Alfie Archie Albie Blakie Bertie Denny Ellie Evie Edie Georgie Lenny Ralphie Ronnie Reggie Vinny.

Today I came across a Jeffie. Why?!

If want to give you kid an old fashioned name, then name it Alfred, Eleanor, Leonard or Vincent. Or Jeffrey.

Added to the naff-ness of it is the fact that when that child starts school, he’s going to be one in at least half a dozen others with the same name.

I just find it it very unoriginal and effortless to give your child a “trendy” name that 50% of parents seem to also be naming their child. I’m assuming they think it’s quirky or cute but I can’t be the only person who thinks it’s naff and tasteless.

I get sometimes it’s to honour a relative. My grandad was called Bernard, but if I wanted to name my son after him I wouldn’t name him Bernie. I’d call him Bernard. As that was my grandads name.

ie and y ending names aren’t a new thing, I’m in my late 40’s and have a few friends who’s names end in both

Ds has an ie ending name however it is a full name and not a nickname. He’s 22 and we have only ever met 2 other people with his name and 1 dog! 😂

den, dyn, dan ending of names are more common where we live! Every send new baby seems to have those names.

Itwasamemo3 · 28/10/2023 11:59

So I work at a care home and we have Dorrie,Kitty,Josie , Kenny,Bertie, Archie ,Tommy,Lottie and at least another 10 residents . These lovely people are in their 80s/ 90s ,so no , it is not a recent craze !

sangriapeople · 28/10/2023 12:02

I have an Alfie and back when I chose it, there were none. It then became hugely popular which I hate! There were no other Alfie's my sons age through school and college.

You're right though, I'd never call him Alfie now and would have gone down the Alfred route, probably.

PenguinRainbows · 28/10/2023 12:02

I’m sure people hate the baby names you’ve picked too Confused

feelingnotbelieving · 28/10/2023 12:02

I’ll add, because I forgot to in my OP, that if a parent calls their child Alfred and Alfred is on the birth certificate etc and then as he grows up gets shortened to Alfie that’s ok. Because his name is actually Alfred. If his relatives or mates shorten it to Alfie then that’s fine. Although still two syllables so not really shortening it… Just call him Alfred or Alf if you want to shorten it.

@modgepodge it’s ok if it’s already the full name. Unless it’s one that should end in a Y and you’ve changed it to an ie “to be different”. Still doesn’t bother me as much as the Archie/Alfie/Albie thing tho. So like Lucie and Mollie doesn’t bother me so much because there are full names, but still any change it from y to ie? Molly and Lucy are nice as they are/ As far as I’m aware they aren’t shortened versions, I could be wrong tho. My eldest is called Poppy but I would find changing it to Poppie distasteful, as there’s no need other than to try to be different or quirky.

Why not just call your daughter Pop, since you hate the “y” ending so much?

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 28/10/2023 11:38

Blakie?
(I’ll get you Butler!)

😂😂😂😂

Jewelspun · 28/10/2023 12:04

I quite like Frosty the Snowman and Lassie.

Exactly. One of my children have a “ie” ending name which has a non “ie” ending alternative (think Alfred/Alfie) - they were called after someone born in 1930.

PotOfViolas · 28/10/2023 12:06

Have to say I prefer Ronnie, Reggie and Archie to Ronald, Reginald and Archibald.

wheresmysandwich · 28/10/2023 12:07

My cousin has 2 DC's with names that usually end Y, but cousin has chosen to spell one of them ie and the other ee. They just look like they are spelt wrong and it annoys me a bit writing the names in birthday cards etc, but it will become normal over time as I get used to it (plus it's not really my business to get upset about what she named her kids)

feelingnotbelieving · 28/10/2023 12:07

@Itwasamemo3 yes but they were most likely christened/named on their birth certificate as the full names. Kenneth Charlotte Archibald etc. To be the alfies and Archie’s of the country should be oldies. As they are old names. There were no Alfie’s or Archie’s or albies or Reggie’s when I was at school.

Is Poppy the diminutive? Assume your DD's full name is Popsicle.

SinnerBoy · 28/10/2023 12:07

My daughter has a best friend Charlotte, who goes by Lottie. My cousin's daughter is, too, but she prefers Charlie.

Imagine making a post about how much you hate y/ie ending names, then admitting your child is called Poppy 🤣🤣 honestly get a grip.

All these names you are saying are ok....no they are all ok because people can name their child whatever they want, they don't give a shit what some randomer on the Internet thinks.

Names are cyclical - your own daughter is called Poppy which is a very common name and ends in the same cutesy sound that you apparently hate, yet I bet you didn’t go to school with many Poppy’s.

There are two Poppy’s in my child’s class of 25. My child is the only person in her school with her name.

ShippingNews · 28/10/2023 12:10

Nothing new about trendy names ! I'm 64 and remember that there were 7 Craigs in my son's school class . I bet all those parents thought they were being original when their little Craigs were born !

Personally I'd find something else to get annoyed about - they are just names.

So is Albie. From the Latin Alba or Albus.

SinnerBoy · 28/10/2023 12:12

Pop-Tart, I love it!

So you don't like unoriginal names and you don't like different or quirky names..

I'm struggling to find names that don't fit in one or the other category...

And now, basically nobody calls their child Craig. But in 30+ years, when all those 7 little Craig’s from your sons class become grandpas, there will be a wave of baby Craig’s again.
