Clock change - help a numpty out!

WhyCantIFigureThisOut · 28/10/2023 18:50

I need to get up in the early hours for a flight but the clock change is making me super paranoid, and in my tired state I can't get my head around it!

I need to wake up / set the alarm for (actual) 2am. But, the clocks change at 2am. If I set my alarm for say, 2.02, that should be safe shouldn't it??

No as that will then be 1am new time

BoohooWoohoo · 28/10/2023 18:53

Are you using your phone alarm?

MidnightOnceMore · 28/10/2023 18:54

Oh goodness. I'd buy an analogue clock and change it & set it before I went to bed.

MassageForLife · 28/10/2023 18:55

If you are using an alarm that will sort the time change out by itself, then that is probably the best solution.

PostOfficeInTheCoop · 28/10/2023 18:55

That should be safe using a mobile phone alarm surely? 🤔

CesareBorgia · 28/10/2023 18:56

Clocks that change themselves don't always do it bang on 2am, so you could end up waking an hour too early. Better than the other way round but use a manual clock, changed before you go to sleep, for certainty.

Goldenboysmum · 28/10/2023 18:57

At 2am, the clock will go back to 1am.

So an alarm set for 2.02 will go off 1 hour and 2 minutes later, at 2.02

So yes, that's fine

ClareBlue · 28/10/2023 19:02

The digital clocks change exactly at 2am. They go 01.59.59 to 01.00.00. 2.02 will alarm at proper 2.02, so it will be when you want to get up. The chances are you will wake up at 1.59 anyway with that inbuilt bizarre alarm system we seem to have when we have to get up at a certain time.

The first 1:59 or the second? 😁

Mine don't. One of mine changes at approx 2.45 and the other one at 6am. They are preset to check for a time signal at those times - OP might want to check the manual for her clock.

My dial-faced radio-controlled clock goes bonkers for a while when the clocks change - amusing to watch!

Lucanus · 28/10/2023 19:22

Can you set a timer on your phone to go off at the right time? E.g. set for 6 hours and start at 9pm (assuming you want 2am new time).

ClareBlue · 28/10/2023 19:23

That's strange one because I have watched mine change at 2am to 1am as I am often awake at that time and will be tonight, so will be watching. The phone picks up time zones in seconds of getting a signal in the new zones. As soon as you land on a plane. It's the signal that notifies now so it is instant. I wonder if none phone clocks are different. I assumed it would be a phone alarm.

Boomboom22 · 28/10/2023 19:25

Your phone will update automatically so don't adjust the alarm time just set as you need. If you mean a manual alarm set it for 3am.

TryAgainWithFeeling · 28/10/2023 19:25

I’d be tempted to also set a timer - work out how long it is until you have to get up and then set it for that length of time!

ClareBlue · 28/10/2023 19:30

Just checked online and there can be a difference between phones and other digital clocks that reset automatically. And if you want to add to the worry you can find plenty of stories where people got it wrong. Most involved missing some sleep but getting the going forward in spring wrong seemed to have had more serious consequences for some.

WhyCantIFigureThisOut · 28/10/2023 19:31

I'm relying on iPhone, which changes automatically and I (think) will be pretty reliably changing at 2:00 precisely...?

Yes, exactly.

A phone should be OK.

SquigglePigs · 28/10/2023 19:35

You could also set a countdown timer for X hours after you go to bed, just to be on the safe side!

I like this but wouldn't it just be a drain my battery??

Can you leave your phone on charge?

ThinWomansBrain · 28/10/2023 19:39

Have you got an Alexa?
You could set a timer for 8 hours or whatever- that won't be dependent on the actual time, just the time from when you set it.
(I think 😐)
Or presumably a timer rather than an alarm on your phone.

ThinWomansBrain · 28/10/2023 19:41

cross posted - got distracted so my half written post was open for a bit.

ClareBlue · 28/10/2023 19:41

Yes, phones seem to be fine. I read a very technical explanation as to how they pick up a signal that is precise and convert it to local time.
But...
It said this is fine aslong as you haven't messed with the default settings for the UTC. I became lost. But I think you would have to know how to mess with the settings. It seemed a tec thing not something anybody would do in general use.

No, I don’t think a timer uses a lot of battery. I’ve often left my stopwatch running for days when over forgotten to turn it off and I don’t notice any difference in batter usage.
