Sian Eleri accent is exaggerated?

Luciansmum6 · 29/10/2023 00:08

Am I being unreasonable to think Sian eleri of bbc radio, podcasts and on bbc iplayers “paranormal- the girl the ghost and the gravestone” has a very strange accent. I love some welsh accents however I spent a lot of my early years holidays in north wales and still visit often. The accents in north wales barely sound welsh tbh. She grew up in North Wales apparently and then lived in London for years and years. She sounds so over the top welsh it sounds really put on. Maybe she tries to not lose her accent or something but for none of it to have faded is strange- or to have such a strong one in the first place when she is from north wales is unusual. Is it just me that has noticed this?

But largely true. People from South Wales have much stronger accents.

And a lot of people from North Wales sound like they come from the Merseyside area.

But I don't know who Sian Eleri is so I can't comment on whether her accent is/sounds contrived or not.

A lot of people from the North East corner of Wales sound like they come from Merseyside. Sian Eleri doesn’t come from there. North West Wales has a distinctively Welsh accent. Sian Eleri has that accent.

cardibach · 04/11/2023 17:26

Oh - also, Pembrokeshire is South Wales. Very soft, hardly noticeable Welsh accent there. So you’re also wrong about North/South @enchantedsquirrelwood

It’s not true. It depends where in South wales and where in north wales and whether you are welsh speaking and what accent you are expecting for a welsh person.if you think of a south walian accent as welsh obviously that will sound more welsh to you.

BeardieWeirdie · 05/11/2023 21:56

She’s from Caernarfon and has a perfectly normal Cofi accent. We don’t sound like Scousers or South Walians here!

USaYwHatNow · 05/11/2023 22:14

I don't think it's put on, howeverrrrr she does sound very different on radio to what she sounds like during tv interviews etc. I'm Welsh but I find her accent annoying.

PaulOzzz · 25/12/2023 09:55

Exactly this. There was a moment recently on Radio1 where she dropped her accent, seemed to confuse herself for a few words. I'm sure it's her local accent, but definitely exaggerated.

1AnotherOne · 25/12/2023 10:10

I had no idea her name was spelt like that. I listen now and again and assumed it was Shana Leary 🤣

Kaztastic60 · 05/02/2024 19:16

I thought exactly the same, I've seen her acting in several roles, and her accent isn't so pronounced. It grates on me 🙄, I can't concentrate on the actual program 😂

Rockschooldropout · 05/02/2024 19:24

I’ve only just seen this ..so I’m late to the party but it annoys the hell out of me when people expect N Walians to sound like S Walians .. I’m from Bangor in Gwynedd and a Gwynedd accent is very distinctive.. it’s a much harder accent than the S Walian lilt.. although even S Walians have regional differences in their accents . Her accent sounds perfectly normal for Gwynedd to me .

oOmoonhaOo · 05/02/2024 19:29

I was born in Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, grew up in NE Wales then moved to Gwynedd at aged 17. Still there now at age 40 and I think she is exaggerating her accent… I can’t stand listening to her!

Luciansmum6 · 05/02/2024 22:39

Glad a few more people have noticed it and it’s not just me. Thing is I know south wales and different parts of wales sound different but I can tell she puts bits on and from where she said she grew up and having lived away from wales most of her adult life I don’t think it tallies up.

Almost like she was acting then…

Nice of you to come back with some good old xenophobia.

GettingStuffed · 06/02/2024 11:44

I haven't heard her but my south Walian Welsh teacher said that north Walian welsh sounds odd as they cant open their mouth because it's so windy.

I have a Vale of Glamorgan accent but it changes to Valley type accent if I'm speaking to someone with that accent.

I also managed to pick up the local accent on a geography field trip to
Malham after talking to locals in the pub .

WrecsamRoger · 25/02/2024 17:39

I have watched the haunted house program, I listened to Sian Eleri and fell in love with that accent. That is a genuine North Wales accent. I am studying to Dysgwyr Cymraeg. My grandchildren are Welsh language learners. Some of them live in London. Another Welsh language speaker is Eleri Sion, from South Wales. A different accent, but equally adorable. Think Gavin and Stacey and ask yourself "Is Stacey fluent in Welsh in real life??

RupertsDad · 23/06/2024 13:36

Love that accent... it's home!

Acercard · 30/06/2024 04:02

She has a beautiful Welsh accent.
Makes me melt 🥰**

I used to live in Tenby and I can remember when I moved there saying something to my neighbour about now I lived in South Wales and she was horrified and sternly told me Pembs was West Wales not South Wales. 😁🤷‍♀️

Samthedog71717 · 30/06/2024 05:51

Just moved from Gwynedd after seven years. Her accent is very typical. I lived in Ffestiniog near Blaenau, beautiful place, beautiful humans ❤️

CormorantStrikesBack · 30/06/2024 10:10

Just watching Paranormal (not heard of it before) now and her accent sounds like anyone from when I used to live in Snowdonia.

Arlanymor · 30/06/2024 10:21

She’s a native Welsh speaker from Caernarfon, she sounds just like my friend Gwen… who is a native Welsh speaker from Caernarfon. Not remotely exaggerated. I hope this was an honest question and not a dig, because if it was then cer i bisio! Why do people think there is only one or two accents in Wales? There’s tons!

Exactly! I can’t stand all this ‘one accent sounds more Welsh than another’ bollocks!

She's hard to listen to, living in south wales its a much nicer accent down south.

Which South wales accent do you mean? Cardiff? Swansea? Newport? Ammanford? Valleys? They’re all different.
