Who actually benefits from changing the clocks?

Kids up at 5:30. Pretty sure that the same thing has happened in many, many houses this morning.

It's just an hour, but so disruptive to children.

Who benefits? Winds me up every year.

Try living in Scotland and realising how late it gets light in the morning. Edinburgh is west of Bristol so forcing us all to pretend we live in central Europe for 7 months of the year is ridiculous. We should be on GMT all year round.

Edinburgh is not west of Bristol…

Scotland benefits, thanks for asking. So do plenty other people. Your discomfort doesn’t outweigh that oddly enough. If you feel that strongly write to your MP.

Having reflected on OPs question I went looking for the research. Really shouldn’t have done as I now know that the twice-yearly changing of the clocks is associated with medical risks including heart attack and stroke. Damn.

grottyb · 31/10/2023 07:39

@MassageForLife thank you. I’m in the South so obviously it’s location specific & cannot be extrapolated to everywhere.

Overloadimplode · 31/10/2023 07:39

I like it. Gets the kids to bed earlier.

Taylorswiftserastour · 31/10/2023 07:40

My usually early waker woke up at 7am this morning instead of 6am so I got a small lie in and the chance for a shower without him peering over the bath asking why I have hair on my penis.

I do not have a penis.

Well, fuck fhem.

Get over yourself. We need farmers

People without young kids? Mine enjoy the extra hour in bed as much as I do now. And I like that I'm up more easily this week because my body clock hasn't adjusted yet (it will have done by next week!)

Sorry but we kind of need farmers

We definitely need farmers.

I don't know if this image is accurate but...

Jesus Christ. Stop fucking moaning.

This.

And stop being horrible about farmers. 'Fuck them' indeed.

Stroopwaffels · 31/10/2023 07:42

Edinburgh IS west of Bristol, it just looks as if it isn't on most maps which are straightened.

And you can bet your kilt that the nationalists would love nothing more than to hoick us into a different time zone than the rest of the UK to prove their point that we're oh so different.

fishfingersandtoes · 31/10/2023 07:42

I appreciate it. I hate leaving the house to go to work in the dark, so the extra hour of light in the morning is very welcome.
My kids are now past the early getting up stage though

sashh · 31/10/2023 07:43

Well my birthday was 25 hours. I claim a win.

Stillwaitingfor · 31/10/2023 07:43

I fucking hate it and wish someone would kill it already

FelicityBeedle · 31/10/2023 07:43

It also benefits the north of England, not just the Scots.
I start work at 7 and get public transport in so I’m glad of all the light I can get

BandicootCrash · 31/10/2023 07:44

Plenty of kids are walking to school/bus stops by 7.30. Here in West Devon (and probably up North as well) it was still dark at that time until the clocks went back. Even with the clock change, we still hold the light until 4.30pm, so it's the best way to get the majority of kids to and from school safely.

If you're in the South East, either GMT or BST would probably be OK.

MassageForLife · 31/10/2023 07:45

I would love to see where this idea originates. All nationalists? I live in Scotland, and know plenty of people that want independence. I've never heard this before...

aswarmofmidges · 31/10/2023 07:45

But doesn't that just mean you would be ok with GMT all year rather than clocks changing twice ?

Luana1 · 31/10/2023 07:45

shockwaze · 31/10/2023 06:41

But would all farmers cease to work if we stayed on GMT. No

I agree OP, we should just stay on GMT all year around - the whole idea of changing the clocks is just weird. We've been lucky as the DC have always just slept until we wake them, but our cat woke us up at 6am today to go out on his adventures, so that wasn't so fun. Although I do have to say we enjoyed the extra hour in bed on Sunday before DS' sport started at 9:30am.

I've lived in Bristol and in Edinburgh, and I never realised this! 🤦‍♀️

User1786 · 31/10/2023 07:46

I didn’t affect my children or me at all for that matter but I do hate making the change. Wish it would stay at BST all year or even better double daylight saving +2. I love the brighter evening when the light is actually useful and hate the bright mornings, particularly when it’s bright at 4or 5 am!

SoupDragon · 31/10/2023 07:46

shockwaze · 31/10/2023 06:25

Not sure they're that bothered considering it's 2023 and we have electric lights. Plus they probably have children waking too early too.

You must live near some posh fields if they have electric lighting in them.
