We’ve just been in Smyths and someone on the radio just said that trick or treating starts tonight… it’s not a full weekend thing now is it? Ready to take my 2 year old out for the first time on Tuesday and just checking I haven’t somehow missed something 🙈🤷‍♀️

It's our half term now. But i agree, if it's a school night get them out and home by half 6/7 and it's fine.

Our school did the Halloween disco last week ! 🤔

frecklejuice · 27/10/2023 15:18

Totally one night only round here!

skyeisthelimit · 27/10/2023 15:18

Definitely 31 October around here.

Anyone going out before that just because it suits them better is ridiculous. You can either do 31 Oct, or don't do it.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 27/10/2023 15:21

We don’t decorate but do get some sweets in just in case of a knock at the door. We would not be ready before the 31st and would be a bit confused to be honest.

God can you imagine having randoms keep knocking on your door over a few evenings?! And expecting to be given stuff! I hope it doesn't evolve into this.

That would piss me off royally.

Couple of hours on the right night is quite enough! 👻

Fixesplease · 27/10/2023 15:23

Nope. Only Trick or Treating on actual Halloween here, anyone knocks on my door tonight they'll be disappointed!

My primary aged child has a Halloween school party thng tonight but no trick or treating till Tuesday.

KenAddams · 27/10/2023 15:24

In Kilmarnock it's always been the last Friday something to do with pay way back then

MinnieMountain · 27/10/2023 15:26

As PP have said, it will be dark by 5.30pm on Tuesday. I’m taking DS straight from the childminder at 5.15.

SpringIntoChaos · 27/10/2023 15:26

I had a group of children knocking on my door last night 'trick or treating'. I told them to come back next Tuesday 🤣😨🤦‍♀️

Some people don't want to take their kids out on a school night so will go this weekend

They're likely to be out of luck then. Why on earth would anyone inflict disappointment of that kind on their DC?

This always gets me!

I love Halloween, the decorations, the pumpkins, the parties. But i HATE Trick or Treating with a passion.

I want to decorate my house outside but can't because of this rule 😂

The rule here is that you can only knock if the pumpkins are lit. Decorations are fine

TomatoSandwiches · 27/10/2023 15:30

Decorations go up on the morning of 31st ( not many ) sweets get handed out night of and that's it.

Our solution to this is to put a bowl of sweets out and a sign saying please take one but don't knock. We do it because we have babies/toddlers who go to bed super early. It generally works quite well!

Some people don't want to take their kids out on a school night so will go this weekend

And some people don't want their doorbell ringing tonight!

I love Halloween, but won't be giving treats until Tuesday and wouldn't be happy at having it happening over several nights.

EvilElsa · 27/10/2023 15:45

I've got absolutely nothing in for trick or treaters so they will be disappointed if they come this weekend. Haven't even done my pumpkin yet! It's only on Tuesday as far as I'm concerned.

evtheria · 27/10/2023 15:47

I'm quite surprised at people being able to do it early (on the 31st)... when DS was 4 it was his first year trick or treating and we had just moved to the area (so didn't know what was the norm). I dutifully took him out while it was still slightly light, perhaps 6? And had someone tell me it was too early! Quickly realised we were the only ones out so went back home until 7, when we saw everyone else out (little and older). Despite lots of new families moving into the area people still don't start until it's dark.

rainbowsparkle28 · 27/10/2023 15:48

You are not misunderstanding, as far as I have ever known only trick or treating on actual day of Halloween / 31st October i.e. this year on Tuesday.

🤮

Catsanfan · 27/10/2023 15:50

FFS. If anyone comes here they will promptly turned away until Tuesday evening

TheYearOfSmallThings · 27/10/2023 15:51

You can only trick or treat on Halloween because the veil between the physical and spiritual worlds is at its thinnest on that night. It really does not matter whether it is a school night or not, because of the veil thing but also because all the sweets are gone by 6pm anyway Grin.

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 27/10/2023 14:49

Some people don't want to take their kids out on a school night so will go this weekend

And will be told to go away and come back on Tuesday by anyone with any sense.

It's not a moveable feast, it's October 31st.

EasternStandard · 27/10/2023 15:52

Yes here too

Spirro · 27/10/2023 15:52

I put the decorations out for a week so the kids can enjoy them. I only expect trick or treaters on the 31st though.

Halloween is not a ‘cosy’ celebration. 🤨 And endless knocking on the door would drive me mad.

I’m glad we get very few people knocking (no decs) so there are more sweets left for me.
