Embarrassed By Weight Gain

Aquarius1234 · 28/10/2023 00:16

I was weighed recently and shocked I was 2 stone heavier.
I was embarrassed I'd underestimated my weight for maybe two or three years.
No idea how quickly I piled it on.
I didn't cry but shock and laughter at my scales saying the wrong thing!

Lots of people won't have scales in the house and then when they finally get weighed, they're shocked at how much they've gained.

It happens, what matters is how you deal with it (if indeed you want to).

Aquarius1234 · 28/10/2023 00:25

I did have scales that I had rarely used, but I don't think they were every accurate!
I'd basically lied to the health people I was a completely different weight.
Perhaps they knew anyhow.. 😳
I just stupidly thought it was a good guess.

No one else shocked at recent weight gain...

Im with yoy OP. I've piled it on the past 1.5years. I struggled with anorexia in the past and the weight gain is a massive trigger. Just how much I managed to pack on has surprised me too. Am actively trying not to be too upset over it though, I don't want to fall into bad behaviours again.

Mercurial123 · 28/10/2023 10:55

I put on a stone, and my clothes were uncomfortable. If I put on two stones, I couldn't get them on. I'm surprised you didn't notice unless you live in those tent dresses MN seems to love so much.

AtomicBlondeRose · 28/10/2023 10:57

That was me in June. Just couldn’t believe how much I actually weighed! Started watching my diet and exercising then and am now back down to my fighting weight and much fitter and in better shape than ever. Clothes look way better and I have more energy too! So totally doable and I’ve found I actually enjoy exercising with weights.

Depends on weight and height
It takes about 3 stone for me to drop a dress size so no I wouldn't notice much

Nonsense. I've always hovered between 9-9.5st. Wore the same pair of jeans for years. Continued wearing the same jeans and started to notice they were a bit more snug, but they still absolutely fit (no overhang on the waist etc).

I eventually weighed myself and I was 11st 2!

I've lost the weight and still wear the same jeans...

Squirrelsnut · 28/10/2023 11:22

I can gain 3 stone and still fit my (non tent) clothes. I'm tall and large built, so the fat can be spread thinly over a large area, IYSWIM

NoraLuka · 28/10/2023 11:23

This was me a couple of years ago. I never weighed myself and started working from home so I could eat random snacks throughout the day. After a couple of years of this I weighed about 1.5 stone more than before, but it was very gradual and clothes were tighter but more or less ok. I didn’t really notice until I went on holiday and found it impossible to keep up with the DC and DP on a hike. That wasn’t just because of the weight but it didn’t help, and I was so embarrassed that they had to keep stopping to wait for me. It took at least another year before I did anything about it though.

I'd say the same about your post. How can anyone not notice they've put on two stone?

TomAllensWhiskMic · 28/10/2023 12:20

The same thing happened to me OP. I didn't have scales in the house so didn't know my weight.

I knew I'd put weight on, but underestimated how much by a whole stone. I was weighed at the GP as part of a health check, and was shocked. I also had slightly high cholesterol. But it was the incentive I needed do something about it.

I now own scales 🤣 and have lost the weight.

I genuinely didnt. I even made a thread about how it was weird I hadn't noticed, probably under a different name, and loads of posters had experienced the same.

I don't feel 2.5 stone lighter than I was then either (now a pretty steady 8st 10).

I can't speak for anyone else, but on the odd occasion I noticed, I just thought I was having a fat day/might be time of the month/bit bloated... But I didn't look in the mirror and think, Duh Sparkl, you've obviously put on 2 stone.

All I can say is the scales and tape measure don't lie, but I can quite easily lie to myself apparently Grin

prettygardens · 28/10/2023 12:21

Are you sure the scales are accurate? Otherwise why didn't your clothes feel tighter or when buying new stuff notice that you've gone up a couple of sizes?

When I gain weight I really feel it, just by a digging waistband or the fact that I feel bloated and meh.

Notmetoo · 28/10/2023 12:23

I refuse to weigh myself. I know I have put weight in but I'm trying to do something about it I'm just basing it on how my clothes feel

PinkArt · 28/10/2023 12:42

Two stone over a couple of years. Say a stone a year. For ease say a pound a month. That's 3500 extra calories over a month, roughly 100 a day. A banana is 100 cals. It's easily done without noticing the small creep each month, especially when it doesn't take unhealthy habits, just a small amount over maintenance calories.

I used the scales at home after the appointment and they were completely different... lol
Then went and purchased some new scales.
Put them on the rug, still said very different weight..
Then I put them on a flat floor and low and behold the same as in the health centre!
I knew I'd put on weight but not to that extent etc
And I was being careful in the weeks leading up to being weighed lol

I don't have scales in the house.

I have a pair of jeans that fit nicely. Too tight = exercise more. Too loose = more cake.

I've gained 3 kg recently but I've taken up weight lifting so still a size 10. Just less fat and more muscle!

Measuring your waist with a tape measure often means more than just your mass in kg.

tobee · 28/10/2023 16:23

Err clothes often stretch with time. Even jeans. It's not the best indicator. I've discovered this myself

CompanyPlease · 28/10/2023 16:28

I have gained 2 stone and really aware of it though, I've never been this weight other than when I was pregnant, I hate it, I'm so embarrassed seeing how I look in photos. I don't know why I didn't just lose a few lbs when I knew I'd put on half a stone, I always have in the past.

Obv no one says anything but I am mortified. Also now got to the stage where I would need a whole new wardrobe if I don't lose weight, I've lost 9lb and you can't even see I've lost weight, that's how much over my normal weight I am 😔

TroglodytesTroglodytes · 28/10/2023 16:35

Agree that it depends on the type of clothes. I’ve just dug out my winter clothes and notice that I can’t get the fitted jackets with a zip done up😊. No problems with the stretchy woolly jumpers or jeans containing elastic…..

sadsack78 · 28/10/2023 16:59

I feel your pain!

I've had a miserable year and gained about fifteen extra pounds that I am now trying to shift. It can creep on pretty slowly and when you see yourself every day, it's can be hard to notice an extra pound or two until it's half a stone plus.

All you can do is be compassionate with yourself and take an honest look at your daily habits. Compare what you are doing now vs how you ate/ exercised when you were your ideal weight.

(obvs this advice only works if the weight gain is purely from your eating or lack of movement- if weight gain is from illness or hormonal changes, it won't help to the same extent).

I went from 78kg (not light to begin with) to 91kg during covid. I’m trying for a while now to lose it but post dealing with a very stressful long term situation and landing in peri menopause there is no movement yet. I feel your pain @Aquarius1234

Yes I'm around the same.
I was on steroids earlier on in the year. Also blood pressure medication, no idea if that makes you gain weight over a year.

Definitely medication is going to cause issues I would expect. It is also so difficult to lose weight as you age. I train a lot 4-5 times per week and that has almost no effect whereas when I was younger I’d have lost weight.
