Storm Ciaran, walking to school.

Anyone else wondered if it'll be safe to walk to and from school tomorrow with weather warnings in place? We have a 20ish min walk and I don't have a car. Considering booking a taxi but am counting every penny. Or am I being ott and walk will likely be fine? Already very windy here.

If it’s too bad then just keep them home. I think there’s a lot of uncertainty about this storm, it could change direction slightly and be either a lot worse or not half as bad. We are not in the amber warning zone but told that it could change. My dd travels by taxi for 40 minutes to school and I am a little worried if the winds are 80mph, we live in a rural location and trees often come down.

Joonio · 01/11/2023 15:46

Stay at home if it's bad.

Ratfinkstinkypink · 01/11/2023 15:48

Our school isn't closed but an email has come out saying absences tomorrow due to the weather will be authorised.

Peablockfeathers · 01/11/2023 15:48

The irony of those saying the media are whipping people up into a frenzy when they evidently haven't actually looked at the forecast. If winds are as predicted especially in areas in the South its due to be one of the worst storms in many, many years. An Amber warning and those potential wind speeds aren't to be sniffed at, its just as ignorant to just ignore the media without actually looking into it yourself as it is to blindly believe it.

Op I'd wait and see how it is overnight and tomorrow, flying debris along with obstructed roads is a recipe for issues, of course might be absolutely fine though!

jc12689 · 01/11/2023 15:13

The issue isn't people it's the Met office and other organizations giving names to moderate breezes and calling them hurricanes.

They’re not calling it a hurricane. Hurricanes are tropical cyclones which travel east to west across the Atlantic. They’re calling it a European windstorm, which is what it is. If you think that 85mph gusts are “moderate breezes” then more fool you.

TheOldLadyOfThreadneedleStreet · 01/11/2023 15:50

2 out of 3 roads to our rural house are flooded already, I suspect we will have a hard time getting DD to school tomorrow so I think OP is right to be cautious. This afternoon the road I chose was near impassable, with a night’s additional rain we may not be doing the school run tomorrow. But I’ll make our final decision tomorrow morning.

Sum up everything wrong with people these days. Its not like its a bloody hurricane or tropical storm.

Echoes of Michael Fish! I'm in Cornwall and the forecast is Category 1 Hurricane conditions (70-90mph winds). We're battening down the hatches tonight.

Yes Amber.

It might be that the school closes, ours did the week before last.

I've had an email saying 'see you at parents evening' 😅

DS school has emailed that they are monitoring the situation and will decide by 7am if they need any closures. This is in East Sussex close to Kent so I'd say decide in the morning.these warnings exist for a reason.

Julyandraining · 01/11/2023 16:05

Our son's school is closed. Not rural. And most around here are. South Coast.

Pleaseme · 01/11/2023 16:15

Last storm I was in the work car park which is pretty exposed. There was a stack of panels which were about 8ft by 4ft which caught the wind and went sailing over the front of the car. It was like being in the wizard of Oz. Just luck that no one and nothing was hit. I’d still walk but I’d be cautious of flying debris.

Ifnottodaywhen · 01/11/2023 16:33

I'm in Devon and just had messages from both schools attended by DC to say they are closed on advice from county council. It's currently an amber warning but may change to red apparently.

BitOutOfPractice · 01/11/2023 16:37

Speaking as someone who was hit in the face by a fixture flying off a building in storms last year, I am now much more cautious!

Perfect28 · 01/11/2023 16:37

My school in shut

CremeEggThief · 01/11/2023 16:42

I think you can only decide for definite in the morning, but just to point out it might not be that easy to get a taxi at school run time. It's extremely difficult in our area, as most taxi drivers have school run contracts for the Council, so there's hardly any availability for any other members of the public...

Changednamesforthis22 · 01/11/2023 16:43

I received an email from my child's school today saying they are considering closing tommorow and we will get a text in the morning if so. So you're not being ott.

Custardcream1985 · 01/11/2023 16:44

Ignore ignorance OP, you are being careful and that’s what the Met Office are advising.

If I were you I would call the school when the office opens (which is usually a short while before registration). You’ll then have a current idea of how the weather is and you can either advise you will be taking it slowly and will be late, or you can confirm you will be on time and gather info from the school about pick up time if the weather worsens.

If it is really bad, other people will be calling in too and so the office will be the best place for advice.

Good luck 🌬

Same. South East on the border of the Amber warning, but in yellow at the moment.

cheezncrackers · 01/11/2023 16:47

If it's not safe for children to walk to school I would expect the council to close its schools for the day.

EasternStandard · 01/11/2023 16:48

Haven’t heard of a shut school here, should be ok here but where you are may be different

We're right on the coast in Hampshire. I haven't heard anything about schools closing and didn't even consider it a possibility! Will have to keep checking the school app.

Southampton has closures: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-hampshire-67288983.amp

This just happened on the road to our school. Luckily after school pickup so no children walking along the lane. But apparently amber weather warnings are ‘scaremongering’.

I remember Years ago now, a much loved young teacher from my school was injured in strong winds as a scaffold pole fell and hit her head. She was off for months but luckily recovered in Time

YANBU to be concerned OP
