To think I’m going to spend the night throwing up?

Just ate a half a lamb burger - homemade with mince- only to find it was pink in the middle. Left the rest obvs but am now wondering if my weekend of plans is going to be out? I know nobody can say for sure but wondering what the chances are.

Ive had it before with beef and not been too worried but lamb seems more dicey? 🙈

You'll be fine.

Bearpawk · 27/10/2023 18:30

You'll be fine

Username6445 · 27/10/2023 18:30

I’m no expert but I’m thinking since you ate the cooked bits and not the pink bits, it’ll be ok…??

HomeatRoseCottage · 27/10/2023 18:30

It’s fine, very unlikely to make you sick.

Housechat · 27/10/2023 18:30

You’ll be fine. Beef burgers shouldn’t be eaten pink either technically but I eat it a bit pink all the time.

nibblessquibbles · 27/10/2023 18:31

Was it fresh mince or a freshly bought product? I've eaten all sorts of raw meats over different countries .. all fine. The quality and freshness of the product is the main thing. If that was OK you'll be fine

Embelline · 27/10/2023 18:33

@Username6445 i wasn’t really
lookinf at it when I was eating and had definitely eaten some of the pink by the time I realised. DC had eaten theirs by this time so couldn’t check theirs.

hopefully the majority vote will prove to be correct. My uni room mate used to eat raw sausages (vom) and was fine and pork seems way more risky so I’m taking heart from that too.

hmm not sure how fresh as it was a hello fresh meal (ha) that arrived on Tuesday and has been in the fridge since but was well within the use by date

There's a tiny chance there was some bad bacteria on the mince, a tinier chance it made it inside the burger, a tinier chance still that that bit stayed pink and the bacteria survived, and an even tinier chance that it will then make you ill, IF you even ate that bit. Relax OP.

MumInBrussels · 27/10/2023 18:38

I'm sure I've been given the choice of having lamb served rosé (pink - the equivalent of medium for beef) at restaurants here in Belgium and in France. So pink lamb can't inherently be a food safety problem, else it wouldn't be allowed. The mince bit might complicate things, but they eat raw beef mince here (I have never been able to make myself try it, I just can't!) and it doesn't appear to kill people routinely. I will keep my fingers crossed that you're fine!

Housechat · 27/10/2023 18:39

I think, although happy to be corrected, you are more likely to get ill from poor hand hygiene when prepping/serving than the food itself given we have fairly strict food standards and it wasn’t off. So assuming you washed your hands I think you will be fine!

Vinrouge4 · 27/10/2023 19:07

You will be fine. The french eat lamb pink or even bloody all the time and they seem to all still be standing. Lamb or beef rare are perfectly fine. Chicken and pork not so good.

Remagirl · 27/10/2023 19:28

Lots of people eat lamb rare. If it was pork I'd worry.

Createausername1970 · 27/10/2023 19:33

Judging by what I've seen on MasterChef, lamb is fine pink. I personally prefer it cooked through, but apparently I must be a heathen 🤣🤣

TheresaBouvey · 27/10/2023 19:35

Lamb and beef are fine, delicious even pink

Pork and chicken however must be cooked through

You'll be fine

Torganer · 27/10/2023 19:36

Don’t most people eat lamb pink? I thought that was how you cook it? I always cook beef burgers rare and have never had an issue, but I also eat raw beef and raw fish and have never been ill from that.

Torganer · 27/10/2023 19:37

Also pork can be eaten pink, it’s quite common in Spain and in Spanish restaurants in the UK.

Eating cuts of certain meat rare is fine, it’s when it’s minced you shouldn’t. I did listen to someone explaining why once but it’s not sunk in. Saying that I do eat beef burgers medium and never had an issue.

QueSyrahSyrah · 27/10/2023 20:03

@Housechat It's because the mincing process can mean that bacteria that might be sat on the outside of the meat gets transferred into the middle and then perhaps not thoroughly cooked.

On a steak or other complete cut of meat the outside will be in contact with the heat so any bacteria is killed off. The inside didn't have contact bacteria in the first place.

It's still a very small risk though, a pink beef or lamb burger is very likely to be completely fine.

MereDintofPandiculation · 27/10/2023 20:07

Lamb and beef are eaten pink. Pork has to be well cooked because of tapeworm, chicken because of salmonella. Basically it’s ok to eat herbivores. Omnivores and carnivores are more likely to share bugs with us.

Ginmonkeyagain · 27/10/2023 20:09

Meh. I eat lamb pink, rare even, all the time.

Not dead yet.

Housechat · 27/10/2023 20:09

@QueSyrahSyrah Thank you, that makes sense 😊

Greenshake · 27/10/2023 20:25

Sorry to do a sidestep @Embelline but your former roommate used to eat raw sausages? Seriously?

VeridicalVagabond · 27/10/2023 20:36

You'll probably be fine, I've had lamb burgers pink plenty of times.

Did we have the same roommate btw? Pal of mine used to eat raw sausage, and bacon. Said it was nicer with the "chew". Fuckin alien.

steppemum · 27/10/2023 20:58

Torganer · 27/10/2023 19:37

it is never advised to eat pork pink, as it is the main carrier of human tapeworm.

and as pp said, chicken must never be pink because of salmonella.
