We had some tenants. They never missed the rent but moved elderly dad and dog in without asking. It was covid so no problems.

Anyway they left, dad went into a home. The dog they cared for died.

They did a flit no rent owing but no forwarding address. We decided to sell but the post kept coming. I'd collect but there was a strange name so opened. It was bank statements to the ex tenant marked vets Bill sometimes twice a month around £900 a month.

We know for a fact that the dog is dead. So the elderly man in the nursing home is he being conned?

Should I do something about this or just let it go because the daughter would receive the money when he dies anyway.

Yes I do.

I've a pile more mail here that I collected, haven't opened but again have written on the envelope not known

If you're genuinely concerned, and not just looking to get back at tenants that cost you money, then report it.

Financial abuse of the elderly is a thing. You can report it to the adult social care team and they can look into it.

Why are you collecting and opening mail addressed to old tenants from a property you've sold, opening it and getting stressed they are conning their elderly dad?

It only sold today. I've been collecting letters since may. Are you worried about something?

It's bine of your bloody business, OP.
If it isn't illegal to open post, it is very intrusive and morally wrong.

Nchanged89 · 01/11/2023 14:17

Your involvement in previous tenants financial arrangements with a dead dog and an old man is the only thing that is worrying.

So it's morally right to con your dad then and have debt collectors chasing him?

How widespread does skimming the elderly have to be to concern you.

I honestly wonder how many are doing it now

Boomboom22 · 01/11/2023 14:25

More like the vet conning them if it's being paid.

Pinkitydrinkity0 · 01/11/2023 14:27

It’s really none of your business. Just mark the post “Not at this address - return to sender” and be done with it.

justasking111 · 01/11/2023 14:28

63% think I'm wrong to be concerned. God help the elderly then in today's society.

I'd do as the previous poster suggested and report it to the social care team as potential elder abuse... Do they say that all it takes for evil to thrive is for a good man to do nothing?

Londontown12 · 01/11/2023 14:30

I would go to the police it’s fraud and theft !! That poor old man ! Do the right thing and report !

Nchanged89 · 01/11/2023 14:30

Its none of your business, the house is sold so you won't be getting more post in their names, you have no proof of anything.
Move on with your life.

Ella31 · 01/11/2023 14:31

Any chance it's paying off old vet bills or they got a new dog. This sounds ridiculous

If u report to police they will find where they alll are !!

TryAgainWithFeeling · 01/11/2023 14:33

But you don’t actually know anything OP? They could have another animal, the transactions could be approved. I can’t really see that there’s anything to do here but keep returning the mail.

It's mostly exactly the same amount £200 or £250. Neighbours say the dog died months ago.

New dog?

Nchanged89 · 01/11/2023 14:36

Whilst you are reporting the previous tenants you better also report the company you paid 3.8k to evict the tenants considering that they did a flit.

justasking111 · 01/11/2023 14:37

jammyhand · 01/11/2023 14:34

New dog?

He's in a home, wheelchair bound. So I wouldn't think so. Daughter withdrew via mobile £250 30 August. £,300 1 September.

So report it to adult care at that council

Mumofoneandone · 01/11/2023 14:41

Maybe worth mentioning to bank re possible fraud or police?
Not great to open others post but if you are still getting masses and trying to remove an issue for your buyers......

Edited

They stayed untill the very last day the courts said that they could. Then flit

I'm a bit confused (doesn't take much).

Is the unknown name being assumed to be the elderly dad now in a care home while the daughter who put him there is the ex tenant who did a flit? Are we saying that the vet bills were charged to the elderly dad's account and are still ongoing even though the dog is dead?

If I've understood correctly, and the bills are still ongoing it does sound dodgy but truth is you have no idea. If the now deceased dog was dad's and the vet bills are instalments for a much larger balance owing, then all could be legit. Do the bank statements show the money going to a vet or is it just a money transfer to a different account with vet bill as the reference. If the former, probably legit. If the latter, maybe not.

I guess the only thing you could do if you are really concerned is speak to the safeguarding lead at the nursing home the elderly man has been moved to and mention your concerns.

In the subject of opening post, the advice is normally to mark it "not at this address. Return to sender". The law says:

"A person commits an offence if, intending to act to a person's detriment and without reasonable excuse, he opens a postal packet which he knows or reasonably suspects has been incorrectly delivered to him."
