Made a twat of myself last night, WIBU to leave?

Last night DH and I had booked onto a ghost hunt at a “haunted castle”. It was just a bit of Halloween fun. I’m an open minded skeptic in that I want it all to be real but I really struggle to believe it. That being said I would never take the piss or insult anyone’s beliefs, I went with the intention on taking it seriously.

Anyway the whole thing started off on the wrong foot when the guide started talking about a ghost that - due to me being a history geek - I knew never existed in real life. Still I didn’t say anything and just went along with it but I was getting more skeptical by the minute. He turned off all the lights in the dungeon so we’re all stood in pitch black darkness whilst he called out to these random “historical figures”. My back was hurting, I was so cold and I was getting restless stood in one place for so long. Should also add that I have ADHD so standing still for long periods of time is difficult but I managed to stand there for an hour with only internal struggles.

Next bit is where I caved. We had to form a circle and everyone had to hold hands whilst one person was the “receiver” stood in the middle. Half hour of stood in this position and one bloke was quietly complaining (whispering) to his wife that his legs were hurting, she kept telling him to be quiet - the whispering went back and forth until suddenly he shook off the hands at either side of him and said loudly “I’m sorry I can’t stand like this any longer” but it was so dramatic I started laughing - then I couldn’t stop laughing - everything became funny - the image of DH stood there holding hands with a random bloke - the person in the centre of the circle rocking back and forth as she’s “pushed around by a spirit”, I remembered someone tripping up earlier in the dungeon and everyone thought a ghost had pushed her … even after she said she’d tripped up … the thought of a big group of adults stood in pitch black darkness in the middle of a freezing cold castle trying to talk to Alistair Crowley …. I tried to stop laughing and I couldn’t. I tried to disguise it as coughing and DH whispered to me that it all seemed a bit devil worshipy … that set me off again. To save face I let go of both hands either side of me and apologised saying I needed to go out and get some fresh air, the guide then said “don’t break the circle!” And everyone looked terrified which made me laugh further and I ended up just walking out leaving DH stood there not knowing whether to stay or follow.

I know IWBU to go “ghost hunting” in the first place but WIBU to leave in the way that I did? I feel so guilty and I tried so hard to stop laughing but the more.i tried the worse it got. DH says it was obvious that I was laughing. I do suffer with nervous laughter so I think this is what it turned into.

WIBU to have walked out? Was this worse than stood there trying not to laugh??

Just tell them all you were possessed by the spirits 😂😂😂😂

ThreeRingCircus · 01/11/2023 11:24

You lasted longer than I would have!

I don't blame you for leaving, you did the right thing. If some people there were enjoying it then the most polite thing you could have done is exactly what you did...... excused yourself once you were laughing a lot and left them to get on with it.

I agree you should feed back about them being clear that the event will involve standing for long periods of time so other people are aware when booking.

Fallenangelofthenorth · 01/11/2023 11:22

Sounds like you did them all a favour to be honest. Only 2 possible outcomes - everyone gets increasingly bored, cold, tired and in pain and nothing at all happens, or even worse - they ARE successful and conjure up the ghost of an evil satanist. Both options sound pretty shit.

Or they THINK they’ve conjured up the ghost of an evil satanist and become mentally ill because of it.

Humpfree · 01/11/2023 11:25

Oh a few people were apparently - 6 people walked out to be sick after being so badly attacked by spirits.

One woman suddenly said “I need to leave” in a robotic voice and started heading slowly to the door … the guide said “are you ok?” And she didn’t respond … just carried on walking slowly to the door. He then said “oh dear, it’s got hold of her” … I was glad it was dark at this point because I had tears rolling down my face as I tried to pull myself together.

Sounds shit, I don't think you did anything wrong.

I went to one at a stately home which was (intentionally) hilarious - things like skeletons dropping down the wall after the story was told. I really had a good laugh. There has to be a good deal of humour with it- the Edinburgh vaults, York and London tours/ghost walks are really funny as well as creepy. Someone being po-faced about it would crack me up too.

Manadou · 01/11/2023 11:26

“oh my god, he’s appeared in physical form! We have a physical apparition!”

If he really shouted all that out, it sounds so forced and obvs. rehearsed that I'd have burst out laughing. Especially since 'appearing in physical form' means exactly that you have a 'physical apparition'. I'd have asked for my money back.

ManateeFair · 01/11/2023 11:26

Absolutely YANBU! It sounds like an utterly absurd situation - even if I believed in ghosts I would have felt the same as you did.

I'm generally on the sceptical side but like you, I'd have gone with the intention of taking it seriously and I'm interested in 'haunted' places and in people's weird experiences. I certainly don't believe that ghosts are the souls of the dead - I'm sure there are possible scientific explanations for the things people experience, though, and that we don't yet understand what they are, and I do find that fascinating. But in the situation you describe I'd have probably got a terrible attack of the giggles too; it's ridiculous 😂

That sounds absolutely hilarious. Even funnier if they were being serious so the comedy was unintentional 🤣

Itsnotchristmasyet · 01/11/2023 11:26

I’m sorry but I think YABU

I wouldn’t go to one of these things because I don’t believe in it but you chose to and these other people paid money to do something they enjoy.

You say you wouldn’t take the piss but you did when you ran out laughing.

Why did you even go in the first place?

I do understand nervous laughing and that you can’t help yourself but I think that it would have been inevitable you wouldn’t have enjoyed it or ended up laughing, so I think it’s a bit shitty you affected other peoples experiences.

I wouldn’t go into a church and start laughing at the priest because I don’t believe it.
If I felt myself starting to nervously laugh or get the giggles I would have said that I’m not feeling well and waited in the car.

CacenCaws · 01/11/2023 11:27

Sounds like a pile of shit. I would have been more annoyed at having paid for the experience 😂

No way!! Ooh woops lost another one to demonic possession, never mind, let's carry on and try and contact the evil overlord.

I hope she was a stooge and not someone experiencing some kind of mental breakdown as @KimberleyClark pointed out.

That’s exactly what I did! Said I had to get some fresh air and left. I didn’t want to say I wasn’t feeling well as the guide was putting everyone’s “unwellness” down to ghostly possessions

And I did want to enjoy it, I love paranormal, I certainly didn’t go with the intention of messing around

Yeah he actually said this, honestly it was very Derek Acorah. I just thought it would be less dramatic and a bit more realistic

YANBU - you entered the evening with an open attitude and were prepared to go along with it, and you did really well to last as long as you did! This has given me such a well-needed good laugh, thank you!

CitizenofMoronia · 01/11/2023 11:33

I'm a believer and in your position, I would have called them out on not doing their research and calling up fictitious people, sounds like amateurs without a clue to me.

Fallenangelofthenorth · 01/11/2023 11:34

That's in no way even a similar situation. The priest would not be trying to summon up demonic entities I'd hope. And then shrugging off the demonic entities taking hold of people and making them feel sick.

Poodlepup · 01/11/2023 11:34

Absolutely lunacy, I'm with you completely OP. I nearly wet myself reading your post.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 01/11/2023 11:34

Honestly, if your business involves pretending that ghosts have physically manifested in the dark, then you ought to be prepared for some customers to be unimpressed. How much are they charging for this bollocks? I'd be surprised if they make it through many evenings without people giggling or getting bored and leaving.

Mamato29192 · 01/11/2023 11:35

I really don’t know, she didn’t seem to be part of the “tour” if you see what I mean, she was there with a partner/boyfriend/husband

I did think he would have said “ok, we’re going to move on as people are becoming unwell” but no … it was “well, it’s too late for her - but let’s get the ouija board out!” 😂

Younshouod have realised it was all going to be a bit of fun. Does any ghost exist in real life. That would be a matter of opinion. YABU and quite rude too.

Ilovelifeverymuch · 01/11/2023 11:37

Humpfree · 01/11/2023 10:51

I think that’s what made it worse in that everyone was being so serious, even DH who is a bigger skeptic than I am!

I was laughing so hard reading your story and would probably have down the same in your shoes.

Did you end up going back? I would have just waited outside until they finished.

BloodandGlitter · 01/11/2023 11:37

YABU you shouldn't have spoiled it for the other people who paid. You might not believe but they did and wanted the experience much like Itsnotchristmasyet said you wouldn't walk into a church or mosque and start laughing because you're not a believer - because it's rude as fuck.

No I left, was more interested in seeing who had been evicted from Big Brother, plus my back was absolutely killing me.
