To think you ONLY go trick or treating on the 31st?

(Not a thread about whether you do or don’t agree with trick or treating in general.)

I honestly cannot get my head around people going trick or treating early (unless it’s an organised event like the shops in town doing a Halloween trail which happen all over half term and is different!)

But people knocking on residential doors this weekend?! No chance!

Is this madness happening anywhere else in the UK?

I’m in the US and loads of suburban areas have “Halloween” on the Sunday afternoon before Halloween. I’m in a major city and it’s day of only here.

IAmMeThisIsI · 28/10/2023 15:20

Well, I live in what most consider a "poor area". Kids often knock doors early (expecting cash and if you present sweets, look at you like you just spat in their faces) around here.

This year though the payments from the government are due to start hitting banks on the 31st. If any of them knock doors before then they're going to be in for a rude awakening.

Maybe the parents know/control when the kids begin knocking doors. This year we'll see what happens. Either way, I can't afford to and won't be answering mine.

Nevermind31 · 28/10/2023 15:23

In our neighbourhood it is organised for 2 hours on Sunday. Beautifully decorated houses and businesses, all lit up, a couple of hundred kids all dressed up, and two hours later it all disappears. It’s lovely. And wouldn’t open the door after it

pigsDOfly · 28/10/2023 15:26

Well most people have had their halloween decorations up for a few weeks here so maybe they think trick or treating should last for several weeks.

My town's bonfire 'night' was over a week ago and the christmas decorations on people's houses usually go up immediately after halloween.

For me it would rather take the specialness and excitement out of everything in the way that I experienced it as a child, but each to their own.

Killieween · 28/10/2023 15:48

I am guessing you live in Kilmarnock?!?!

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/10/2023 14:38

That's just weird

No one will be expecting knocks on the door

Halloween always falls on 31 so the clocks go back previous weekend so always dark

We go out 5/6 and leave a bowl saying gone t&t please take one

And then in 6/7 as dd6 likes to open the door and give bowl as well

7 pumpkin comes in and she goes to bed

It isn’t weird. It is always held on the last Saturday here, so everyone who takes part expects knocks as its a decades old arrangement.

Londiniumrocks · 28/10/2023 16:44

31st only. If kids came knocking tonight we for don’t have anything to give them.

round here it’s go to the houses that have a pumpkin lit or decorations up only. Pretty much our entire neighbourhood…

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/10/2023 17:12

Why is is different in Scotland

So if the last Saturday it could be sat the 25th if 31st falls on Friday 31

Just seems weird - Easter moves. No other dates do

Halloween is 31 oct
Bonfire night 5 Nov
Xmas day 25 dec

It's not different in Scotland.

It's different in one small area of Scotland.

Lucyintheskywithlove · 28/10/2023 17:18

Only the 31st here.

I remember when we were kids, my mum used to tell them to come back on the right night if they came earlier. 😳

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 28/10/2023 17:19

I'm in Ireland and in my area it's always 31st. That said my neighbour sent a msg around to say they are going away that day and is there any chance we could indulge her little boy on Sat evening instead. She offered to drop round sweets in advance if we had nothing so I'll be expecting him soon!

TheChosenTwo · 28/10/2023 17:19

Well I’ve got the sweets and chocolates now so if anyone knocks they can have it. Don’t have a pumpkin etc out though as we haven’t bothered this year for the first time. I’ll stick one of the Halloween decs out on the 31st so people know they can knock.

Toomanysquishmallows · 28/10/2023 17:22

I haven’t got anything in yet , so anyone knocking will unfortunately be disappointed.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 28/10/2023 17:27

Local unwritten rule is 31st only, from sundown to 8.30, decorated houses only. Works fine. The little ones all turn out from 5-6, and then the great lanky teens after 7. The one year I "sold out" by 7.30 I took the lights in and no one bothered us

Can I share a lovely Halloween story from last year? Was discussing going Trick or Treating with a customer (cleaner) and her dh - both in their 80's..they said they were disappointed they never get callers. I said the unspoken rule was only knock at houses that had decorations up. They asked if we would call round . So we knocked.. 9 of us and 2 ddogs in costumes.. Even the ddogs. We were ushered into a tiny front room. Fire ablaze and the heating on full! The dh came through carrying a tray of drinks and goodies.. We were overwhelmed tbh. When we left they thanked us for sharing out Halloween with them!. Have been invited back this year and can't wait!

Cosyblankets · 28/10/2023 17:43

I don't decorate.
I will buy sweets for Halloween but only for on the day. I'm not organised enough to get them before.

SiblingFights · 28/10/2023 17:47

Lovely story @Ibravedaflood

fluffypotatoes · 28/10/2023 18:00

It's like trying to celebrate Christmas 3 days before. Its silly

BashfulClam · 28/10/2023 18:02

Blanketpolicy · 28/10/2023 12:09

Our town (in Scotland) does halloween on the last Friday of October, has done for 100s of years. I havent heard of anywhere else doing it on other days.

Noone does halloween on 31st here.

It works well because the kids are not in school the next day and halloween nights out in pubs are popular.

killieween? You lot ate weird lol.

BashfulClam · 28/10/2023 18:04

Blanketpolicy · 28/10/2023 17:27

Mothers/Fathers day dates move.

Edited

It’s only one town in Scotland that I know of. I live a few miles from the town that does and we have always observed 31st.

CowboyJoanna · 28/10/2023 18:05

I don't open the door to trick or treaters, nor are my kids allowed to celebrate halloween. We don't want to Americanise them.

Otterseatpuffinsdontthey · 28/10/2023 18:17

@CowboyJoanna
"Trick or Treat" is American.
Pumpkins are American
The tradition of Hallowe'en is not.
Look it up.

Merrilydancing · 28/10/2023 18:22

@Otterseatpuffinsdontthey and we thank the Americans for removing neep carving and giving us pumpkins!
