressful and extremely difficult to manage around family life. One of the best things about my job is that I'm five minutes away from home/my daughter's school, and I can drop everything to go pick her up if she's sick. If I'm doing something suitable, and she feels like it, I can take her into work - and she learns about plants, or plays with the dogs who belong at the nursery, or goes exploring.

pineapple7peach · 03/11/2023 23:55

I work in admin at a university. We work flexi hours and we’re not expected to take our work home with us. Good pension, staff counselling, can’t really complain!
