Sian Eleri accent is exaggerated?

Luciansmum6 · 29/10/2023 00:08

Am I being unreasonable to think Sian eleri of bbc radio, podcasts and on bbc iplayers “paranormal- the girl the ghost and the gravestone” has a very strange accent. I love some welsh accents however I spent a lot of my early years holidays in north wales and still visit often. The accents in north wales barely sound welsh tbh. She grew up in North Wales apparently and then lived in London for years and years. She sounds so over the top welsh it sounds really put on. Maybe she tries to not lose her accent or something but for none of it to have faded is strange- or to have such a strong one in the first place when she is from north wales is unusual. Is it just me that has noticed this?

YABVU. The north Walian accent is really distinctive. She has a classic north Walian accent and sounds like thousands of other folk from north Wales.

Perhaps you expect everyone Welsh to sound like Nessa from Gavin & Stacey?! #sweepinggeneralisations

TheCountessofLocksley · 29/10/2023 00:22

Think you're overreaching. She sounds just like my cousins who are North East Wallian but who have spent time at English Uni in Liverpool, Leeds and Sheffield.

Daimyum · 29/10/2023 00:37

She sounds Welsh..
Another idiot who goes on holiday and all of a sudden think they're Welsh and know everything about the language🤣

Daimyum · 29/10/2023 00:43

Where she comes from, Gwynedd is mostly Welsh speaking. Her accent is normal for that area. If you don't like it, stay in England or don't listen to the show. What gives you a right to slag somebody off and say such a thing. Is the black person next door too black or the Liverpoodlian too scouse souning for you aswell?

sensitile · 29/10/2023 00:43

She's hard to listen to, living in south wales its a much nicer accent down south.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 29/10/2023 00:50

You spent some holidays in North Wales when you were a child and you’re now a specialist in Dialectology. Fucking hilarious.

SabbatWheel · 29/10/2023 00:51

YABVU. She has a very standard north-Walian accent.

Haggisfish3 · 29/10/2023 01:05

Shes hard to listen to?! Ffs. Her accent is perfectly bloody lovely and typical of where she comes from. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if welsh is her first language.

As a south Walian…I think you’re wrong. All accents have their own beauty. Also, which south Walian accent are you referring to? We have dozens!

Vansbrowneyedgirl · 04/11/2023 13:52

She’s got a beautiful accent, I love listening to her.

Iliedwheniwas17 · 04/11/2023 13:53

She sounds north west walian to me. I’m north east and barely sound welsh. The further west you go, the more welsh the accent. North and south also have totally different accents

Gerrataere · 04/11/2023 14:01

I’m from NW and this attitude towards the accent really pisses me off. It’s like someone saying they went to Liverpool and didn’t understand why everyone had such a strange accent because they expect every English person to sound like they’re from London. Not everyone from Wales sounds like they walked off the set of Gavin and Stacey, the accents are as varied as any other country that’s part of the UK.

Gerrataere · 04/11/2023 14:04

Just googled her, very obvious North West Wales accent, maybe you should actually visit the area op so you know it’s not ‘exaggerated’. Or look up Glyn from Big Brother, sounds exactly the same.

Oohyoudaftbat · 04/11/2023 14:04

Cer i grafu, OP!

Crikeyisthatthetime · 04/11/2023 14:09

OP, you know how people from Manchester have a different accent to people from Liverpool? Funnily enough, it's the same in Wales.

Diolchynfawr · 04/11/2023 14:10

She is from Caernarfon. Her accent is very authentic.

Itsnamechange · 04/11/2023 14:17

Jesus this place. I take a break and come back and realise how screamingly little England it is

ChristmasFluff · 04/11/2023 15:45

Fuck me, I lived in Scotland for years and never lost my English accent - was I being over the top English and putting it on?

Zanatdy · 04/11/2023 15:55

I grew up in north wales and have more of a north west accent. It very much depends

Zanatdy · 04/11/2023 15:58

Just googled her and her accent is perfectly normal for the areas she’s from.

But largely true. People from South Wales have much stronger accents.

And a lot of people from North Wales sound like they come from the Merseyside area.

But I don't know who Sian Eleri is so I can't comment on whether her accent is/sounds contrived or not.

FlyingNorth · 04/11/2023 16:48

A lot of people who live in North Wales are actually from Merseyside - it's quite a common move. Sian Eleri has a good strong North Walian accent. If anything the North Wales accent can sound weirdly like a West Indian one.

Thewelshcastle · 04/11/2023 17:24

It's absolutely not exaggerated - I too grew up in Caernarfon and have an almost identical accent. The accents are much stronger in Gwynedd probably due to the high numbers of Welsh speakers.
