We’ve just been in Smyths and someone on the radio just said that trick or treating starts tonight… it’s not a full weekend thing now is it? Ready to take my 2 year old out for the first time on Tuesday and just checking I haven’t somehow missed something 🙈🤷‍♀️

Some people don't want to take their kids out on a school night so will go this weekend

Those people will be disappointed when no one answers their door !

Of course it's Tuesday but seriously... why would anyone take a 2 year old trick or treating? Surely they are not going to be asking to go out ... so assume it's just for the parent's benefit ...... why? Hmm

Maybe because their older siblings want to go and they’re a smidge too young to stay home alone… And my 2.5YO definitely knows what Halloween and trick or treating is- probably nursery and older sister putting him up to it though. We go out at 5.30, home for 6 - fine for a school night because yes it’s the 31st and only the 31st.

Either that, or unless they're going to only go to their own houses (which could work) they're more likely to get a load of people that haven't bought the sweets yet and have a load of disappointed children.

No one around here decorates until the 31st, without that, how do you know what houses to knock at?!

I’m guessing it’s being advertised locally if it’s a big event. I bought my sweets ages ago when I saw some on offer. Like fuck would I buy more though because cheeky people want to go twice.

GrimGrinningGhosts · 27/10/2023 19:52

One of our local FB Groups is collating addresses that will be offering sweets over the weekend.

Halloween is the 31st. And anyone turning up before will absolutely be told to 'see you next Tuesday'

Haha I took my 17 month old for the first time three years ago. She absolutely loved dressing up and knocking on doors for sweets. She got the hang of it pretty quickly, putting them into her little bag and looking out for decorated houses/pumpkins. İt was covid so very quiet and a lot of houses just had bowls. İt was the cutest thing for me too, giving her a little challenge. She wasn't exposed to sweets much back then so we put them away and just had the odd one here and there, but she's ever since said that Halloween is her favourite time of the year.

hasbeenbean · 27/10/2023 20:31

We had someone that had full on dressed up and makeupped, brought their child out in pouring rain in the car, driving round hunting down houses decorated, last night.
DH opened the door before he realised so we felt guilted into giving what we’ve got prepared for Tuesday but only on the day for me.

Guardian12 · 27/10/2023 20:34

Halloween is a fixed date! That’s how it works.

Ragwort · 27/10/2023 20:51

InThe but the Op has implied that she wants to take her 2 year old ... no mention of older siblings. I think it's an utterly bizarre thing to take such a young child ... but I've managed to avoid ever taking my DC trick or treating ... never encouraged it and he didn't show any interest until he was 9, DH took him & DS actually said 'what a waste of time just to get a few free sweets' .. and never went again. (That was over 10 years ago).

I am not a total kill joy, always stock up on plenty of sweets for the local DC ... and feign excitement when they knock on the door.

ToddlerSAHM · 27/10/2023 21:45

@Ragwort he loves sweets and people so why not? If he doesn’t enjoy it we will go home but I think he will 🤷‍♀️

Strictly one night only for begging at strangers homes.

( i hate Halloween- I just don’t get it , you wouldn’t let your kid go to strangers house and ask for sweets any other time! )

DaftyLass · 27/10/2023 21:51

My opinion may not count as I'm from Canada vs UK, but Halloween is a one day opportunity.
If the weather is great, wonderful, if it's shitty, not many go out, but that's it, it's a one shot deal each year.
Exceptions made for Halloween parties the weekend before , but those are in on location, not the trick or treating around town part.

Exactly - it’s just an evening family walk, there’s loads to look at, kids get sweets and adults say hi to the neighbours. Not weird at all that you might want to take a 2YO. Only weird if you try to do it any night that isn’t the 31st. My eldest loved and was fully aware of Halloween at 2 but we did live in the US at the time so hard to miss it over there!

purpleme12 · 27/10/2023 22:59

I started taking mine at 2.
I think that's when they're old enough for it.

A friend asked today which day we were going as they were working night of 31st so needed to go another day 😅

TamzinGrey · 29/10/2023 18:42

It's Sunday 29th and we've just had a bloke pushing a pushchair with 4 young kids trotting along behind him going up everyone's drives to their front doors looking for Halloween decs.
At least he wasn't knocking on doors that weren't decorated, but I listened to it on my security camera feed and the poor kids were saying "No sweets here Daddy" and one of them was actually crying.
Why in hell's name has Halloween suddenly become a moveable feast?

Oh no. What was he thinking, I haven't even got any sweets in yet and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

ToddlerSAHM · 31/10/2023 21:15

We went tonight and my 2 year old loved it and now has enough sweets to last him months 🥰
