Alfie Archie Albie Blakie Bertie Denny Ellie Evie Edie Georgie Lenny Ralphie Ronnie Reggie Vinny.

Today I came across a Jeffie. Why?!

If want to give you kid an old fashioned name, then name it Alfred, Eleanor, Leonard or Vincent. Or Jeffrey.

Added to the naff-ness of it is the fact that when that child starts school, he’s going to be one in at least half a dozen others with the same name.

I just find it it very unoriginal and effortless to give your child a “trendy” name that 50% of parents seem to also be naming their child. I’m assuming they think it’s quirky or cute but I can’t be the only person who thinks it’s naff and tasteless.

I get sometimes it’s to honour a relative. My grandad was called Bernard, but if I wanted to name my son after him I wouldn’t name him Bernie. I’d call him Bernard. As that was my grandads name.

It sounds to me that OP comes from a place of little understanding of names and language.... or a place of bitterness.

Triplixate · 28/10/2023 13:16

Your logic is so muddled here…

  1. Your thread title is specifically about ie/y suffix names being distasteful then you’re confused as to why people are focusing on that
  2. However, YOU can call your child a name ending in that sound cos yours is somehow ok
  3. It’s also ok if they have a “proper” legal name even if they’re never known by it
  4. It’s ok if it’s Molly even though that’s a diminutive in its own right

Can you not see all the contradictions? But I guess it’s ok cos your child has a “proper” name and everyone else is silly, right? Couldn’t possibly be you.

PinkLemons99 · 28/10/2023 13:16

I’m an old ‘un with an ie name.

It’s nothing new and trendy at all. Maybe if you read some decent literature, instead of the Daily Mail you’d realise that? 😂

HorseySurprise · 28/10/2023 12:52

Nannie was her actual name?

Yes. Nan / Nana / Nannie all normal old school shortenings of Anne.

SamAndEIIa · 28/10/2023 13:02

No, I think you are clutching at straws now that you have realised that you can’t actually make a coherent point without contradicting yourself.

well you can have your opinion and I can have mine 😊

Katie Hopkins, that you?

WimbyAce · 28/10/2023 13:18

For the record my name ends in a y as does 1 daughter and the other is i, all full names.

WiIIow · 28/10/2023 13:19

OP reading your other posts about how you're feeling low and potentially depressed, it's possibly not a good idea to fixate on something so trivial. It may be better for your to channel your energy into something that's good and positive for your mind instead of criticising other people's choice of names.

Giveuprobot · 28/10/2023 13:19

@moonseas In many ways, I feel you've missed a trick by not using Blodwyn ap Moonseas. Hell of a name!

Tiredalwaystired · 28/10/2023 13:21

Where do you stand on the name “Barry” out of interest?

FKATondelayo · 28/10/2023 13:21

Bertie Ahern
Teddy Prendergast
Teddy Sheringham
Teddy Roosevelt
Alfie Boe
Willie Whitelaw
Dickie Davies

Their careers all scuppered by having a cutesy name. #sad

SallyWD · 28/10/2023 13:22

I know what you mean although I really like some ie/y names, for example I love Annie.
I know three sisters called Evie, Gracie and Janie. I personally would much prefer Eve, Grace and Jane.

Honestly the balls on you to say the names you listed are too popular and to then admit your DD is called Poppy 😂 Poppy! Are you kidding me?? It’s been a top 25 girls name since 2009!

I hate names for little girls that sound too cutesy and infantilising when they’ll spend the majority of their lives as adults. For example…Poppy. A 50 year old Poppy sounds silly to me.

EatYourVegetables · 28/10/2023 13:23

It’s not new but it’s yuck. It’s infantilising. It’s extra yuck because so many people do it.

duchiebun · 28/10/2023 13:23

You need to get out more!

Flower names for girls are very common where I am & a bit 00s but it’s your choice.

InsomniacA · 28/10/2023 13:24

Mary
Cecily
Emily
Amy
Felicity
Dorothy

These are hardly trendy or naff.

Try harder, OP.

Hibye23289 · 28/10/2023 13:24

Jayden, Brayden, Okayden

Jeffie?? Would you like a jeffie cake

Then call your children Eve, Grace and Jane 🤷🏼‍♀️

I’m plenty do, we are all entitled to opinions. I have a Poppy which does indeed end in a y but that is its original spelling. I didn’t change it to Poppie to bring it up to date or “different” or whatever. Then I have a Georgia and an Elliot. I don’t mind if people don’t like them.

They're just trends, some people will like them, some don't. I'm not keen on the trend of calling children surnames - half the boys in my child's class are called Spencer, Cooper, Jackson, Elliot etc and I always think it must make registration sound like a 1930s boarding school!

PortalooSunset · 28/10/2023 13:27

My dc have 'proper' names, as you put it. They're referred to by 'ie' names by their chums (even though the number of syllables is still the same). Also by the 'ie' version of their surname, as was their dad before them. Slightly miffed that mine can't really be shortened tbh 😂

duchiebun · 28/10/2023 13:27

Also, those bemoaning people for not choosing “unusual” names, please consider the impact of an unusual name on your children.

I have an unusual name and I hated it growing up.

I had an unusual name in that it was foreign as i’m a 2nd gen immigrant. Never bothered me in the slightest. I did grew up in a multicultural part of London & regularly still hear names I’m not aware of. I don’t understand how people don’t encounter this but I guess some people have very small lives.

Monkeypopcorn · 28/10/2023 13:27

My aunt used to laugh at all my friends and I being y/ie names when I was at school 20 years ago. I think 'a' names are much more popular these days especially with girls.

greglet · 28/10/2023 13:30

@CentrifugalBumblePuppy Helen and Nelly?

Margaret and Molly?

Gwendolyn and Wendy?

Sarah and Sally?

duchiebun · 28/10/2023 13:31

Being called Albie or Teddy or Bertie will sound pretty silly if you go and work in the States etc.

Er have you seen American names?

I mean Elon Musk which sounds like a name from a cheesy romance novel is the richest man in the world.
