To not know what to do with syd the spider

Syd has been resident in my kitchen for at least 6 months now and she's been very welcome, she's never moved , she doesn't drop on my head , she eats all my undesirables.

But today syd has laid eggs . She has is tending her egg sac like an amazing mummy . But I'm a little freaked at the thought of hundreds of mini syds emerging into my kitchen . She's tending her babies like a queen . She's protective and I haven't the heart to hoover the egg sac up.

Dear Mumsnet, what do I do ?

Very carefully move them to a warm/dry place - shed garage etc. you are lovely for not hoovering them!!

octoberfarm · 25/10/2023 01:06

Ah, I'd leave her be. Syd's been a good friend to you and it's your turn to take care of her. They won't all stick around and even if they did, I bet they'll be just like their very harmless Mum. Plus, all the undesirables are having babies anyway so best to stay ahead of them Grin

The egg sac is well and truly stuck to the wall ......I fear if I try and move it I might hurt her bubs .....

I'm quite attached to little Sydney . I have her sister or brother in my bedroom......again quite welcome.

I'm just wondering where hundreds of baby syds go. . . .?

I can't hurt her or her babies . She's gonna be a good mum I can tell .....she's always right by her egg sac or just a few inches away in her web catching the mozzies.....

She's been a little star . I just didn't expect hosting her kids

Agree, let her be. Not many will survive. We are amid a horrible insect extinction.

My kitchen spider made two egg sacs.

Letsbekindplease · 25/10/2023 01:56

What kind of spider is this? I felt the same about a spider and let her babies freely hatch. They are everywhere. I don’t mind. It’s the one with the big long legs and little ball body.

As someone who is terrified of spiders, please explain what you mean by all undesireables having babies? Praying it's not what I think it is and there's going to be even more spiders soon 😭

She's not a cellar spider , she's just a little species of house spider . I'll post a pic , !

Things the spiders catch.

capabilityfrowns · 25/10/2023 02:05

satonmytuffet

They mean the lava and babies of mosquitoes, clothes moths, the other insects we don't really want in our homes , the spiders eat them!

That's ridiculous. And it won't be cute when they start eating each other - I've seen what happens with a spider infestation.
Obviously, you could look at it from the positive side - the problem will take care of itself quite literally. Or, you could encourage flies by leaving all the food remains in your house rot & fester. They need all help they can get in winter.

Thisbig · 25/10/2023 02:11

I agree with leaving her be, the few babies who survive won't hang about once they hatch.

Mydogmybestfriend · 25/10/2023 02:13

who is Sydney babies dad and where is he? He might be the one in your room rather than her sibling

Exactly how would encouraging flies solve this?

I'd get a spider hoover and once hatched gently remove them and give them their own house in the garage or shed. Or, leave them tell Syd no funny business you'll coexist but you don't want to find her kids running amuck in your house.

It's a long way off and syd 2 has been in my bedroom as long and never moved . I had 2 more and I thought one (Casanova) had mated with her as I watched him one night , he got to her and did a victory lap of the ceiling but no egg sac in the bedroom.

She's a good mummy , always with her bubs .

I have an agreement with spiders:
Don't bother me,
Don’t spawn minions,
I keep the spindilies even when they get to full size because they deal with the nasty big ones (I've seen them take down a huge daddy long legs and big house spiders). That is in the little bit kind of like a square outside my kitchen door, with another door that is the actual back door.
If they're big and hairy inside the house, they made their choice and mine is the hoover.

I don't think syd is into much conversation with humans .

Well, if you want to take care of them, they'll need food.

Having said that, I can get a little snarky when it comes to encouraging spiders at home - that's since dealing with that 200 Syds and counting infestation. So it's probably best to ignore me here! I'm only projecting my suffering on your little spider family 🙃
