Is it on? How long do you have it on, and what temperature?

I've turned mine on to come on a timer for 2.5 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the evening at 18c. Maybe that's a lot but I'm home most of the day and I feel the cold, plus the morning heating keeps the house warm most of the day. Last year I had it on for only a few hours at 15c and it was miserable. I have a nice amount of credit in the energy account so I'll see how November goes.

If I'm in I'll put it on to rise to 20, if I'm in bed then it gets turned down to 18.

ChokeToDeathOnThreePoundsOfMeat · 03/11/2023 19:09

It's not on yet. We still have our bedroom windows open...

Newnametoavoidtrouble · 03/11/2023 19:10

Older couple so keep it 22/23 for them, Bald gentleman always wears a hat indoors even to bed.
Want them to move around, not keep still and huddled in rugs then risk tripping over blankets and shawls.

JTtheee · 03/11/2023 19:12

we used to have this temp too but last year dropped to 17.5 at night and 19.5 in the day. Honestly made very little different to the warmth of the house but a lot to the cost. I was one for wackiness it up to 25 when I got cold pre this chaos. You’d be surprised what a difference that 1 degree makes in cost. It was about a £2.50 a day for us!

LeonBlack · 03/11/2023 19:14

We haven’t put it on yet.

Our wood burner is alight in the evenings and that keeps it toasty downstairs. We don’t like the heating on in bedrooms anyway.

Troubledwords · 03/11/2023 19:15

sanityisamyth · 03/11/2023 08:27

Not on. Didn't go on once last year. Middle floor flat with only electric heaters. No wood burner or other source of heat. Bought Oodies and have thick duvets.

Same for me, except top floor flat. Didn't go on last year and won't be going on this year. Got a heated airer to help dry clothes, but that's as much heat as I'll be putting on.

StillWantingADog · 03/11/2023 19:17

We have an air source heat pump.
it’s set to 20 all day but 17 between midnight and 7am.
Could go higher if we wanted.
it’s not actually running the whole time but the temperature is constant.

I think apartments are much better than houses that way. Ones that are sandwiched top and bottom. We never needed heating in those.

Tarantella6 · 03/11/2023 19:25

We never turn ours off, it is set to 21° for a few hours in the morning and something like 6-10pm in the evening. In summer it obviously doesn't come on much but there is no ceremonial turning off the heating day!

Whalewatchers · 03/11/2023 19:39

It's not too cold yet, so half hour in the morning and same in the evening to give a bit of heat. I think the lowest the thermostat has been is 17 in the kitchen, 18 in the sitting room, before the heating goes on in the morning

Have you had any bills yet to estimate what it'll cost over winter?

diamondpony80 · 03/11/2023 19:43

18 would be too cold for me. I keep my temperature at 20 and luckily it hasn't gone below that too often yet.

CormorantStrikesBack · 03/11/2023 19:46

Just turned it up from 18 to 19 today. Comes on for a bit over an hour in the morning and 3 hours in the evening.

id be just about ok at 18 but the house gets damp at that temp so have to turn it up.

margotrose · 03/11/2023 19:47

Ours is off most of the day, but set to 18.5 for an hour before work and in the evenings so we can shower. Our bathroom is in an extension and is badly insulated so the heating needs to be on to make it bearable.

It's been off for six hours and it's currently 18.3 in here.

Greybluewhite · 03/11/2023 19:48

I’m freezing any lower than 20, I’ve had it on loads!

My house is old and draughty plus we have a baby and a toddler. I would rather be skint than cold.

RM2013 · 03/11/2023 19:48

We haven’t had ours on yet. We moved in Jan from a freezing cold link detached 1970’s house with big draughty windows to a more modern 3 storey house which is terraced (we are middle one in row of 3).
it’s amazingly well insulated and we really benefit from being in the middle.
it was freezing when we moved and only ever needed the heating on for short periods.
we had a new boiler and got a hive this summer so hoping it’s more economical than the old system.

thermostat says it’s 18.7 degrees and will come on if goes below 16 but it feels warm in here

in general we set the heating to come on for an hour in the morning and a couple of hours in the evening and just boost it if we need it warmer or if someone’s home during the day

LouiseD2018 · 03/11/2023 19:50

18 over night for baby though before hand i could tolerate drop to 16 with a good duvet.

20 during the day though it only tends to kick in early morning and evenings. I mostly work from home, pets and a baby. The odd occasion I'm out all day it'll stay at 18.
I still feel the odd chill so quite often have a blanket, or chunky cardigan on.

Its always a shock to the system visiting family in Wales who keep temp at 17/18 daily 😅

Noisynoisyconservatoryroof · 03/11/2023 19:50

I got adult DD who wfh and was worried about their energy bills and very miserable last winter a Lakeland Dreamland electric throw. She’s been telling me it’s the best thing EVER! And very reasonable to run.

StillWantingADog · 03/11/2023 19:51

Whalewatchers · 03/11/2023 19:40

It’s early days as it was only installed in april but it cost less in October than it did in October last year (was milder to be fair). Over the course of the year we expect it to be roughly equal. But no up and downs of temperature.

Mumaway · 03/11/2023 19:55

1hr in the am, 4.5 in pm, thermostat at 15.5 but house pretty well insulated semi so doesn't feel cold except one child's bedroom that the radiator just won't warm up.

YouJustDoYou · 03/11/2023 19:59

An hour and a half before the kids wake up, then 5-8 in the evenings. When it's deadly freezing, we light the fire and all sleep in the lounge in front of it.

sparkedsparkle · 03/11/2023 20:00

Put my smart heater on downstairs in the evening on 19 for about an hour. Then put smart heater on in bedroom for an hour or two. But I have my hot water bottle at this time too. Probably going to buy an electric blanket, haven't used the central heating as of yet

Dibbydoos · 03/11/2023 20:05

@sadsufferer2023 snap! I don't think it's excessive, but my kids p me off when they leave the back door open so the dogs can go in the garden at any time - lazy sods don't want to take time off gaming to let them out!

NorthernSarcasticandDownrightFantastic · 03/11/2023 20:07

Upstairs set to 20.5c, downstairs to 20c, both go down to 19c 11pm-6am.

I work too hard to be cold at home. I've lived in cold houses, I've had ice in the inside of windows, and it's miserable.

I want to be able to be comfortable in a tshirt and shorts if I want to be. My door is open to any friend who wants to come stay warm here too, or have a hot bath or shower or food or a brew. I've had nothing, and I'm very grateful for not being in that situation anymore, so will help others if I can. Also, I'm tight and it's cheaper.

lolabear1243 · 03/11/2023 20:07

Tend to start using the log burner first and a couple of electric heaters in rooms that can go on if needed.. When it gets colder out I will have heating once in the morning and again the evening for an hour or two each time but don't think we have ever had a reliable thermostat so don't bother with that! Still very mild where I am though, still seeing wasps and butterflies in the garden!
