To want a HOT chocolate?

I know it's me and that I'm an uncultured swine with an asbestos mouth, but I'm starting to feel disappointed whenever I try out a lovely, independent shop which prides themselves on doing a spectacular hot chocolate, only to be given a cup of (admittedly delicious) lukewarm chocolate instead. Which is no good when I want to sit and savour it, and do the whole 'two hands around the mug, jumper sleeves dangling to my fingers' thing. Instead I end up having to gulp it down before it actually goes cold.

I did mention it at my local coffee shop when they started doing the same with their coffees, only to be told that it's the optimum temperature for the beans, and I've heard that the Hotel Chocolat Velvetiser produces lukewarm chocolate too. So I suppose the experts have spoken!

Looks like I'll have to stick to tea.

Of course the way round this is to intend the drink for a small child, in which case it will be both the temperature and consistency of lava.

😂😂😂

shivawn · 01/11/2023 12:38

Totally agree OP. I want my hot chocolate super hot, the marshmallows should melt into a lovely frothy sweet layer on top not just sit there bopping sadly in a lukewarm mug.

My husband makes me a lovely hot chocolate from his coffee machine but I have to nuke it for 30 seconds in the microwave after because the machine doesn't get it hot.

Marshmallows?!

No no no. You can't be in my HC club 😂

(I am always faced with baffled faces when I refuse cream + marshmallows. No. I just want the chocolate. But hot)

I think I have a different definition of lukewarm to many. You do as you like op it's your money after all.

But honestly (and this is definitely because of my fanny of a dad) I find the type of person who has to have food and drink a certain temp a pain in the arse. It's as if none of us have made any compromise ever on the temp of or food and drink. Or I don't know something about not being able to tolerate any variation from their idea of perfect. And I suppose that many cultures do have room temp food. But that's absolutely a projection based on him and that being his personality.

I'm sure there are people wjo insist of piping hot who aren't like this, I've just found there is definitely a correlation, and the sample isn't just my dad!! 😂

LegendsBeyond · 01/11/2023 12:50

I agree. I feel like it’s a waste of money when I can drink it in 30 seconds. My velvetiser hot chocolate goes in the microwave after making so it’s hot enough for me.

RaraRachael · 01/11/2023 13:04

The only place I can get a decent on is Costa if I ask for extra hot. When I previously complained I was told that they only serve them at X degrees and if you want it to be anything like actually hot you have to ask for extra hot.

Side note - I had the most disgusting not even remotely lukewarm one in a coffee shop round the corner from the Mousetrap theatre on Saturday night. We were in desperation for somewhere to get out of the rain until the doors opened,

On a side note I'm a trained barista and yes the milk has an optimum temp.. we have thermometer on the side of the jug.. if people asked for a hot latte I would just do it to boiling point if that's what they wished but I always wondered if it tasted different!

@mylittleponyrainbow

yes it does. Unfortunately.

i like my drinks HOT, I was under the illusion that if I had a decent machine I could make a HOT latte.

but sadly if I heat the milk over 65° It tastes horrible.

at least at home I can make the cup hot and not faff about making it. It's still not AS hot as I'd like, but better than cafes!!

I take the point but I'd never be fussy in say, someone else's house.

But if I'm going to a coffee shop, buying a drink as a treat, that's costing me the most part of €5, yes, I'll be specific about my preference.

There's also a time & place - if I'm not happy I'll politely ask for my drink to be remade. But if there's a long queue, they are short staffed or whatever, I won't (tho will be internally disappointed)

mokjkjjo · 01/11/2023 13:20

I agree. In many places it’s barely warm, and I don’t enjoy lukewarm drinks.

Starbucks here make it lukewarm however I’ve always found it’s hot when made at the Starbucks service stations I’ve been to.

I have a Velvetiser and the first cup from mine is ok for me - hotter than lukewarm - but the second cup is much hotter. I make the first cup for the DC as it’s just right for them.

queenofthewild · 01/11/2023 13:32

I am not alone!

Every hot chocolate I've had recently away from home has been served in a cold cup and is 75% foam with a tiny dribble of warm chocolate at the bottom.

I want a full cup of hot chocolate, no foam, maybe a bit of squirty cream. Like hot chocolate used to be.

Now that's an idea! Travelling around Europe sampling their hot chocolate offerings. That's my December sorted 😊☕

Please can I come too? I will bring us some cosy books to read.

@ShirleyPhallus YES vulnerable sleeves!! That's exactly it! I didn't know it had a word! Bonus points for my pensive expression as I look out onto a rainy street, of course. There might even be a cat.

I love this thread 😂

I'm with you OP I hate tepid drinks even if they're technically at the 'correct' temperature.

The clue is in the name. It's Hot Chocolate.

I can make it hot at home, without this precious "burning" of the milk. I used to be able to buy it in cafes some years ago. Modern cafes can't seem to do it, even when expressly asked to. It's not a treat when it is an expensive disappointment, served barely warm.

aSofaNearYou · 01/11/2023 09:14

I've never experienced a hot drink I've ordered not being too hot for at least 5 minutes, so from my perspective YABU. Must be the asbestos tongue!

This is what I tend to find, but to be fair I’m not talking about hot chocolate as a rarely drink it.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 01/11/2023 13:43

My aunt is like this about tea - she needs it scalding hot.

The problem is, if you’ve got a cup of tea just cooled to the right temperature (and I don’t drink it lukewarm by any standards, it’s just a non burning-you-mouth temperature) she’ll find it and say “oh it’s gone cold I’ll make you another”, and have your lovely, just right cup of tea poured away if you’re not quick. Losing a cup of perfectly cooled tea is such a tragedy too!

Elphame · 01/11/2023 13:49

The last time I ordered a hot chocolate it was full of artificial sweeteners as well as not being hot enough.

I don't risk it now.

Justmuddlingalong · 01/11/2023 13:50

The hotter the drink, the longer you're taking up a seat. It's probably a bloody ploy so you drink your tepid beverage and piss off quickly.

Girlswillbetwirls · 01/11/2023 13:59

I agree, I ask for it to be extra hot and it seems to work for me in cafe Nero and also carluccios the Italian chain restaurant company. Their Earlsfield branch in London did an amazing piping hot thick creamy HC.

Not sure if the latter company is still around.

No, I'm almost always getting it to go.

We're really not. A lot of people who've seen me drink a hot drink comment on how fast I drink it, I've normally finished it before others have drunk about a quarter of theirs. Because I want to drink it while it's still hot.

If it was tepid, I couldn't drink it without heating it up again, which isn't something that's generally available in a coffee shop.

CoffeeKindleCrapTalker · 01/11/2023 14:04

Costa deluxe mocha is UNREAL!!!!

Manicule · 01/11/2023 14:06

I’ve lost count of the number of takeaway coffees I’ve had a couple of sips from and then poured down the nearest drain in despair. Very occasionally I’ll go back and ask nicely if they can make it hotter but usually you’re on the move somewhere and you’re out of the shop and away and it’s too late.

When coffee was relatively cheap that was just annoying but now it costs well over £3 for a flat white I resent it much more.

coolkatt · 01/11/2023 14:09

finally!! someeone else who has noticed this!
it really pisses me off i don't care about the beans preferences i care about my taste buds preferences and i want the chocolate hot!! i've had every excuse under the sun why it's almost cold and at the point now that false advertisements should be called out and it should be rebranded lukewarm chocolate so folk know what they are buying.

SpinningSpiralBee · 01/11/2023 14:10

I am currently travelling

I was going to have coffee at a motorway service station

Instead I thought I would try a Macdonalds hot chocolate

It was hot & chocolatey

I would order it again

PabloandGustheGreySquirrels · 01/11/2023 15:54

@Burnoutwhat Well that's nonsense as I manage to get milk boiling hot at home without it burning. You must be doing it wrong
