Dishwasher help! Water at the bottom

User5512 · 31/10/2023 19:59

Inlaws have nearly new bosch dishwasher. MIL called earlier today saying the dishwasher isn’t working. DH went around to check - there is dirty water at the bottom. He emptied it and tried to turn it on. It runs for 5 mins and stops with the “tap” light on.
Any idea what might be causing this? We called Bosch and the engineer can’t come until 16th Nov !! MIL will really struggle until then - DH most likely has to go around to do the dishes! (Mil has health issues). So any help in sorting this out is greatly appreciated!

Quick Google, looks like the dishwasher isn't getting enough water, could be a blockage

does that mean there could be a problem with inbound fresh water pipe?
or could it be a blockage in the waste water pipe?

Have they cleaned the filter ?

If the pull the bottom cage drawer out you just unscrew the filter which the size of a tin can. Clean off the gunk and wash and rinse under the tap

HakunaMatiłda · 31/10/2023 20:08

Either of those. How long has it been in situ and who installed it?

HappiDaze · 31/10/2023 20:09

Is there a separate tap (blue) taking the mains to the dishwasher? It might not be turn up fully

I have one of these going to my washing machine which I turn off when I go on holiday

Jellykat · 31/10/2023 20:10

You need Piglet John, but havent seen him around for a while..
Logically, as Happidaze said, i'd think not draining properly if theres water in the bottom = filter check

britinnyc · 31/10/2023 20:12

I have a Bosch that does this when the filter is clogged. I figured out how to clean it by watching YouTube videos for the model. You then have to do a reset to get it to work again, I found that in the handbook for the model. I think this happens with Bosch dishwashers a lot

StephanieLampshade · 31/10/2023 20:12

The metal plate at base of dishwasher needs removing, the filter needs cleaning and all water and food particles from underneath the metal plate needs removing.

Blanketpolicy · 31/10/2023 20:13

There are loads of videos on you tube showing how to remove/clean filter, and then click off the pump cover thing so you can stick your fingers in and check for foreign bodies (watch out for glass).

It usually fixes ours.

Redhothoochycoocher · 31/10/2023 20:14

If you skip to appx 3.10 on this video it will show you what my Bosch has needed the last 2 times it was not draining. It's a very easy fix if this is the problem.

Stanislas · 31/10/2023 20:15

If there is a slight kink in the inflow this could be the cause. Sometimes pushing the door closed rather hard pushes the dishwasher further back and kinks the pipe. The plumber ( for me) charged me £200 for his time. I googled and pulled dishwasher forward slightly and the damn thing worked of course.

FanSpamTastic · 31/10/2023 20:20

I had this once - had to keep bailing out the water! I did a bit of Googling - can't remember where I found it but suggested there was something trapped in the drain bit. I had to take out the filter and then there is another bit under that that you need to check. This video explains it quite well .

NeverDropYourMooncup · 31/10/2023 20:22

Have they blocked the filter?

It's often because the filter hasn't been cleaned and/or the outlet is full of solidified fat, bits of rice, peas, corn and all other such nasties. Failing that, if they've not been great at scraping plates off or binning cooking fat and the outlet hose at the other end is connected to the U bend, the bend itself is blocked with all of the above evilness.

Needed:

Rubber gloves
Bowl of hot, soapy water
Washing up sponge
Couple of towels
Bucket that fits underneath the U bend
Something to poke with

  1. Take filter assembly out. Clean, clean, clean.
  2. Check the outlet underneath the filter, removing any cruddy bits.
  3. Put the filter back.
  4. Check the water in the sink runs away easily.

4a: If it does, there could be a blockage in the hose from DW to U bend.

Bucket underneath U bend where hose connects. Carefully disconnect and place into bucket, keeping the bucket still under the U bend. See if water drains quickly in the sink. Press and hold the Start button (it is on most Bosches, anyway) to see if it forces an emergency drain (ie, pumps any left over water out). A lot of water comes out if this is clear, hence the bucket). Gently use pokey thing (chopstick?), holding it very firmly, to dislodge any nastiness. Check the sticky out bit of U bend where the hose connects to see if it's crudded up.

4b: If when running the tap at 4, it doesn't drain freely, it's likely to be the U bend blocked.

Bucket underneath U bend where hose connects. You're still going to have to remove the hose as in 4a, but this time, you carefully unscrew the entire U bend section, take out and unblock/clean clean clean.

5: Put the U bend and DW hose back gently but firmly, being careful not to cross thread the fittings.

If the sink didn't drain after ensuring the entire U bend and the DW hose is clear, you've got a blockage further along. Call a plumber if nobody can deal with fatberg formation (or unfold a wire coathanger if you're feeling lucky).

MonumentalLentil · 31/10/2023 20:47

Check the incoming hose is the correct height, it will be in the instructions.

Check neither hose is kinked or bent and the little connector taps are in the correct position.

Clean filter by removing it and washing it out.

If there is a water softener, ensure it is working correctly and not preventing water entering the DW.

Check drains are clear.

It might be necessary to pull the DW away from the wall to check pipes. It might also be necessary to replace the hoses with longer ones if the machine is not under the sink/draining board.

Bobbybobbins · 31/10/2023 20:56

Ours kept doing this. I took out filter then used vinegar and baking powder (lots of each) down the waste pipe. Then loads of boiling water after 15 mins. Has worked perfectly since then. Obviously this won't work if it's the in pipe but might be worth a try.

User5512 · 31/10/2023 20:58

Filter cleaned - it was quite clean tbh. No junk. Removed the pump cover and found a piece of garlic in there.

Reset it and turned it on. Been running for 10mins. Fingers crossed !

Fingers crossed!

User5512 · 31/10/2023 21:54

Update:

We cleared all the water and reset it. Then turned it on. Quick wash cycle. it ran full cycle and just as it started steam at the end, it stopped and the “tap” light is on again :(

There is water at the bottom again!

Oh no how frustrating! Bumping again for you

junglejane66 · 01/11/2023 15:11

From the instructions it says its a water fill issue not a draining one. From experience if it was working ok before and it hasnt been moved etc. and the filters are clean then there is usually some wrong with the machine.
When the machine stops can you get it to drain? (I think you hold down two buttons?) If it drains then filters/discharge pipe isnt the problem.
Last thing I would check is the filter on the fill pipe, but I dont think thats the issue.

mumda · 01/11/2023 15:43

Is there another garlic in there?

TeenagersAngst · 01/11/2023 15:45

Have you also turned it off at the wall and on again? We had an error code appear last week - something to do with the water pipe - but turning it off at the mains seemed to clear it. There's no evidence of any water under the machine so i'm assuming it's not mechanical!

LIZS · 01/11/2023 15:47

Is the drainage hose kinked? Most go into a downpipe via an inverted u to keep it open. Can you post pics of the inlet and outlet hoses?

JoWawa · 01/11/2023 15:48

Buy a bottle of dishwater deap cleaner in any supermarket. Take off the seal turn it upside down and put it in the rack. Turn the dishwasher on to the hottest programme. It clears the fat and waste from the drain pipe. Works really well, we have to do it in our holiday lets every few months.
