Who actually benefits from changing the clocks?

Kids up at 5:30. Pretty sure that the same thing has happened in many, many houses this morning.

It's just an hour, but so disruptive to children.

Who benefits? Winds me up every year.

Have to say this thread has been an absolute eye opener. Can't believe the difference a single hour's change has on people.

It does make a difference - I can see the truth in what a pp said about it being cold in the mornings and it may be slightly less icy if you've had a bit more early morning daylight and sun on the ice.

And at the other end of the day, I don't like driving in the dark, so if it gets dark at 6pm rather than 5pm that is a win for me. In the depths of winter it makes no difference but then that's true for the mornings as well.

Vettrianofan · 31/10/2023 14:55

I have DC who don't finish secondary school until around 4/4.30pm depending on what extra classes are running for prelim revision and it's pitch black around 5pm.

Yes I understand those type of differences, though to be honest for three of the five months the differences are negligible. I mean, if we stayed on BST, the majority of the country would still be dark by 5pm during December and much of November and January .

I mean what the OP is on about. Her kids being up earlier and her being tired. Do they not adapt within a few days?

Tell him it's the north too.

I will but he’s a miserable sod so he’ll still complain.

ShatteredPeace · 31/10/2023 15:49

All the people moaning about the hour difference and the precious kids routines and heart attacks and strokes and blah blah blah... bet none of you worry when you head to France or Spain for your holidays. Just get over yourselves.

AmandasFleckerl · 31/10/2023 15:52

RomeoOscarXrayXray · 31/10/2023 12:37

And the problem with that is what?

I'd be happy to stay on GMT year round (which is the "proper time") because in Scotland we have long, light evenings in the summer anyway. During BST it doesn't get dark till after 11pm at the height of summer.

Why should the UK change to BST in the summer so that you lot down south have lighter evenings?

You’d have to ask him, personally it doesn’t bother me.

QueenCamilla · 31/10/2023 15:58

I hate the change to winter time. It definitely contributes to my seasonal affective disorder how quickly it gets dark.

The morning people would be up and about early anyway, come dark, light, rain or shine and they still would be up at 5pm on an evening. However, I lose valuable daylight to some imaginary farming need.

The crappy summer, constant rain and darkness are really affecting my wellbeing.
If this country were bigger with a proper "South", I'd be there like a shot!

WestwardHo1 · 31/10/2023 17:17

But it's been EXPLAINED why it's done! It's not "some imaginary farming need"

As a pp said, I don't suppose anyone moans about physiological effects when they go to France or Spain.

shockwaze · 31/10/2023 06:18

Well, fuck fhem.

I see that you think that your children should be prioritised over everyone else. Well, you're wrong.

Farmers are more important to me than your children are, because they actually benefit my life.

Robyn847 · 31/10/2023 17:25

Come March 2024 we should just go forward by ½hr and then be done with it forever. Perfect compromise.

anyoneanyoneanyone · 31/10/2023 17:27

farmers

Everyone's children benefit everyone's lives btw

taybert · 31/10/2023 17:47

I think stay on GMT all year, make school summer holidays earlier so children are off school for the good bit with the long days and make them 5 weeks not 6, then use the spare week in September to catch late summer/early autumn. Sorted. Next question.

AmandasFleckerl · 31/10/2023 06:41

Every year as my dad is changing the clock in the kitchen he complains claiming that it’s only done for the benefit of schoolchildren in Scotland.

😂My dad used to say the same when he was alive. He was a farmer.

My vote in March 2024 would be for BST and stay there.

no I don't want it to be dark at 10am in mornings

Poppysmom22 · 31/10/2023 18:08

I'm happy to go along with this very minor inconvenience to make someone else's life a bit easier.

ithinkthatmaybeimdreaming · 31/10/2023 19:31

Orangeandgold · 31/10/2023 09:45

Farmers apparently

But I thought we were more advanced with technology!

On day 1 it’s fine because it’s normally a Sunday and we can lie in.

And then on Monday we all oversleep!!

Don't you have alarm clocks in the UK? In my entire life I have never encountered anyone who couldn't get up at the right time when the clocks changed.

MeridaBrave · 31/10/2023 19:34

Who benefits? The children who dont have to walk to school in the dark.

Rosiem2808 · 31/10/2023 19:37

I start work at 6.30am so a bit more light is a bonus

miral · 31/10/2023 19:43

Who benefits? Anyone who works in agriculture or other outdoor jobs. Anyone who lives in the northern parts of the UK - our mornings aren’t quite as dark as they would be otherwise.

Bunnycat101 · 31/10/2023 19:45

I’m always a bit baffled by the argument around children not walking to school in the dark when so many are leaving school in the dark. It always feels like a major shock to the system to pick my children up from wrap around and it be dark. In the summer they’re out being active and playing outside but once it’s dark they are largely inside. I hate leaving work in the dark as well so I do really feel it when the clocks change.

on the plus side, my youngest is now 4 and for the first time ever they slept in on the Sunday and we had a proper lie in. It was amazing! Normally we’ve had one of them up at silly o clock.

miral · 31/10/2023 19:45

We already do most of that in Scotland and it’s us who would suffer darker mornings the most without the change

miral · 31/10/2023 19:47

Yeah fuck them. Until you actually want food to eat.
