Last night DH and I had booked onto a ghost hunt at a “haunted castle”. It was just a bit of Halloween fun. I’m an open minded skeptic in that I want it all to be real but I really struggle to believe it. That being said I would never take the piss or insult anyone’s beliefs, I went with the intention on taking it seriously.

Anyway the whole thing started off on the wrong foot when the guide started talking about a ghost that - due to me being a history geek - I knew never existed in real life. Still I didn’t say anything and just went along with it but I was getting more skeptical by the minute. He turned off all the lights in the dungeon so we’re all stood in pitch black darkness whilst he called out to these random “historical figures”. My back was hurting, I was so cold and I was getting restless stood in one place for so long. Should also add that I have ADHD so standing still for long periods of time is difficult but I managed to stand there for an hour with only internal struggles.

Next bit is where I caved. We had to form a circle and everyone had to hold hands whilst one person was the “receiver” stood in the middle. Half hour of stood in this position and one bloke was quietly complaining (whispering) to his wife that his legs were hurting, she kept telling him to be quiet - the whispering went back and forth until suddenly he shook off the hands at either side of him and said loudly “I’m sorry I can’t stand like this any longer” but it was so dramatic I started laughing - then I couldn’t stop laughing - everything became funny - the image of DH stood there holding hands with a random bloke - the person in the centre of the circle rocking back and forth as she’s “pushed around by a spirit”, I remembered someone tripping up earlier in the dungeon and everyone thought a ghost had pushed her … even after she said she’d tripped up … the thought of a big group of adults stood in pitch black darkness in the middle of a freezing cold castle trying to talk to Alistair Crowley …. I tried to stop laughing and I couldn’t. I tried to disguise it as coughing and DH whispered to me that it all seemed a bit devil worshipy … that set me off again. To save face I let go of both hands either side of me and apologised saying I needed to go out and get some fresh air, the guide then said “don’t break the circle!” And everyone looked terrified which made me laugh further and I ended up just walking out leaving DH stood there not knowing whether to stay or follow.

I know IWBU to go “ghost hunting” in the first place but WIBU to leave in the way that I did? I feel so guilty and I tried so hard to stop laughing but the more.i tried the worse it got. DH says it was obvious that I was laughing. I do suffer with nervous laughter so I think this is what it turned into.

WIBU to have walked out? Was this worse than stood there trying not to laugh??

YANBU, it sounds ridiculous and I'd have most likely done similar.

However I wouldn't book onto something like that again knowing you laugh nervously easily, when there's people who want to take it seriously. It would spoil it a bit for them.

yanbu to leave.
Yabu to leave noisily, disturbing the other people who may have been enjoying the evening.

This. Sounds so rude.

horseyhorsey17 · 01/11/2023 12:37

I had my bottom pinched by a 'ghost' at a similar seance I did at Oxford Castle. I definitely did have my bottom pinched but I wasn't convinced it was by a ghost!

Alistair Crowley is real so who was the made-up historical figure?

I am an enormous fan of stifling laughter in inappropriate places. My DCs and I were in a very very quiet church in Venice earlier this year and they had been so wonderfully respectful when they came upon a painting.
A painting of Jesus and Mary where Jesus just has that look of a middle aged man painted as a young child. Anyway, my oldest child just looked at me with the wide eyed look of “I have to look away otherwise I will laugh and yet I desperately want to join you in the hilarity of this painting”. The three of us just silently did everything we could to maintain our dignity. It almost hurt.

Then we walked into the main area and there was a small baby Jesus and his hands were like this 🤌 and my son just turned to me and whispered “Jesus has Italian hands”

And we had to leave pronto.

😂

I have laughed too as I don't believe in this shit. But I wouldn't have gone because I know I do this and not respect others beliefs. Also I'm a bit skeptical that you knew these historical figures didn't exist, do you know all history ever?!

So you weren't being unreasonable to leave. But it was a bit if twatty thing to do to go in the first place. Especially when you know you have nervous laughter. A bit more self awareness would probably do you good in future.

This x100

I don't believe in god but i don't attend church services snickering and laughing at the silly antics of the priests.

Tamrastarr · 01/11/2023 12:43

I wouldn't worry about it. I've gone to "psychic medium" shows purely for entertainment! You will find that a lot of people are there to take the piss and try and wind up the "medium". At one, the medium was talking about photos' the audience had brought and trying to determine how the person in them died, when the owner of the pic confirmed they were alive and well.

Alistair Crowley was indeed real, but why he’d be with us last night I really don’t know

Might have been nowt good on the telly?

TheFireflies · 01/11/2023 12:44

I’m like you OP, a sceptic but one who enjoys the entertainment value of spooky stories and have been on a few ghost hunts. None were like the one you describe! One was led by a team of sceptics, which was the best one IMO, but there were never any Derek Acorah style theatrics, luckily. I would have done the same as you but I don’t think I’d have lasted as long!

CesareBorgia · 01/11/2023 13:04

Those who took it seriously would probably issue your laughter was hysteria.

No I left, was more interested in seeing who had been evicted from Big Brother, plus my back was absolutely killing me.

Daisy199 · 01/11/2023 13:06

Omg you have just had me and my DH in stitches 😂😂😂 thank you!…

and no YWNNU. Howling

AlexandriasWindmill · 01/11/2023 13:06

Of course YABU. It was their big night out and you spoiled it. People on a ghost hunt are soft targets. It's the equivalent of pushing over a toddler.

Maatandosiris · 01/11/2023 13:08

Soubriquet · 01/11/2023 10:53

Alastair Crowley… 2 characters from Supernatural.

Would have laughed there and then

You do know aleister Crowley was a real person don’t you????

Maatandosiris · 01/11/2023 13:11

Tbh you sound extremely rude and lacking self awareness. If it’s not your thing don’t go.

so who was the made up figure?

stayflufft · 01/11/2023 13:12

Humpfree · 01/11/2023 11:08

This really made me laugh 😂 Surely he’d be whooping it up in the afterlife with loads of blasphemous naked ladies, off his chops on some psychedelic substance.

namechangnancy · 01/11/2023 13:18

Ghost hunting is not my thing at all. Sounds horrific but I suppose that's why I have never gone myself

But tbh op you ruined it for others by making it known you were so above it all by giggling and not leaving. You managed to act right when you were being showed the historical parts.

You had a choice, and you chose to make others feel small by making your self look clever

Intelligenthair · 01/11/2023 13:22

It was clearly a load of bollocks, but I think you were unreasonable to spoil it for people who had paid money and wanted to take it seriously.

jammyhand · 01/11/2023 13:24

God I wish I'd been there, it sounds hilarious. Eons ago my friend was an aspiring actor hired to lead one of these. She had to work on her straight face too

I'm surprised that in this climate of health and safety and inclusivity that it was not made clear how long you would need to stand still for. FWIW, I think most people would struggle to stand still in the dark for an hour, not just people with ADHD.

Last night of all nights, he would probably have quite a lot of optionally, socially.

HelloItsMeHowAreYou · 01/11/2023 13:28

suddenly he shook off the hands at either side of him and said loudly “I’m sorry I can’t stand like this any longer”

Did he leave? I would have not been able to control myself from giggling at this either

Well I’m not sure she made herself look clever at all. It’s clear she originally though Crowley was a made up character (despite being a “history buff”) if it wasn’t Crowley I’d be interested in whole she was referring to.

Crowley is also considered a prophet in the religion of Thelema so if any of the other guests were Thelemites she was probably disrespectful of their religion.

id be interested to know where this was and who the rest of the group were.

Be interested to know if the OP has any unexplained experiences over the next few weeks😂

ScrambledSmegs · 01/11/2023 13:33

I love a good ghost tour. This doesn't sound like it was a good one!

Also standing in a cold damp basement dungeon for an ill-defined length of time, trying to summon spirits like a budget Derek Acorah with no toilets nearby sounds like a recipe for disaster, considering the average age of every ghost tour I've ever been on.

I'm only surprised you lasted as long as you did.

LakeTiticaca · 01/11/2023 13:45

I have form for laughing inappropriately at things that are meant to be deadly serious so I doubt I would have lasted long in this scenario 😅 😂 🤣
