AIBU to not like inanimate objects being called 'she'?

I'm not on a campaign or anything, but this is just something that annoys me and I came to ask if IABU to find it jarring/grating.

I know that historically ships get called 'she' and that already annoyed me.

But now I'm seeing it everywhere. On YouTube someone gets a new belt: 'she's going to look great'.

On Instagram, someone's sewn a dress = 'she fits really well.'

Someone gets a wig: 'she looks really natural'.

It's almost as if 'female = an item to serve/be used/passively be of service'.

Oh, you say, they're just being playful and whimsical, anthropomorphising the object.

But they are never, ever, ever called 'he'. I've never heard it.

AIBU?

Our septic tank was emptied today and the man who am to do it referred to the tank as 'she' several times!

pigsDOfly · 25/10/2023 14:54

Apart from ships/boats and some men referring to their cars I've never heard anyone call inanimate objects he or she.

Everything I own is an it.

When talking about animals and birds, wild and tame, that I see around, unless I know otherwise I tend to refer to them as he/him, which is odd really given that my dog is female. Obviously, I refer to her as she/her.

There weren't many laughs available during Covid, but I did find it amusing that the Institut Francais got in a tangle over whether Covid was masculine - le virus, or feminine - la maladie (disease), being Coronavirus disease.

They decided on La Covid...

People saying "nope I've never heard this" - It's definitely a thing. Just because you haven't heard it doesn't mean it's not very common in certain areas. Quite prevalent on YouTube and IG, I've heard it from a lot of vloggers, fashion channels, beauty community etc. I follow a fashion YouTuber who has names, personalities and voices for all of her belts and accessories. She's absolutely dotty though so I forgive her.

I find it annoying generally and don't know where it came from, but I've never considered it as anything more than an annoyance.

Lol I know who you mean. Delightfully dotty. But yes, they are all doing it. I'm not sure when it started.

What a lot of misogynistic, essentialising bollockology.

Ships, cars, countries etc are all 'it' to me.

It goes back before we had bottle feeding etc, if women didn't nurture the very young, we'd have died out as a species. Misogynistic in more modern times, but not from the time it came from.

INeedAnotherName · 25/10/2023 22:07

I haven't heard of it for clothing, that's just weird. As for cars all of mine have been female, all of DHs have been male. Everything else that's inanimate is "it".

Yeah, it's all like "She's got some great sequins, but some are coming off already, and I ordered a size 10 but she feels more like size 12."

Wtf

I've only ever heard it used for vehicles - boats and cars. I've only ever referred to any car, including my own, as "it".

I know people refer to Henry vacuum cleaners as "he" because of the name, but I've never heard anyone else refer to a household appliance as he or she. Or give it a name.

My robot hoover has a name and is also a he.

LakeTiticaca · 25/10/2023 23:00

Ships have always been referred to as She.
My cars have all been female. Every other inanimate object is known as 'it'
Not something to get worked up about really

Itisyourturntowashthebath · 25/10/2023 23:05

Non gendering stuff is quite unique to the English language.
As we become a country with a more multi linguistic population gendering nouns will become more popular.

Vgbeat · 25/10/2023 23:24

It's a sign of respect and usually means the item should be treated well eg. ship

smilesup · 25/10/2023 23:27

Threads like this remind me why I hate most SM.

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 25/10/2023 23:29

I like it. It makes a change from male being default for everything else. Plus ships are cool.

I call all my houseplants he. No idea why but I have done for ages

All my house plants have names and they are male or female just depending on what I decide when I buy them.

Andrea's Fashion Galaxy by any chance? I love her.

"Come here, Belinda!" 😁

Celia24 · 25/10/2023 23:39

Yeah I didn't like the way Keir Starmer kept calling Israel 'she' when all started kicking off. A very old fashioned usage and yes jarring as a PP said.

That's her, I adore her, absolutely beautifully barmy woman that she is. She's the only one it doesn't annoy me when she calls everything "she"!

Phlewf · 25/10/2023 23:43

Naming inanimate objects drives my mum potty, I think because of a hatred of baby talk (cuggles, sleeps till Christmas, holibobs etc) so now just about everything in my house has a name. Still catches her off guard when I ask dh to turn Christopher off or where cinnamon is parked. I think it’s just suggestive of a connection to the object, sailors loved their ships, i love Christopher (an air fryer) and someone loves their new wig. In my defence, it’s eccentric and part of a long running joke. I don’t think I do outside family though.

Keroppi · 25/10/2023 23:51

it's (mainly american) black woman/gay/ballroom drag community vernacular that has seeped into the mainstream esp younger social media users
"she's givingggg. she's serving." etc

Andrea is nuts but brilliant. While she always looks amazing, I probably wouldn't wear (or suit for that matter) a single outfit that she puts together. Yet she is such a joy to watch. 😀

And yes, her use of she for her clothes items never bothers me. It's a funny quirk, and I believe she's German anyway, so gendering clothes probably makes more sense to her...

Yes, because it's her 'act' iykwim.

The others are doing it unironically.

I lived in Somerset for a few years and everything was called ‘he’!

I was going to say that throughout the south west, things are usually "he".

I think another part of it is that they are not calling everything she. Only the wig/the dress.

While I will forgive Andrea’s Fashion Galaxy anything, I do get tired of the rest of TikTok saying “She’s giving…” when talking about an item of makeup, because it’s just icky. It’s a fucking inanimate object and you’re a native anglophone so it doesn’t have or need a gender attached to it.

But I also have a hatred of this applying things like primer and foundation straight to the face from the pump or tube, which is just unhygienic, along with a few other trending mannerisms I could easily consign to the bin. So no, OP YANBU.

But then plenty of posters have also said they assign things a male gender too - so it’s a non issue.

I bet someone would be moaning
if everything was referred to as male because ‘patriarchy’ or some other nonsense.
