To think you ONLY go trick or treating on the 31st?

(Not a thread about whether you do or don’t agree with trick or treating in general.)

I honestly cannot get my head around people going trick or treating early (unless it’s an organised event like the shops in town doing a Halloween trail which happen all over half term and is different!)

But people knocking on residential doors this weekend?! No chance!

Is this madness happening anywhere else in the UK?

I haven’t come across it but if anyone comes to my door to trick or treat this weekend they can bugger off. I haven’t bought any sweets yet anyway

Ibravedaflood · 28/10/2023 11:48

We only 'pay out' on the 31st and we only go trick or treating the 31st...whatever night of the week that is. Door is either ignored or they get told to come back on Halloween..

Bluevelvetsofa · 28/10/2023 12:03

It’s yet another ‘tradition’ that’s been taken over by marketing. It used to be home made dress up and going round the neighbours. Now, houses are ‘decorated’ weeks in advance, you have to put a pumpkin outside, to add to the waste afterwards and the local FB page is very scathing of anyone who doesn’t join in.

Shops don’t now discriminate between Hallowe’en, fireworks and Christmas. They don’t know where to put all the stuff.

Blanketpolicy · 28/10/2023 12:09

Our town (in Scotland) does halloween on the last Friday of October, has done for 100s of years. I havent heard of anywhere else doing it on other days.

Noone does halloween on 31st here.

It works well because the kids are not in school the next day and halloween nights out in pubs are popular.

BitofaStramash · 28/10/2023 12:11

Absolutely not. Any guiser who tried it on would get turned away.

IncompleteSenten · 28/10/2023 12:14

YANBU

We don't seem very good in this country at having a celebration be a single day. We're more into festivals lasting a week or more for some reason.

Simonjt · 28/10/2023 12:18

Where we live trick or treating it always on the last Saturday in October, thats means very young children can still take part as they don’t have school the next day.

SuperNewMe · 28/10/2023 12:22

Not heard of that, but anyone knocking here would be told "it's not Halloween" and promptly get nothing.

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 28/10/2023 12:29

We only get them after school on the 31st of whatever day the 31st falls on . Clocks go back tonight so it'll be dark.about 4pm when the children go round afterschool on Tuesday. They never knock unless invited to by dressed up doors or a pumpkin outside
Ours are considerate

MatthewsMumFromTikTok · 28/10/2023 12:56

Last Friday of the month
Last Saturday of the month

Nah..... no way

31st at dusk onwards or not at all

MatthewsMumFromTikTok · 28/10/2023 12:57

And only until the sweets are gone. Then it's lights off, door locked

Whitewolf2 · 28/10/2023 13:02

Yep 31st only.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 28/10/2023 13:19

This has come up on our local face ache page. The majority want it to be Tuesday at certain times of the evening - and have posted their address and times they will be in for everyone to see …(public page and high crime area - head/bang/wall).
However as it’s halftime here, the rest are opting for various alternate days of the weekend and this week.
Supposedly only houses with decorations are meant to be visited. Add in the local youth element wanting to do mischief weekend and fireworks, it’s going to be ‘fun.’

HappiDaze · 28/10/2023 13:24

Yes only ever on the 31st

Gymmum82 · 28/10/2023 13:27

Only on the 31st here. I wouldn’t have any sweets any other time.
A work colleague was talking the other day about whether to go on the Saturday before or after Halloween as she was busy on the 31st. I said you can’t go on either Saturday. No one will have anything in!

AfterWeights · 28/10/2023 13:28

I'm sympathetic to parents who work and struggle to get out on a mid week night.

However i agree that you can't let it stretch on for days and days.

Sk8erboi · 28/10/2023 13:29

Definitely only the 31st here and anyone trying it on any other day will be told to sling their hook.

Having said that, I do remember as a child spending the weekend at a family friends house before Halloween and some children knocked trick or treating, stating that as it was due to rain on actual Halloween they were doing it early.
Well we promptly put some binbags on and off we popped to join in. We got TONS of sweets that night.
We were CF'ers of the highest order doing that but it paid off.

But they can go out earlier and still be in bed by 7:30.

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/10/2023 14:33

Every year we get at least 3/4 ask on our local Fb page are we t&t at the weekend rather than the weekday Halloween falls on

I replied along the lines it was only on the 31st - just like Xmas is 25 dec and not celebrated on 21 dec etc

Plus the lit pumpkin which means knock

Won't be any pumpkins lit for tonight

That's just weird

No one will be expecting knocks on the door

Halloween always falls on 31 so the clocks go back previous weekend so always dark

We go out 5/6 and leave a bowl saying gone t&t please take one

And then in 6/7 as dd6 likes to open the door and give bowl as well

7 pumpkin comes in and she goes to bed

I haven't heard of this. Would you mind sharing what region of Scotland?

gotomomo · 28/10/2023 15:04

As I haven't bought any treats yet they will be out of luck with me. My neighbourhood kids know they can call between nightfall and 8pm on 31st

Meggie2008 · 28/10/2023 15:06

@Blanketpolicy I think we're from the same town 😂😂

Meggie2008 · 28/10/2023 15:09

I'm guessing it's Kilmarnock. I thought it was quite widely known they were the anomaly.

Everyone else does the 31st but Kilmarnock to my knowledge, albeit limited as an English women who has never been, has always been the last Friday of October.
