To not want a dog?

DH ganged up on me with dcs today saying 'Mummy doesn't want a dog' when DD started pleading. She's 7 and DS is 10 so they won't be looking after it.
We have a smallish house and a tiny garden and both work full time.
DH says he'll look after it but I get up at 05:45 and leave the house at 06:30 while DH is still in bed. If we had a dog it would want feeding/walking/attention as soon as I got up. I also get home first with dcs so situation would be repeated at the end of the day.
I don't like animals, don't like dog poo and don't like the restrictions they will cause.
AIB selfish?

Start with something smaller like a guinea pig (great 1st pet) and see how they get on with that 1st.

Think about getting rats.
Seriously, unless you are phobic, they are fabulous dog substitutes, Just as much character but fit into a busy life much more easily. Must keep them in pairs or groups though.

Rats?

Oh, god, something just as vile, but at least you can put rats in a cadge or let them out in some gutter when you no longer want them .

Good for you for being realistic about what it actually means to get a dog. Far too many people aren't, and then the poor animals are neglected and resented. You can't leave them alone for more than four hours. That makes things even like going to the cinema pretty difficult unless you arrange a sitter, and you'll need to pay for daycare or a dog walker every single day if you both work. They need regular walks and attention, non-negotiable, rain or shine. Unless you have friends/family who will care for them when you go away, kennels add a lot to your holiday costs. It's very rewarding if you want one but it's a completely life-changing commitment!

It's very unfair of your DH to talk like that in front of your children too, and make you the baddie. I'd be having strong words with him about that.
