Aldi self checkout- ‘I don’t work here so I’m not going to serve myself’.

Woman heard complaining in Aldi because there was a lack of manned checkouts. How do you think they keep their prices so low? I know there is a small percentage of people that struggle to use self checkouts but I think her attitude was crap.

I think people are entitled to hold whatever views they like about self checkout - I use them sometimes, if it's an option, but also go through the conventional tills too.

W0tnow · 02/11/2023 15:25

Self service checkout has changed my life for the better.

Itsnotchristmasyet · 02/11/2023 15:26

I can’t stand rude people and it’s always aimed at retail staff, cleaners or waitresses, those that they obviously think are beneath them.

I saw someone screaming at a shop assistant because there were 2 people in front of her at the till and she doesn’t want to queue so they need to open another for her.

Q2C4 · 02/11/2023 15:26

I dislike that attitude. Does she refuse to eat at restaurant buffets due to having to serve herself? Perhaps she should bring her butler or house keeper with her next time to do it for her 🤣

Dacadactyl · 02/11/2023 15:27

Well she must be impatient cos aldi are brilliant at opening checkouts the second there's any sort of queue round here.

Quisquam · 02/11/2023 15:28

IMO, what should concern us more, is what is going to happen to all those thousands of people, employed in retail, hospitality, etc, who won’t have a job, due to self service checkouts, restaurant apps, etc? The working population is still going to have to support them on benefits, so how cheap exactly are the goods in shops? Likewise, when all those people have no spare money on benefits, how are they going to afford the products or services made by the working population? The workers income will go down too?

Cyclebabble · 02/11/2023 15:36

Ok then you join the longer queue for a peopled checkout- and potentially make it even longer for someone who genuinely could not use the self service facility.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 02/11/2023 15:38

it’s horses for courses. If you have a sandwich and a drink, hurrah for the self service fast checkout. If you have a full trolley…..well, it’s verging on the impossible.

Goodness knows what’s going to happen around Christmas, though, when the shops are full, many people are buying alcohol so need the till ‘assistant’ to validate the purchase, peoples tempers get frayed because of stress….and the extra time it takes to scan a basket at the unmanned tills is going to lead to enormous queues. Most of the supermarkets hired extra staff for Christmas, now they won’t.

But they can take a penny off a pack of biscuits.

aSofaNearYou · 02/11/2023 15:38

It's not just Aldi doing this, though, there is a push for it everywhere, which is annoying people.

Ponoka7 · 02/11/2023 15:38

They had low prices before self serve. Profits won't fall because there's two more people employed on each shift. You need to look at the bigger picture as a pp said. We don't need a cut in just bs so profits go even higher. We are in a COL crisis, big businesses aren't.

Mazuslongtoenail · 02/11/2023 15:40

If you don’t want to use self checkout there should be a till open but you should accept that it takes longer and you’ll probably have to queue for a while.

myopinionmatters · 02/11/2023 15:41

She's unhappy with her life so taking it out on others. What a ridiculous thing to be mad about

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 02/11/2023 15:43

Fine, let people lose their jobs then.

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 02/11/2023 15:43

I always use self service at Asda as they never open more checkouts if there’s a queue and it can take half hour to get through a manned checkout.

Aldi I can’t use the self service as I usually do a big shop and the bagging area is tiny! I end up stacking items and doing a balancing act to try get them all on after scanning so they register the weight. They are good at opening more manned checkouts though so I always use manned.

Kitcaterpillar · 02/11/2023 15:46

It's rude to be rude, but it can also be massively frustrating. My local Sainsbury's only has the small self-checkouts and then only has one checkout open on weekdays so if you're doing the Big Shop, you're cursed to queue for 15 minutes or play a ridiculous game of shopping Jenga.

Superbroom · 02/11/2023 15:50

Shes right, we’re not paid to serve ourselves and it’s taking jobs away from retail workers.

XenoBitch · 02/11/2023 15:52

I always use the self checkouts when available. Self scan is even better.

Saying that, I have never seen them in Aldi.

pigsDOfly · 02/11/2023 15:53

It's not just Aldi doing this.

I shop at Tesco and recently it's been almost impossible to find a manned till.

I was in there the other day during a busy time of day and there were about three manned tills and huge queues at the self service checkouts.

I don't mind using self service if I've got a couple of bits and it's not busy but with a full shop it's laborious and difficult for someone like me who isn't sure exactly what they're doing.

The staff at our Tesco have always been lovely and very helpful but what's happening to them now? I assume they're losing their jobs.

YourDiscoNeedsYou · 02/11/2023 15:53

I know a few people who don’t like to use self service (including myself often) because the thought of completely automated supermarket checkouts is unpleasant. I don’t want a machine to do a human out of a job, especially when there are still people who prefer the human interaction.

SuperSange · 02/11/2023 15:54

My local Aldi doesn't have any self checkouts.

SisterMichaelsHabit · 02/11/2023 15:55

Aldi have self checkouts now? Well they were late to that party. I was manning the self checkouts in Asda 9 years ago and they were fairly old hat already by then.

LakeTiticaca · 02/11/2023 15:56

I love self scan for a small shop and scan and shop for a larger shop. Bugger hanging about for ages in a queue on a matter of principle.
Some people just like to complain.
Get a life, I say

QueSyrahSyrah · 02/11/2023 15:56

What's WH Smith in the airport's excuse then? Because everything there is 3 x the price and still I have to ring it through myself.

Pass me a mop and I'll have a whizz round the floor too, while I'm here and seemingly part of the payroll.

SisterMichaelsHabit · 02/11/2023 15:56

Is this the first time you've been shopping, OP?

rocknrollaa · 02/11/2023 15:57

I agree that was a rude comment, however, budget supermarkets like Aldi and Lidl existed long before self checkouts. That is not how they keep their prices low.
